Why no clan box sets?
« on: 18 July 2011, 11:05:02 »
I see the battleforce one, but I would like a normal scale star boxset.

Say, 3 Madcats and 2 Vultures?

I would also like a light star and medium star boxset.

Why is it IS only?

Well...

There was a Ghost Bear Star set a few years ago, which you can still get from IWM at conventions (I saw a couple at their booth at Historicon)- it consisted of a Grizzly, Clint IIC, Dragonfly A, Black Hawk Prime, and Ursus, along with a Ghost Bear logo medallion.

If I remember my history lessons right, they didn't sell particularly well, and so the packs were discontinued. The exceptions were the unique version sets done for the Starterbooks, but that book line didn't do well either- no idea if any others are planned, but this last one was PDF only. Where that leaves future lance/star packs is anyone's guess.

If you want one of the Ghost Bear sets, meanwhile, contact Iron Wind Metals and they might be able to work something out with you.

Also, Umpteen years ago, they had the Clan Light, Medium, Heavy and Assault box sets. Those pop up on eBay every now and then. I've got one of each (2 of the Heavy) of the first-run sets, before they started making some of them out of resin, and putting them in the boxes. Well, parts of them were resin, I believe, not the entire 'Mech. I don't know for sure, as I never bought any - I had the originals, why bother? I always thought it odd though, that they only had 4 minis in a box, when the Clans operated in groups of 5. Another way to keep the cost down, and more in line with the Inner Sphere box sets, I guess. ???

I thought they also used to have a "Build Your Own Star" thing on the website? Have they discontinued that now?

We are currently exploring some clan mech packs for sale on the website.  More to come in the next few weeks.

I would love to see some of the rarer 3050 omnis.

A Grendel, Mad Cat, Nobori-Nin, Ryoken, and Puma, perhaps?

Midweight Striker Star.  Yum.

(Yes, I know the chances of that combination actually being printed is somewhere between slim and none)

Yea, it really is that fast....

A Clan mech pack could be fun, but with all the different eras it might be hard to do. Other than the 3050 omnis it can be hard to find a universally used set.

I would prefer a volume discount ala the other boxsets. $13 X 5 = $65

$60 sounds alot better

Looking at the assault box, and rounding up:

Atlas $13
Cyclops $13
Hunchback $11
$10

Saving about $5

Every little bit helps.

Then do a little searching online. It's fairly easy to manage a 10% or even a 20-25% discount off the MSRP through various online retailers. If all you're looking to do is save a little money, you can do that without IWM having to spend any time organizing a package that doesn't offer anything new.

I strongly support the early '90s concept of Light, Medium, Heavy, and Assault packs for the Clans, although it never made sense to me that they came in fours instead of a full Star of five OmniMechs.  I did purchase a couple of packs in the early '90s from Ral Partha and merely added a fifth OmniMech to make a full Star...  So yes, now that they have officially re-sculpted the basic Clan Invasion OmniMechs, they should have packs of them available for sale.

The reason the old Clan Box Sets were divided up into packs of four was because they were based off the tonnage- Lights, Mediums, Heavys, & Assaults, and there were 4 of each in 3050.

It would be cool to see packs with four 3050 OmniMechs plus a point of the new Elementals.  Extra points if we get some alternate configurations too, like the Black Hawk Prime and the Dragonfly A that were in the old Ghost Bear star pack.

Well, the alternate configs are easily done just by picking up the right parts from the website. I've got a decent group at this point myself of oddjob variants.  ;)

Not all of them.  The Black Hawk Prime parts aren't available with the normal Omni parts.  It was exclusive to the Star Pack.  I would love to see Star Packs with more exclusives like that.  I've got almost enough of the standard Omnis and the other configurations I want that are available, but exclusives would be great and would get me interested in packs that otherwise consist of minis I already have.

Isn't the Black Hawk prime the base mini? BT-014 and AR20-610.

The old archived version's arms are available in the Scrapyard.

That's the old sculpt.  I investigated this a bit a month or two ago when I wanted a Black Hawk Prime - apparently the old sculpt arms don't match the resculpt well.  The resculpt Black Hawk is the in the H configuration, though Prime arms were made for the resculpt - which were sold in the Ghost Bear Star Pack.  The same as the Infernus configurations of the WoB Celestials were only available in lance packs.

There's a thread in the chatterweb about a clan expansion box set from Catalyst that is in the works.
http://www.classicbattletech.com/forums/index.php/topic,4344.0.html
The second post links to yet another thread where Herb acknowledges it is planned.

Goes on to state there will be 15 of the original 3050 omni's (the Fire Moth is omitted) and a star of elementals.  Looks like some speculation and some fact mixed together on the unit mix though.
