Posts vs. Activity?

Can anyone explain the relationship (if there is one) between number of posts in a sub-forum and "activity"?  Mine are all kinds of mixed up, and I don't understand... :/

The user activity graph appears to be anchored to a time zone somewhere in the pacific.
