The RFL-3HV, based off the RFL-3C, reduces the engine size of the original to mount two HVAC/10s with a total of four tons of ammo.  It shaves half a ton of armor off the rear torso to make the weight.  As with any Rifleman, it is prone to overheating, but despite its slower speed still benefits often enough from the extended range it enjoys over the original to have its place in Inner Sphere armies.

Since I posted that Budget Wasp, I've been trying to figure out how to get the cost under a million C-Bills.  Then I remembered the Liao variant with a Flamer, and it hit me... Sure enough, an ER Flamer is cheaper than a Medium Laser!  Behold a somewhat effective BattleMech for under a million!

Is there a configuration option I'm missing on MML that I can't find primitive anything other than armor to use for Mechs?

Latest version of MML has actual primitive mechs as a separate unit type.  It is in a sub menu that isn't entirely obvious.

I don't recall seeing a HV/10 Urbie yet.  So here we go, using commercial armor and dropping the extra heat sink.

And a very standoff version, using the HVAC/5 and MML 3.  Originally had 2 tons of AC ammo and just LRMs for the MML.  But heck, even one ton of AC ammo is 5 more shots than your standard Urbie, so I went with the MML versatility.

This Battlehamster has always been a gleam in my eye...but difficult to pull off with 3025 tech (having to slow it down to 3/5) until now!!

Originally, this had 3 large lasers on the one arm, so of course I had to swap two of them off for a Blazer.  But what really makes this work now is the addition of coolant pods!  Finally, I had to use commercial armor - hey, five tons is a lot!  So its protection isn't really THAT great, but on the other hand, it's a laser boat (with the significant weakness of having an empty left torso, but medium lasers can always be swapped in there, I suppose).

If I weren't so hung up on having that third large laser, that could be dropped to have standard armor back.

When I get back from the bank I'll post the vehicle and other aerospace design challenges.
Good news is the lab boys say the symptoms of asbestos poisoning show an immediate latency of 44.6 years. So if you're thirty or over you're laughing. Worst case scenario you miss out on a few rounds of canasta, plus you've forwarded the cause of science by three centuries. I punch those numbers into my calculator, it makes a happy face.

The Victor hasn't gotten much love.  So Federated Suns engineers, playing around with ACs like they love to do, found it very simple to swap out the AC/20 for an HVAC/10 - same weight and heat, and double the range, for half the firepower.  This was considered acceptable, as it gave the lightly armored (for an assault class) Mech ability to respond to long-ranged fire.  The machine gun, now superfluous because of the use of ER flamers, was replaced with a coolant pod.

Coming back to this thread and re-reading I noticed that no one had actually made any industrial mech designs. I took it upon myself to fix that. The following designs were produced on Maxwell by newcomers Clerk-James Industries. While the designs are perfectly functional they all have the non-standard parts quirk, because the company essentially started from scratch and didn't take into account old Star League standards. More established companies didn't follow their example when they expanded their own production.

First up, the Logger is a Primitive Industrial intended to be a cheaper alternative to the Crosscut. Without the cargo capacity and lift hoist it's reliant on another vehicle to actually carry the wood back.

Clerk-James second offering is a low end security mech. With short range, low speed and 1.5 tons of Commercial armour you really don't want to take it into anything resembling a real battle. It can handle dispersing crowds with rubber (or not) bullets, but it's mainly relying on the image of "being a mech" to discourage people from making trouble.

Transitioning to something a bit more high end, the Firebreak is a modern grade industrial mech with a fuel cell engine. It's got a mech scale sword for clearing ground/demolishing obstacles that can be dropped if a task requires two hands. It also has a full blown fluid gun with an advanced fire control system to let it actually utilize the long range.

Built in a short production at the Marian Hegemony's direct request, this final variant ditches the environmental sealing in order upgrade to standard grade armour. It also sacrifices the sword for more traditional firepower.

After it became apparent that their inadvertent venture into military supply had been a success Clerk-James looked for a way to build something that could compete with actual battlemechs. When this proved a tall order someone hit upon the idea of designing a dedicated trainer mech, like the Chameleon, that could compete for military contracts without necessarily needing the combat ability of a battlemech. Built with imported 120 rated fusion engines, the Student carries a wide array of different types of weaponry and just enough jump jets for someone to learn to use them. Unfortunately most of the testing was done with the medium laser's power dialed down as they assumed it would be most of the time, resulting in it's cooling systems not really being up to the task.

I think I did something similar to this in a different design challenge, but this one lets me get even closer to true Thunderbolt weaponry in a Centurion!

The only difference in this Centurion's weapon loadout to the standard TDR-5S is the exchange of MML 9 for LRM 15.  Otherwise it has the large laser, three medium lasers, machine guns, and even SRM 2 (improved one-shot, but still), and 15 heat sinks.  Just goes to show you how much weight you have (exactly half the total tonnage) to play with in a 4/6 50-ton Mech.

Cool indeed, but a bit light on armor for a T-Bolt-alike.  I think I would have dropped the OS SRM-2 for more of it...

Well, yes, but if I changed the armor, would it be a Centurion anymore?

I suppose there is precedent, given the max armor on the CN9-AL.  But max armor is no FUN! :P

And I probably could get more heavy Mech weapon layouts shoehorned into this chassis, but the hangup usually is that I won't have the heat sinks to use much of it.  I believe, for example, a MAD-3R's loadout would fit, but would only have 10 heat sinks.  I suppose that's what a coolant pod is for, however.

First off, what happened to posting aerospace and vehicle versions of the thread?

Second, while I'm not normally a stickler for mech variants slavishly adhering to the feel of the original, I can't help but be upset that the only Hatcherman in the thread gives up the hatchet.

Thus, as part of Hanse Davion's ultimately unsuccessful campaign to introduce the AFFS to the joys of not dieing in ammo explosions (and because I had to free up mass for a supercharger and a second coat of paint somehow) I introduce the HCT-3D.

Digging around the TROs, I wanted to make a few "new introtech" versions of some of the 3050 and/or 3055 IS designs, for those that could really be worked out that way.

In this era, the SNK-1E was created as a response to the PXH-1, but needless to say, its lesser mobility and extremely heavy use of ammunition made it less viable as a scout.  It also lacked the Phoenix Hawk's excellent communications system; therefore, the PXH went on to become the premier scouting command Mech.

The SNK-1E isn't a terrible Mech, despite its lack of popularity, sporting an LAC/5 and 3 MML 3s.  Pilots of this Mech were trained to emphasize the use of the autocannon, as it has long ammunition bins as compared to the much less equipped missile launchers.  The four and a half tons of ammo onboard this Mech, however, affected its survivability during the Succession Wars.

After the Clan invasion, the SNK-1V (the original 3055 TRO Mech) would drop the torso-mounted light machine guns for badly needed CASE, and "upgrade" (depending on your viewpoint) the MML 3's to the more space- and ammo-efficient Streak SRM 2s, thereby making ammo explosions much less likely.  Finally, the change to an XL engine saved enough weight for the LBX-10, again showing the emphasis on the autocannon for this Mech as opposed to the missiles.

The Battle Hawk didn't look much different in its prototype days than the Battle Hawk which was realized after the Clan invasion.  The Mech provided good service in line battalions; this also proved its downfall, as many were destroyed when its pilots forgot they were still piloting a light Mech no matter how good its firepower, and most of them were destroyed or parted out by the time the Clans arrived.  Despite its good battle record before the Clans, Defiance still took it on the chin due to sabotage and subterfuge surrounding the Battle Hawk's reputation before its update and re-release, as related in the TRO 3055.

In an effort to get more reach and firepower out of the Goliath as well as deal with some of the 1H's more glaring design flaws, the Federated Suns replaced all the weapons with an HVAC/5 and 4 MML 3s.  To deal with short-range protection issues, an M-Pod was placed on each leg, giving the Goliath a fair punch of self-defense against armored and unarmored foes alike.  A pair of A-Pods were also added for good measure.

While the overall firepower might not be improved, this Goliath is much more capable of defending itself at short range, as much as a quad Mech can do so, at any rate.
