How big is your battlefield?
« on: 28 September 2014, 08:40:18 »
How many map sheets do you typically use in your game? For users of MegaMek, does the number of map sheets you employ go up when playing on MegaMek vs playing the actual board game?

When I actually played the board game, we'd always use a 2x2 set up, generally because this was the largest space we could fit on the dining room table. Nowadays in MegaMek I still generally stick with 2x2, but will sometimes increase the number to 3x3 or 4x4.

i usually use terrain rather than mapsheets now for most games in person - and before my FLG closed recently, had table space for the equivalent of 3*3 games.

With MM, I definitely use bigger maps.  While it takes a bit longer to get stuck in, I like being able to maneuver.

Since I really only play via MM these days, I tend to prefer bigger maps, in the 3x3 or 4x4 range. That way even if my opponent and I bring ASFs, there's still room to maneuver and dogfight.

In my old tabletop days 3x3 was normal though our battalion v battalion games would us up to 6x6. Largest was 9x9 combined arms regiment city brawl. Took us almost a week to complete.

My normal MM games are 2x2 up to 4x4 depending on number of units and if I'm using artillery.

No maps. Tabletop only. I guess so far I'm lucky that my lfgs has 12+ up to 4'x8' solid oak tables.

2 or 3 by 4 maps when using mapsheets is my preferred scale, but I like to run big battles.

For terrain games, we usually take up the entire 4' x 4' table. If it's a scenario using hexmaps, then it depends entirely on the scenario, but usually no more than four maps -- and most of the time it's just two maps.

Built a lot of my own custom maps, 32x32, for MM . . . and usually I use them 2x2, so 64x64 which means 4x4.  It gets interesting using the city maps and you easily realize how spread out your forces are in a city- a company of mechs even with armor and BA cannot spread across 2 klicks to form a front.

The plain, hill and mountain maps make it easier to get coverage from small forces as long as they have decent movement and long range weapons.

As many as I can.  Never less than a 4x8 foot surface and I don't use mapsheets rather I've got terrain cutouts I place on a simple tablecloth with a 1 inch hexagonal pattern on it.  If I've got time and people I'll shove everything out of the way and use the floor of both bays of my two-car detached garage as a playing surface with terrain features randomly scattered across it and everything measured with tape measures and templates made from old bent hangers.

In MM when I play literally I measure my playing area in square miles.  Because that's how big real battlefields are and the sort of room you need to engage in true maneuver warfare even with small groups.

2 X 2 is our most common with occasional 2 X 3 .

Using 1.5 inch hexes going more than that takes up a lot of room .

That's been usable from lance size per side to company size but
seems crowded above 8 units per side if all are mechs .

A little less so if combined arms are common .

IMHO -the TYPE of units used can make your gaming area seem larger or smaller
then it really is .

played everything from a single map board to two 6' by 16' tables laid out side by side with an aisle in between.  prefer at least 4 maps at minimum.

Rule of thumb is tossed out the window where space is concerned.

Generally I use 1x2 to 1x3 or 2x2 and if I really have room 2x3. Number of units I adapt or not adapt to the space concerned, but all games end up being fun as heck.

Normally 3x3 but we play with floating maps so that it is effectively an infinite sized board because we don't like the idea of board edges you can pin a fast mover against.   If I wanted to play on a fixed board, I would play go or chess.

2*2 is the norm, occasionally 2*3. Table size is our main limitation.

2x2 because nobody has a table that can handle anything bigger.

Long ago we used 2 or 4 maps depending on game size, but we have used a 4ft by 6ft table for the past 10 + years.

3x2 maps arranges so the total area is more squarish than rectangular, when it comes to live games, but that's as much a function of available space.  Depending on what I'm doing in MM, any where from that same 3x2 to 3x4.

Need to make a point to find some MM opponents to try some of the bigger maps.

Generally either 2x2 or 2x3, because it's difficult to reach past the middle of anything wider.  In MegaMek, I've played 3x3, but generally stick with 2x2 or 2x3 because it takes too long otherwise before the slower stuff comes into range on a map with woods or intervening hills.

In MegaMek, I've spent 30+ turns trying to find the last enemy unit, which turns out to be a hovertank surrounded by woods, a 'Mech in a water hex it can't climb out of, or something parked in some hidden alcove in a line of hills.  Adding more mapsheets makes it worse.

2x2 because nobody has a table that can handle anything bigger.

My ceiling had so much more room, but it didn't work well with metal mechs falling from the sky.  #P

I have not played Megamek for a while, but the games I would usually play I would use 3X3 to 5x5 since it would take some time to get to the objective and maneuver would be larger part of the game.

We have been playing with 2 mapsheets for two players, moving up to three players, 4 mapsheets seem appropriate.

We started on the starter box's maps, but then decided to make a massive upscaling after more miniatures were procured. So now, we use 4'x6' mapsheets (Or the occasional 4'x8' map, for mixed-force experimental battles)
