Back on the helo issue, tiltrotors win in one big way: range.  Small nations don't need that.

Fan Designs and Rules / Re: Mapping A DropShip
« Last post by mechasaurus on Today at 18:32:03 »

It should pass through the collar. After that, the appearance is undefined...
But whether the KF boom is like a mini-core running through the center of the DropShip or a sensor network distributed through the ship to map mass for the KF drive' controller isn't yet defined.

That's a cool answer - so far, undefined!  You could even say both, or more, depending on the manufacturer/model/etc.  Like real world ships, you could even have different build batches (flights for US ships), over the centuries.  Older, clunkier ones have a core running up the spine, while newer ones have it woven into the hull, vs others where it's a small 6' boom in one room.  Any fan design would be fine!  You just say something like, "oh yeah, this model was built in 2752 and has had poor maintenance over the centuries and isn't like your 2830 Union-C at all!"

I've going to keep a central pillar, but vastly reduce the diameter.  It'll probably be 1 m diameter, with only the innermost few cm being a solid core/thread, with weaving/cooling around and a thin outer jacket at the 1 m mark.  I'll also keep the supports and elevators running up the middle.

Also, I'm told the current interpretation is that the 150 ton cost for a mech bay means 50 tons of equipment and the 100 ton mech.  Does this mean, as we decided upthread, that a lightly loaded Union (crew and fuel only) could take off at 2126 tons, rather than the full-up 3600?  I'm cool with it, I'm just wondering, was that the original intent?

General BattleTech Discussion / Re: Generic Assault Rifle Picture

Trying to figure out your timelines here. The original Mobile Suit Gundam started airing in April 1979 and SuperDimensional Fortress Macross in October 1982.

The mobile suits of Gundam were inspired (to my understanding) by the power armor from the Starship Troopers novel, which was first published as a novel in November 1959.

do you remember how long it takes to make that stuff?  aired in the late 70s/early 80s means they probably started the research in the mid 70s to get it right, and to get it to a point the studio would say 'go ahead' you're likely looking at a start date around 1971.

Arguably, the LT in charge of the platoon is the only one radioing back spotting information.  Private Snuffy definitely doesn't have the stripes to make that call, and a squad leader (corporal or sergeant, depending on organization) is probably not either due to officer/NCO differences in responsibilities.

Yah, but nobody in their right mind positions an entire platoon INSIDE the known blast radius of a 105...yet Battletech armies do, routinely.
