Account got deleted
« on: 30 April 2013, 07:56:19 »
Hi

A lurker and avid reader here. Today I had to recreate my account. It took a while to figure out that this was the problem, but making the account was easy. Given that I have never posted anything, it is a bit surprising that the system would think that I was a spammer. I thought the whole purpose of spamming was to post things.

However, aside from losing information about which threads I have read, and which have updates, nothing of value was lost.

Thanks Catalyst for hosting this forum and providing a home for a great deal of awesome content

That seems unlikely, but sometimes odd things happen. What was the screen name? We can at least take a look and see what happened. Was this recent? We all lost our accounts and had to recreate them a couple of years ago due to a forum crash, so if you haven't been here in a while that might have been the cause.

My Screen name was Blekinge, same as this account.
This happened today, or yesterday (I noticed it today)

I read the forum daily from my phone. I have only been registered a month or so.

Heya,

Sorry for the inconvenience of having to create a new account, I do apologize.

We've got some extensive anti-spam measures. With cause: we've blocked more than 1.4 million spam accounts so far automatically, and almost 200k more manually.
My presumption is that your old account was wiped in a manual purge. It's where I manually delete accounts that are flagged as a spam account due to either the email address or IP used during creation. I do those 500 at a time, usually when there's about 3000 or so flagged. I also sweep the existing user database to see if anything slipped by.
My guess is that the IP you used to register was subsequently used by a spammer. That happens. Right now your account credentials aren't being red-flagged by the spam filter, so a future deletion seems unlikely.

Should it happen again (and I really hope it won't), please feel free to contact me directly in case there's trouble signing in again. Now that you've posted, it should be less likely that you'll get caught in another sweep.

Paul
The solution is just ignore Paul.

Thank you for the explanation

Mistakes happen. Nothing valuable was lost. And now that I have actually posted here, I might try to engage in some of the debates, instead of just lurking.
