about type of movement (m) for motorized infantry
« on: 07 March 2019, 07:24:51 »
Hi there. I didn't used conventional infantry up to now that I'm building a new force, and now I realized that motorized infantry doesn't distinguish between hover, wheeled or tracked, they just stand as (m).

Why doesn't they apply the type of movement of the motorized vehicles they use?

I think you are confusing motorized and mechanized. Mechanized has hover, wheeled and hover versions and they would be labeled as such in AS.  Motorized doesn’t, so there’s no need for AS to have those for Motorozed.

I stand corrected. I thought that infantry mounted on bikes, trikes and mini buggies counted only as motorized infantry, but reading through TRO 3085 I see that they can be stated as mechanized (fast recon of the Hell's Horses riding single seat hovers) or as motorized (firefighters of Davion riding on mini buggies).

Yeah, I'm not sure the reasons/details of the differences between mechanized/wheeled and motorized.  I know how they differ as far as rules mechanics, but as far as what kind/size of vehicles they are using, or how to decide if a concept should be mechanized versus motorized....no idea. :)

I envisioned these types of infantry as you stated with those pictures. But my confusion raised from the fact that, for example, the hell's Horses fast recon infantry (tro 3085) rides in individual hover bikes but are stated as mechanized.
Same with vtol infantry (also tro 3085) which uses individual "vtol backpacks" but are stated as mechanized.

General Nonscientific Rule With Plenty Of Exceptions #1: If the vehicle in question looks like it can provide decent protection from infantry-grade weapons, it's more likely to be mechanized instead of motorized. (Remember, mechinf take half damage from other infantry for this reason, but double damage from big guns because those are more likely to kill an entire vee in one hit.)

General Nonscientific Rule With Plenty Of Exceptions #2: If the vehicle in question looks like it does not use wheels(or in some cases tracks), it's much more likely to be mechanized instead of motorized. (Note that aside from looser terrain restrictions due to their small size, motor movement behaves a lot like wheeled movement. They certainly don't hover or fly.)

General Nonscientific Rule With Plenty Of Exceptions #3: If the vehicle in question looks like it can fit through the front door of a TARDIS(a.k.a., almost any cargo carrying combat vee in Battletech), it's more likely to be motorized instead of mechanized. (Motor troops can be carried by any transport with enough space, while even very small mechanized units require big units such as Large Support Vees or orbital shuttles.)
