(Answered) Patchwork Armor Calculations Question
« on: 18 December 2019, 19:02:56 »
Coming from this thread - https://bg.battletech.com/forums/index.php?topic=67809.0

Assuming a 65 ton mech here is the difference.

Currently Megameklab is using the version proposed in the 3145 errata thread.

The 2008 TO Printing has Patchwork listed as:
The designer of a unit must designate the armor type to be used in each hit location and—using the Fractional Armor Table described earlier—compute the weight of the armor by multiplying its weight (in tons per point) by the number of points assigned to the location, rounding the final result up to the nearest half-ton.

The Corrected 2nd Printing
The designer of a unit must designate the armor type to be used in each hit location and, using the Fractional Armor Table on page 376, compute the weight of the armor by multiplying its weight (in tons per point) by the number of points assigned to the location, rounding the final result up to the nearest half-ton. This is done per location, with excess points per location discarded.

2018 Edition - Full Manual with new cover
The designer of a unit must designate the armor type to be used in each hit location and—using the Fractional Armor Table described earlier—compute the weight of the armor by multiplying its weight (in tons per point) by the number of points assigned to the location, rounding the final result up to the nearest half-ton.

Various Errata
3 January, 2013.
* Patchwork Armor (p. 377)
Second paragraph, second sentence
“The designer of a unit must designate the armor type to be used in each hit location and—using the Fractional Armor Table described earlier—compute the weight of the armor by multiplying its weight (in tons per point) by the number of points assigned to the location, rounding the final result up to the nearest half-ton.”

Change to:

“The designer of a unit must designate the armor type to be used in each hit location and, using the Fractional Armor Table on page 376, compute the weight of the armor by multiplying its weight (in tons per point) by the number of points assigned to the location, rounding the final result up to the nearest half-ton. This is done per location, with excess points per location discarded.”

* Patchwork Armor (p. 377)
At the end of the third paragraph insert the following sentence:
"A unit may also not mount armor types illegal for that unit type to mount."

* Patchwork Armor (p. 377)
1) Second paragraph, second sentence
“The designer of a unit must designate the armor type to be used in each hit location and—using the Fractional Armor Table described earlier—compute the weight of the armor by multiplying its weight (in tons per point) by the number of points assigned to the location, rounding the final result up to the nearest half-ton.”

2) At the end of the third paragraph insert the following:
“A unit may also not mount armor types illegal for that unit type to mount.”

③ Patchwork Armor (p. 377)
Third release only. Second paragraph: delete the third sentence (“This is done per location, with excess points per location discarded.”)

Patchwork Armor (p. 377)
1) ③ Third release only. Second paragraph: delete the third sentence (“This is done per location, with excess points per location discarded.”)
2) ① At the end of the third paragraph insert the following:
A unit may also not mount armor types illegal for that unit type to mount.

Patchwork Armor (p. 377)
1) ③ Second paragraph: delete the third sentence (“This is done per location, with excess points per location discarded.”)
2) ① At the end of the third paragraph insert the following:
A unit may also not mount armor types illegal for that unit type to mount.

Patchwork Armor (p. 377)
At the end of the third paragraph insert the following:
A unit may also not mount armor types illegal for that unit type to mount.

Last reference that seems complicates things is this one (emphasis mine)
So, this is not how it's done, though reading TO it still appears to be written ambiguously. I had this discussion with some CGL folks a while back though I can't find the thread (maybe it was in the TO errata thread but is gone because Errata was published since then). The way patchwork is suppose to work is you add up all the points of a given armor type on the unit, and then calculate the weight. This is supported by the various designs out there that use patchwork armor. In TO, there was once a sentence that read "This is done per location, with excess points per location discarded." It was removed because the weight calculation is not done by location. I can see where it's still ambiguous because it still says "...the number of points assigned to the location..."

It really should be raised in the TO errata thread again.

Which seems to have a different method.

The question becomes what is the correct way to calculate Patchwork armor.

Dev Note.

This answer provided by jymset

I can confirm that 2018 reverting to the initial rule was deliberate and not a copy-paste error or some such.

2018 printing is correct, with just the Dec 6 2019 addendum needed.
