More ideas for gameplay aids
« on: 08 February 2011, 18:24:16 »
Several months ago I introduced my play group to btech.  My friend had trouble remembering the modifiers.

I whipped up a customizeable excel chart where you select an arbitrary weapon drop down.  I figure 5 or 6 of these tables will fit on one 8 1/2 x 11.

Any suggestions?

I'm not sure how the tables suppose to work.

If they are having difficulties. I suggest using the record sheets with the tables printed on the side for ease in game.

It quite handy and comes with HMP,SSW and I think the Megamek  mech programs.

tired of making lots of cluster rolls in succession, then you need the BOX OF DEATH! brought to you by Arbitration Enterprises.

the Box of death is an unpatented open source solution for having to make as many as 20 cluster hit rolls at once.  simply purchase a 5 dollar storage tray from walmart.  the kind that has seperated sections that can be found either with fishing supplies or with craft supplies.

a 5X4 tray can then be loaded with pairs of dice purchased in bulk from your FLGS.

you can then shake the tray, lay it on the table, and read the results like a book!  I indicate the "first" box with a pair of white dice, all others are multicolored.

It faciliates quickly adding up all modifiers left to right for a given mech.  That way you are not hunting and searching longer than necessary during the fire phase.  Also if you have persistent damage it is quickly evident from the last turn which is written directly above the current table.  I have used this once and it seemed to help for newbies.

I like this idea A LOT! I'll have to try it this weekend.

OK, I'll add something:

Use paperclips to keep track of heat.

Because the heat chart is on the lower right side on any record sheet, a small paperclip will fit nicely and circle the current heat easily. Easy to move up and down, too.

Box of Death:

And Michaels, Joann's or Hobby Lobby usually have the boxes for around $2.

I numbered my boxes, with the large tray at the bottom corner of this box having 4 sets of dice that are distinguishable.

Another thing that works great is if you use solaris skunk works, print the record sheet with the tables and movement grid.  The movement grid is a great tool, it has space to write how far the mech has moved and a place to write notes, but the majority of it is a place to track the sources of your heat to total them up.

I second this.. though it does help to have a cardboard backer for the sheet in the sleeve.
