Statting the "Viper"
« on: 07 May 2018, 16:00:38 »
So, as part of this thread, it became apparent there was that one 'Mech was omitted from original Battletech, called the Viper. It was used for the outline of damage diagram in the record sheet in the early editions though.
I'll add the pic as attachment.

I started wondering, what kind of stats it could have?

Here's what i came up with:

Weight i chose pretty arbitrarily at 60 tons. It doesn't look lighter but neither does it look like an assault 'Mech. Since it is very reminiscent of the Crusader, i decided it would be lighter, hell, this would make for a good backstory, as being a predecessor to the Crusader (hence intro date). I think it could've been used during the Reunification War but issues with the 'Mech led to creation of the Crusader as an improved version.
Because the original 14 don't include a jump-capable heavy outside variants, i gave this 4/6/4 mobility, with jump jets split between torsos and legs.
Armament looks like being concentrated to arms, though the torso has points that could be lasers. So, each arm has a SRM-6 with ton of ammo in the adjacent torso, along with a flamer. Each side torso has a medium laser, and the center torso has two small lasers.
For cooling, i decided to go nuts due to its rather lackluster armament, so 8 extra heat sinks. This required sacrificing a bit of armor, but 11.5 tons is really solid for this weight class. I put good amount of armor to arms and legs as they look well armored.

I'm unsure what to make of the side torso "Squares",  There really isn't anything in L1 tech that calls out to be used there.

I guess check the remaining tonnage after paying for the LRMs but I think you'd be fine with leaving those as just stylized armor ports or HS vents.

4 ML isn't bad at all, matches the Catapult but with a better heat curve & armor I think.

I figure that perhaps the Viper survived the Star League and the Succession Wars. If so, and if it served in large enough numbers, or perhaps being put back into production, it would get an upgraded version in 3040s.
The Viper's role would be heavy ECM-support platform. Endo-steel is used to free weight for upgrades, with the ECM suite itself being placed to right torso. SRM-6s are replaced with 2 Streak-2s in each arm, their ammo moved to left torso and CASEd. The small lasers got upgraded to small pulse lasers.

My intent here was to emulate the haphazard TRO3050 "upgrades". Figure i accomplished that reasonably, striking balance between OK and "uh ok".

Oh, didn't even think of LRM-10s. Maybe a variant with those...
I figured the "barrel ends" could be missiles, hence SRMs which are individually larger than LRMs are.

Didn't want 4xML and missiles as it'd be too similar to the Catapult. Though i will admit the Crusader isn't that different as a whole...

The good thing about vague art is that you can justify weird shapes and things as you wish :P

One more, a hypothetical "Project Phoenix" variant.

Mostly an upgrade with modern tech rather than radical reworking. Endo-steel stays, but a light fusion engine is used as well. Double heat sinks are used. Freed tonnage was used to add armor, swap the flamers for MPLs, lasers are upgraded to ER models, SRMs to Streak-6s, C3 Slave was added. Finally, the 'Mech got MASC as well, making it highly mobile, even if it can't both run and jump at once.

Torso squares could be justified as searchlights.

Forearms could mount the Crusader weaponry  and I definitely dig the jumping movement.    About to head to Disneyland, but part of me is wondering about making it a 5/8/5 55-tonner, so its weight is smack dab in between the Phoenix Hawk and Crusader, with two medium lasers in each arm, SRM-4s in the legs, and a bunch of heat sinks.

Yet another 55-tonner? Are the Wolverine, Shadow Hawk, and Griffin not enough ;D

I did consider 5/8 60 tonner, dropping heat sinks and maybe armor would allow that easily. But i think it might be similar to some of the Ost 'Mechs then.

It also works as a 60-tonner, if not quite as efficient:

I thought about Gio's suggestion myself, but, 60 tons 5-8-5 w/ hands armed with ML, SRM/LRM,  it just felt too Quickdraw to me.

I like the 4-6-4 movement of the OP, its not a common curve in 3025 Heavies.

Though as I mentioned above, I think I'd put twin ML's in the arms.

Its a solid set up able to shoot in any direction with more than the "typical" 1 ML in the arms or 0 that we see in a lot of 3025 models.

Looking at it I'd add a completely unused weight slot to the originals: 40 tons, 5/8/5. 8 tons armor. 13 SHS. All the weapons in the arms: 2 MLs, 1 MG, 1 SRM2 in each. 1 ton MG ammo in the RT, 1 ton SRM ammo in the CT.

I always thought that one (the drawing) was the one referred to as a Chameleon.  I will have to go through all of my old stuff from the '80s and see if I can find references.

The Chameleon's original art is featured in 2nd edition manual, and it got newer art in TRO3058. It is quite different looking 'Mech from this one.

The pic in this thread, and from the thread were it came up, is from Blaine Lee Pardoe's archives.

Easier to look at Sarna:

The main image is the 3058 art, the gallery's first pic is the original Chameleon.

Good idea.

And the royal version could retain the SRM6s, while upgrading to have DHS, ERLLs, Ferro & CASE.
