Shhhh, I'm Hunting a Gwiffin...
« on: 29 January 2011, 12:01:21 »
Are there any 3025-era Griffin models (in a published RS book) equipped with a large laser in lieu of a PPC?

If so, what is the model number and stats?

Yup, the GRF-1S model.  Uses a Large Laser, 2 Medium Lasers, and an LRM 5.

Excellent, thank you.

Why do I now imagine Cray walking away, hunched over and wringing his chest, whilst a slow and malicious laugh builds in his chest?
But as a matter of fact I was quite busy getting potty-trained at the time and had no time for interstellar politics.- ykonoclast

Yes. Standard production model (GRF-1N) whould be able to own it, unless S model gets in physical range where G is handicapped by minimum ranges.

Here is the HMPro file layout Cray in case you needed it.
That said, there is also the 1RG iirc from Battletechnology magazine, its the Steiner Royal Guard versions that sit on either side of the Archons Throne.
They pack a LL IIRC as well as several Mediums & MGs for anti-personal use.
Not that I see a riot in the throne room as likely but I suppose its possible.

Oh Matti.... How much I disagree with you here.
Your talking about probably the finest L1 Medium mech out there, Heck, I favor it over the Wolverine-M in most cases.
The only real chance a 1N has is flat terrain and lucky shots at long range, a 1S will eat it in most games.

I agree with Hellraiser, the GRF-1S will pound a GRF-1N in most cases, especially if it can get close, the 1S is kinda like a jumping Lineholder minus 2 Medium Lasers ( I am not so concerned about the 2 LRM-5).
Saying that because the equipment isn't up-to-the-minute, bleeding-edge tech therefore not a threat is like saying an M2 Browning isn't dangerous to modern infantry because it is 100 years old.

GRF-1S is probably my favorite mech, regardless of era or tech level.  Great combination of range, mobility, armor, and heat management.  Doesn't fit my preferred style of combat at all, but I've always liked the thing... LOL ;D

I'd like it more without the LRM-5, but that is a weapon I have long despised.

I've seen two, maybe three uses of the LRM 5 I actually respect: the Sling, the 3025 Vindicator (you can get a real rack for the 3050 model if you quit faffing around with 15 freaking heat sinks), and to some extent the Grasshopper, although it gets in the way of it being a pure energy brawler.

I liked substituting in LRM 5s for LRM 20s and LRM 15s, satisfying my inner min-maxer. I did some fun things with Archers and LRM 5s.

Back to the thread and my diabolical needs for alternate Griffins...I actually settled on the stock GRF-1N, and it worked well. Had a Solaris VII lance-on-lance battle and the n00b with the GRF-1N (and 4/5 pilot) was second in terms of total damage delivered. The MAD-3D with a 4/5 pilot was first, and it was a toss-up between the PHX-1D (5/5) and Hatchetman (0/0, kid you not) for third-most damage.

The GRF-1N's range worked well on the 1x2 board. The "bad guys" had to advance over open terrain while the MAD-3D drew fire, so the Griffin had slow targets on open ground at medium range for a good chunk of the battle. The player kept it behind cover and stationary and played the marksman. A large laser would've been the suck in that situation.

Oh, if your looking at actually using the Griffin in its FireSupport role, then yes, the 1N is the mech for you.

Me, I tend to view the 55 ton 5-8-5 category as the ultimate brawler size, so I love the 1S model.

If I want fire support I use Crusaders, Archers, & Catapults......or Whitworths,   or even tiny Valkyries.

That or I go 3050 and use 3M models that pack the ERPPC, the LRM20, and the DHS to fire them both.

I hadn't planned on the n00b using the Griffin in the fire support role. He did, and it worked out well. I'd been anticipating closer quarters brawling, hence an interest in lasers.

I did not say that at all.
I said I don't use my Griffins in a FireSupport role and prefer the 1S model as a brawler.

I DO use Valkyries as Light Fire Support just like the FedSuns does.
Not every battle involves Heavy mechs, Delta Company Davion Light Guard showed us that massed Valkyrie fire can down enemy mechs just fine  ;)
Against a nice Kurita Light Lance of 3 Panthers & a Jenner I find that a Davion force of Enforcer & Javelin moving up supported by 2 Valkyries to be a solid game.

Either works  ;)
The Fire Javelin is great in L1 play against mechs, similar to what I described above.
But I find the alternate ammo options of L2 play or god forbid, tacops is a reason to use the standard model as well.  Or anytime I have to take down tanks/infantry......smores anyone?
