Motorized and Mechanized Infantry
« on: 05 April 2018, 20:46:40 »
Hello all, my question is about basing and model components as well as rules:
Motorized infantry (bikes, jeeps, snowmobiles, etc) and Mechanized infantry (Tracked, wheeled, hover trucks)
When you field these, do you need different figures for them mounted to move and dismounted to fight? Especially the Mechanized, who ride trucks, does the truck itself count as a target? Or is it a magically disappointing truck once the shooting starts?
Related is buildings and structures: Can Mechanized/Motorized infantry enter buildings and rooftops?
I'm thinking of adding them to a unit but I'd like to know the cans and can't of them first. Thank muchness!!

It's less of a headache than it is in CBT/Boardgame BattleTech, actually.

Make note of the movement code on the infantry unit's card, and the terrain restrictions for those movement codes.  That neatly answers whether the units are even allowed to go into buildings/etc.

To answer a specific question: no you don't use different minis/figures to designate whether mechanized infantry are in or out of their vehicles... they're always in their vehicles for gameplay purposes.  The only time infantry tracks whether its inside or outside of a transporting vehicle is when it's two different AS cards entirely involved.  One for an APC (or big transport for motorized infantry with big cargo space requirements), and a second for the infantry themselves.

Think of motorized/mechanized as being meaningless terms in AS.  They're in-universe terms that have no rules significance.

Ah yes, thanks Tia Dai! I didn't even consider the move type. So while Mechanized Infantry (wheeled) has infantry in the name, on the table they are essentially a wheeled vehicle? I can live with that.
Might  be more fun to use Foot infantry and a bunch of separate basic wheeled APCs...

Right, if you combine basic foot infantry with tracked/wheeled/hover APCs, you in effect get what's called mechanized infantry in universe.  The foot infantry can obviously go into buildings or such after they dismount their APCs.  of course at the same time there are AS cards for "mechanized" infantry, which as a single AS unit cannot split the infantry out from its organic APCs.

Yep, there is mechanized infantry ... they type that can leave the vehicle, and run to the latrine... and mechanized infantry, where they are bolted to their vehicles, and we don't ask where the recycled food goes.......LOL

It does make foot platoons interesting, and useful, again.

it is best to think of Mechanized Infantry (Wheeled) as being like this 82nd Airborne Patrol:

troops fighting mainly from a vehicle rather than on foot.

that would be more Motorized Infantry.

a good rule of thumb:
Motorized Infantry = motorbikes, quadbikes, dune buggies
Mechanized Infantry (wheeled) = jeeps, humvee's, trucks.
Mechanized Infantry (tracked) = halftracks, Snow Trac's, tractors, and light APC's like the M113 or Bandvagn 206.

there is a little overlap.. you might have jeeps at the motorized level too, but it would be safe to assume that mech.Inf(tracked) is an uparmored design while a motorized unit would have a stripped down and probably open topped version.

most likely they'd be SRM or LRM motorized Infantry. those are lighter jeep type vehicles.

Yeah but at least with that, the soldiers were to dismount to fire...  you know with those Suzuki Samurais someone going to try to fire on the move and roll it.

By the way were were those Suzuki Samurais from TT?

eh, those aren't that bad. just an odd choice of vehicle, that's it.

the US Army used to do much the same, before we got the Humvee.

that's the BGM-71 TOW missile.

and it could be a lot worse. could be these..

I know Crocketts are tiny, but is that genuinely a nuclear jeep?

yep. mounting the M28 Davy Crockett system,  comprised of a 4.7-inch (120 mm) recoilless rifle (which was a fairly standard anti-tank weapon to be found on jeep at the time) in a specialized mount to allow for the high ballistic arc required to throw the warhead the full 1.25 miles/2 km.

interestingly, this appears to be the version who's expy appears in Ideal War, as those Davy Crockket-I's were fired from jeeps.

there was also the M29 version, fired from a tripod mounted 6.1-in (155 mm) recoilless rifle, with a longer range of 2.5 mi/4 km. that one was typically carried by trucks or APC's.. but it was less mobile because the weapon had to be broken down and set back up when moved. the smaller M28 just required parking, loading, and aiming, followed by stowing.

of course, the weapon had only a 20 ton yield with a fairly tiny blast effect. main danger was the radiation.. instantly lethal dose within 500ft/150m, and fatal levels within a quarter mile (400 m).
