I don't think you need some neferious reason to oppose a national unification with another power. Lot's of people simply like their nation and don't want to see it absorbed into something. And many of those people can't be bought with trinkets and money. Even if this other power is a strong firm ally. A national identity is a powerful thing. Ask a Brit if they'd support merging with the french.

LAC/5 is rather short ranged in 3060 if you don’t have something else to cover longer ranges.

If I wanted to do the simplest possible refit to my Sorpions I'd just swap the AC/5 for a LAC/5 and a LRM5 (one ton ammo each).

I honestly think for a defensive unit wheeled might be superior motive type and an LAC/5 is enough in urban terrain too.

I'm not sure the reduced range is wise on a defensive Scorpion and think it's actually better as a heavier unit, boost it 5 tons, add more armor. The front MG does provide crit protection but vehicle grenade launchers on the sides loaded with smoke do the same without ammo explosions.
