What gets resculpted
« on: 17 August 2017, 10:20:20 »
Is this randomly chosen or are there any polls where people can ask for resculpts? By the way will we see resculpts for older mechs like the Awesome or the Javeline?

Unless you're talking about Fan Financing, I believe it is a purely internal IWM decision. I highly doubt it's made at random.

The latest resculpts (the Cougar and Uziel) were at the request of Catalyst directly.

Fan Finance resculpts are at the whim and fancy of either the fans, or the sculptor (assuming the fans are a fan of the sculpt).

Some of the other resculpts (Centurion, Chimera) were sculptor projects (well, my projects) that were pitched to and accepted by IWM.  Due to changes in policy, you'll probably see those only as fan finance in the future.

Those were resculpted once already, a while back. What I think you should ask is if they are getting updated art that would justify a new sculpt. The new boxed set is supposed to contain a new Awesome sculpt, I believe with updated artwork.

The latest resculpts (the Cougar and Uziel) were at the request of Catalyst directly caused by the collective will and dreams of a thousand gamers finally made manifest.

You had a minor misspelling, figured I'd take care of that for you. As always, I've got your back.  ;)

Since the Catapult, Awesome, and Commando are getting new art and sculpts I would hope that between now and the next set of cons in 2018 more of the old dated 3025 units will get new updated art/sculpts as well.

According to what I saw in the Gencon thread I also hope for more 3025 resculpts ^-^

If at all, they'll probably be done on a need-to basis. That will require products that prominently features those designs. There's probably an iconic-ness ranking you could apply to the old units that would anticipate the likelihood of a makeover (i.e. don't hold your breath for the Hornet to get the cover-girl treatment)

You bought the box set and are ready to expand your bt experience. Now what? | Modern Sourcebook Index | FASA Sourcebook Index | Print on Demand Index

For the most part, variants will full art are prioritized over straight resculpts.  Hence the Zeus X4 or the new Marauder variants (or even the older Warhammer 8k).

So, for example (just an example, this is not in the works or anything) I'd expect to see a primitive Dervish long before we see a Dervish resculpt.

Wait- does this mean there's a chance of the Crusader with the plasma rifles?

Because I don't have kids, but I'll go knock up the better half just so I have a firstborn to give away to make that happen.  >:D

I suggested that a couple years back, but it got bumped from the schedule and hasn't resurfaced. Get rid of the tiny waist/ gigantic forearms combination for something more balanced, and overall offer a completely different feel for the Crusader. It's not impossible, but again, I haven't heard anything to suggest it's likely either.

I actually really like the Crusader, it just reeeeeeally needs someone to re-do the fists so they're less fiddly, and could do (like 99% of 'Mechs) with not being stuck on a base to start.

If you or a small group were able to put up the funds, I imagine there wouldn't be too much resistance to having it done through FF. The trouble comes when too many people want different things and there isn't enough support behind any one project to make it happen.

The thick forearms are honestly part of why I like the Phoenix Crusader so much.  The hands are just bad.

Well, sure, but since we're talking about the PP Crusader, the MRMs are where they're supposed to be. With art for the -8L in TRO3085, its MMLs would still be located in the forearms on a new sculpt.

Cool possibility. If anyone gets this Crusader rolling, count me in to help with funds.

Now you just need someone to take the lead, figure out how much interested individuals are willing to contribute, and talk to Speck to see if you can get something hammered out. You know, the usual hurdles.  :)

Assume everything needs to be sculpted, and scale down from there if need be.  IWM usually charges $800.

Also, assume Psycho would be doing this sculpt because it would be amazing if Psycho took the turd that was the current Phoenix crusader and made it into a gem, like he always does.

For those interested, please see his other amazing mod work with the Rifleman X3, Mad Cat Mk II 4/5, the new Marauder Variants, the battle damaged Mortis, the Warhammer 8K and a whole slew of others...

JagerMech III:

1) Get plastic Jagermech
2) Remove legs & arms
3) Order JagerMech III legs and arms from IWM
4) Apply to JagerMech torso
5) Rejoice in the absence of abomination.

Yeoman:
1) Slice legs off Yeoman mini
2) Get waist piece from any of a number of MW:DA 'Mech minis
3) Apply legs to waist
4) Mount torso on waist
5) Do the twist!

Funding issues aside, The Yeoman sculpt is limited by the requirement that it remain faithful to the published art. The existing sculpt isn't all that far off from the picture, as far as I can tell.

I have my doubts that is as stringent a requirement as it used to be. The new Highlander doesn't match one specific piece of art. It takes from several sources and has unique features as well. It's a beautiful mini that obviously got the go-ahead to deviate.

If that is so (and your point about the highlander is a good one), something like the fan picture posted above would certainly be an improvement on the Yeoman, while keeping the essentials of the design.

Fan art very specifically does NOT qualify, unfortunately.

The Highlander was derived by blending together many different pieces of art from what I understand(as was the Flashman), but all of the art in question had to have showed up in canon sources.

3rd party mods would fall under 'non-canon', so yeah.

That said, I know Worktroll custom-built that version a few years ago, I'm sure he'd happily tell you how he went about it.

Personally, I'd say the Highlander was inspired by many sources but is definitely an entirely new work of art. (Same as I would say for most canon artwork of established chassis from one artist to the next.) I immediately recognize it as a Highlander but the details are slightly different. The forward-swept armor of the cockpit is most notable to me, but the LRM launcher arrangement and left arm weapons stand out as well. Also, I don't recall a canon depiction of the -734 or -738, yet we have those variants sculpted. I can't claim to have every piece of Highlander art to reference, but I do have a lot.

I don't state this to be argumentative, I do so to highlight that there is a way for CGL and IWM to get things done if projected earnings make it worth doing.  I was on the QCC for several years and we were bound by canon artwork, period. I would dig out as many sourcebook images of the units as I could find in order to give the sculptor as much flexibility as possible, but it was still very limiting. The current QCC is very good (IMO) and constraints appear to have loosened somewhat, which is a good thing. There has been one artist that I can recall (IAMCLANWOLF) willing to make isometric artwork for traditional sculptors to reference, and this new artwork apparently is approved by TPTB at CGL. Converting a 2D image to a 3D sculpt has always been tricky and if TPTB are willing to be a little flexible with the art in order to get an even better 3D product, we're all that much better off.

Comparing the Yeoman (art or mini) to the Highlander (art or mini), and expecting them to be thought of as "Equally Popular/Loved" by the players is like comparing the Pacer to the '63 split-window Corvette.   :D  (Or whatever year the split-window appeared.)

Face it folks. The Yeoman is Fugly, in art AND mini, and just isn't that popular, compared to the Highlander.

You got the year right. I wish I had bought the one that was offered to me 30 years ago. the guy only wanted $13k for a beautiful example of the car.

That said, I know Worktroll custom-built that version a few years ago, I'm sure he'd happily tell you how he went about it.

I always thought the Highlander was a curious choice for a resculpt. I mean, the new one is great, but there are many other mechs in more dire need of attention. Hopefully over time the rest of the TRO3039 stable gets a look over.

Everything except some of the old TRO2750 designs have been resculpted at least once.

You'll have to be more specific on the Catapult. There are more than a few sculpts out there.

20-930 I believe. It seems to be one of the more extensive resculpts, It doesn't have much in common with the old skinny legs version :P
