(Answered) Chameleon LPS and infantry ranges
« on: 28 February 2013, 18:38:57 »
Pg. 300 of TacOps for the effects of Chameleon LPS: "Medium-range attacks receive an additional +1 to-hit modifier, and Long- or Extreme-range attacks receive an additional +2 to-hit modifier. Unlike most other stealth systems, these modifiers apply even if the attacking unit is infantry." (emphasis mine)

However, as pg. 149 of the TechManual shows, infantry units don't have range brackets that correspond to "medium", "long", and "extreme." So how do we calculate the correct penalty for an infantry unit firing on a mech?

TW p. 214:
"Conventional infantry Attacks
While conventional infantry use the same range modifiers
as ’Mechs and vehicles, unlike those units, infantry can attack
another unit in the same hex. The Conventional Infantry Range
Modifier Table (see p. 215) shows the to-hit modifiers for each
platoon type at 0 range; for convenience, the table also lists the
range to-hit modifiers for every generic platoon type, out to their
maximum range in hexes."

AFTER THIS ADD:

"Whenever rules mention a range bracket (such as Medium range), such brackets exist for infantry in hexes in which their to-hit modifier matches the modifier for that range. For example, a SRM platoon has a Medium range of 3-4."

I trust this solves things?

That makes sense, except there are other modifiers besides +0, +2, and +4. If you look at the Conventional infantry Range Modifier table on pg. 149 of the TechManual, you will see that there are mods of +0, +1, +2, +3, +4, +5, and +6. So assuming that anything beyond +4 is long, you still need to decide what to do with +1 and +3. Basically do they "round up" to Medium and Long respectively, or "down" to Short and Medium, respectively.

For example, a SRM platoon has a Medium range of 3-4. If their to-hit modifier falls in-between the modifier for a range bracket, consider it part of the furthest of the two. IE, a Modifier of +5 should be consider to be Extreme Range, p. 85, TO."
