Heavy Gear was spiritually influenced by Votoms.  Which believe if memory serves me right, does use hand held weapons as well. Their Mechs (They called Scopedogs) are very customization too. When i watched the series i thought it was neat method of making realmecha genres show.  Not super tough Gundam, but light cavalry machine.

Mecha in Armored Trooper VOTOMS are called Armored Trooper (equivalent for BattleMech). Scapedog is a type of Armored Trooper (equivalent for Shadow Hawk). Besides Scapedog, there are other kinds of Armored Troopers. I haven't memorized what those are called.

[edit]
Actually, closest equivalent for Armored Troopers would be (Heavy) Gear. In BattleTech case, ProtoMech without Enhanced Imaging thing.

There was US release of Votoms box set for entire series (old one, not the anniversary new OVAs) couple years back.
My wife got me really nice boxed one that came in a tin "ammo case", i've not poked around seeing it's still available since DVDs are on decline these days.
had been scouring for that one for ages...

Votoms is one of those series that I need to see at some point.

Having watched all of the original TV series, It's pretty great. Not Gundam great, & the ending is pretty bizarre, but it's at least a fun ride in a rather interesting setting. On the basis of mecha designs alone, it's probably the most realistic mecha anime around.

The Main Character, on the other hand...
If you ever want to see how a character with a maximum luck stat would look in action, just observe Chirico Cuvie.

Bizarre? To me it looks like just meshing together endings of 2001: A Space Odyssey (movie) and Flashback (video game). I don't spoil it further than this (maybe too much already)

If something can be legitimately compared to 2001's ending, then being bizarre is kind of a given. :)

"Perfect Soldier" they said!

I really did enjoy the couple of episodes where he was flipping out on an abandoned spaceship being haunted by a marchig band. That was wild.

Wasn't that one the series writer working out his own issues through the narrative?

Once I learned that the show's creator had a mental breakdown near the end of the show, looking at him as Shinji Ikari, it made a lot of sense in that light.

If there was something else going on, or something I missed, please enlighten me.

There's also Perfect Blue, based on the novel.

The end of the first run of Berserk was also on that level.

Well, the writer was working on depression issues as he was developing the dtory.  But the tv ending was die to the animation budget running out.

So binge watched Fullmetal Alchemist (2003) as well as the live action movie. Enjoyed both, though the movie changes the plot a bit in some places. Especially the end. Just started Brotherhood, not sure how long it will take to watch another 50ish episodes #P

Wonder if I should do the dubbed version this time rather than subbed...

Why not do both? I've found that Dubbed can detract from some moments of beautiful animation.

Kinda like that Star Fox Adventures boss where you had to focus on the marker and had to completely ignore the awesome scene going down on the screen. Need to find a Video Walkthrough of that on Youtube so I could watch the final result in all its glory.

I've done both for a lot of different series between CR and Funi, but watching FMA subbed and dubbed? FMA is 51 episodes and Brotherhood is more than than. In this case its one or the other... watched the 2003 series subbed so Brotherhood is going dubbed. Translation won't be exact, but at least this time I can focus on watching the show instead of reading it lol. Not sure how far along I will get before the kids come back from their mothers though.

Many main characters are like that.
Not to Cuvie's level. It's actually an informed, In Universe character trait. The universe conspires to keep him alive, and while it usually does so through subtle nudges, it can display in rather over the top, ridiculous ways because sometimes subtle just wont work. He's survived re-entry, while unconcious, because his Scopedog happened to be on a slab of armor that was at just the right angle. He's had more mecha shot out from under him than anyone else I can think of, and usually walks away with barely a scratch as the explosion throws him and he lands just the right way. Someone once pointed a gun at him, point blank, to execute him. The gun jammed, then accidentally fired when it was not pointed at Chirico's head with the bullet then ricocheting multiple times to kill that guy who was trying to shoot him.

GODLY luck.

It is, by the Japanese manufacturer's own labeling, Scopedog:

Yep, that's what my Sunrise/Xebec Toys Red Shoulder model Scopedog action figure (box) also says...  :)

The Scopedog is the name of the DirtSide (?) walker miniatures that look a lot like Votoms.

Franxx's seventh episode isn't action pack, but it certainly a character building episode.  Yeah, beach episode, but they end up doing more developing the character which is kinda refreshing.

Don't forget the books on childbirth and kissing [blank]

I would have liked to have had the kids explore more in the old world buildings with perhaps a hint as to the reason for abandoning the cities. In either case the old world ruins don't look too old so whatever happened but have been within 100 years at most, especially considering the shape the books were in.

I would think the reason is that the show runners took some liberties with the world.

That manga shop the two girls were just outside of look like it was good shape.  Like everyone ran for it.

The beach seem out place where world was desert planet.  This is long series, so maybe more can be fleshed out.
Zero Two's mentality still alludes me what she wants.

Yeah its nice it will get 24 episodes. Give a fair bit of time for more of the world building to happen as well as the overall story. I wonder if there is a possibility of a second season if this one does well.

I remain neutral on the art so far from what I've seen. Mentally I've blanked out that it won't look the same (perhaps as awesome to myself).
