Clan dialect and contractions
« on: 01 April 2011, 17:00:40 »
Posting this here because I think it's the right place, but I wouldn't be too surprised if it's moved

Anyway, something that has been bugging me for a while:

The Clans supposedly hate contractions in speech, as they consider it an indication of a lazy mind. That's up to them, and I'm not going to argue the point. But what I don't understand is the fact that they use certain terms and phrases in every day conversation that are contractions.

Examples include:

Seyla = So Shall It Be
Aff = Affirmative
Neg = Negative
Batchall = Battle Challenge
Quiaff = Query Affirmative
Quineg = Query Negative
Ristar = Rising Star
Sibko = Sibling Company

Have I missed a passage in one of the books that explains this, or is it one of those things we just ignore?
"That's the thing about invading the Capellan Confederation: half a decade later, you want to invade it again"
-Attributed to First-Prince Hanse Davion, 3030
