Typhon Class destroyer (Yes, Typhon, not Typhoon!)
« on: 09 April 2018, 16:25:00 »
Length - 682 meters
Displacement - 620,000 tons
Crew complement - 329

Designed to replace the rapidly aging Essex II and Lola III classes the Typhon outgunned and out performed the older vessels by a huge margin.  Fast, well armed and flexible thanks to its 20 fights and 2 DropShip docking collars the Typhon was also heavily armoured and far more suited to the individual actions that Clan WarShips found themselves embroiled in.  But due to the resources used in constructing the new ship, it was simply uneconomical to replace the older ships, most Clans simply didn't bother replacing their older vessels and instead subjected them to a series of upgrades and modernizations to match the modern combat environment.

I love seeing the art that Matt Plog does for both Mechs and Warships.  I'm really hoping to see his take on the Avalon Cruisers and Mjolnir Battlecruisers.  Maybe we'll see those in the next update to TRO 3061 Fan Product.  ;)

Both the Mjolnir and Avalon don't need work, the only thing with the Avalon is the need of a picture that isn't of its engines :p

The Mjolnir is better art-wise than the Avalon; we at least see some weapon ports there. However, the Avalon needs some love just to give it better definition, much like was done by Matt Plog for the Kyushu, Kirishima, etc.  My comment was not that they need a redesign but rather an update that matches them with his art style since he has already applied it to the ships already featured in the TRO 3061 fanbook. Otherwise they would look out of place in comparison should they get entries in a new iteration of the fanbook.

Well these ships along with a number of tanks and other bits of kit are going to go into another book i'm working on, not a suppliment to Delranes, but a side product. :)

The only thing I can’t figure (and this is no complaint on this gorgeous little ship but a puzzle about most warships) is how do Aerodynes mount the collars? Spheroids I can see no problem, but I’m not sure how, say, a Leopard hooks up.

With their rear into the collar, I guess.

Typhon Class Destroyer

Length – 682 Meters
Displacement – 620,000 tons
Crew complement – 329 including 25 Marines or Elementals.

The surviving destroyer type WarShips in Clan service were a mixture of the Lola III and Essex II which had departed with the SLDF during Operation EXODUS and were the survivors of the battles to retake the Hegemony and Sol System.  Designed along standard SLDF lines, the ships were built to be cheap, easy to maintain and, in essence, expendable.  As they could be easily replaced by the vast industrial strength of the Hegemony.  But, the Clans lacked the industrial capabilities of the Hegemony and WarShips were not assets that could simply be thrown away without care.  With this in mind, as part of the New WarShip Programme, the Scientists of Clan Snow Raven began development of a destroyer scale vessel that would incorporate all the lessons learned from the SLDF of the past and take advantage of the latest developments in technology.
Going through several iterations the final design called for a 620,000-ton vessel, putting her in the same weight as the older Essex II class, and considerably lighter than the 680,000 tons of the Lola III.  Indeed, the design did feature some of the Essex’s hull features and the forwards hull was very reminiscent of the older vessel. But superficial similarities aside the new design was an entirely different ship.  The bridge and sensor section were moved amidships with the ships CinC buried deeply in the hull, the traditional bridge section now more used as a meeting space and briefing room.  Over eight hundred and sixty tons of Lamellor Ferro-Carbide armour was used to give the ship protection equal to a Black Lion II class Battlecruiser.

Like the older Lola and Essex classes the new destroyer, officially called the Typhon class by the Raven’s newest Khan, Lynn McKenna carried the standard two Stars of OmniFighters (20 fighters) as well as a quartet of small craft.  But she also could carry a pair of DropShips to either deploy ground forces or support troops on the ground with additional Aerospace assets or the newly developed Roc class Assault DropShip.

The armament of the Typhon was designed for maximum flexibility, a pair of heavy naval autocannons in the bow provide the main forwards firepower whilst a mixture of 35 and 45cm naval lasers supported by medium Naval particle cannons provide the majority of the firepower.  A pair of medium naval gauss rifles can also engage broadside targets.

Additional firepower is provided by ten AR-10 Maelstrom missile launchers with six firing into the forward and broadside arcs and four covering the stern quarters.  Anti-fighter defences include the ships lasers and particle cannons as well as the missiles for long to extreme range engagements but at short range a mixture of large pulse lasers, ER PPC and LRM clusters can engage fighters or hostile DropShips whilst also providing cover for friendly craft.  Finally, anti-missile batteries are installed for point and area defence against anti-ship and fighter scale missiles.

You know..that's actually one of the things I said to Plog when trying to describe the idea for the ship.

She's got bow section that was inspired by the Essex II but has a seriously re-worked section aft of the amidships bridge.

The initial batch of 5 are built for the Ravens and serve together as a Star but another six will also be constructed for or buy Clans Star Adder, Wolf and Falcon.  Basically the discovery that there's no WarShips in the Inner Sphere cuts off the new building spree and strangles it in the crib, it goes on in fits and spurts with the most successful ship of the new generation being the Fredassa and the  slightly different Fredassa II.

I’d have said they’d dock by the top or bottom considering aerodyne fly top forward when not in combat

Plogg again does absolutely gorgeous work, I love the way this warship looks.  It definitely looks much more aggressive than the typical warship.

Love it bud. Both of the new ships might make an appearance in the Hegemony. So it can help me get away from SLDF and AFFS designs.

Came for a revamped Cappie Black Lion Block I. Neat, but leaving a sad panda.

I like the look of the Black Lion I's, only thing i'd have added would be some gun turrets being visual, but I like their big towering galleon like profile.
