Yet another 32x34 board
« on: 23 January 2020, 20:16:34 »
I've gone and ended up doodling another 32x34 board design. I don't know whether it was the result of seeing the recent news reports from Newfoundland, or seeing some old Advanced Squad Leader maps for the Russian front, but I had a hankering for sculpting a frozen valley. The default tileset for this map is 'snow'. This does make it quite hard to spot the fact that there are a few hexes of Deep Snow and some more of Light Snow. But that's snow for you - you don't know how deep it is until you suddenly sink into it (cue a story from my childhood, excised because no-one else cares!) Most of the map is just 'snow', though, rather than Deep or Light ... so effectively just open ground that will make non-WoB units stand out, unless they're in winter camo.

Anyway, it's a wintery valley with a road running the length of it through scattered (but quite dense) woods, and a river that meanders partway down and then heads off to one side between the hills.

32x34 FrozenValley1

(I've got another idea for a frozen map, thanks to the Abandoned Engineering TV series, and my notebook has some more ideas for my coastal series of maps, too, but I've not actually made the new ones yet - once I've done a couple more, I'll do an updated .zip file to replace the current 'DFL' folder in the distro.)

Things that I have learnt through clicking too fast on 'Move Done' on MegaMek: Double-check the CF of the building before jumping onto it, check artillery arrival times before standing in the neighbouring hex, and don't run across your own minefield.

"Hmm, I wonder if I can turn this into a MM map."

Surprise, surprise, I made another one - this time a small community, carefully built above the water level in case of meltwater floods.

32x34 FrozenValley2

And, in an unexpected marvel of design, this one can fit on any side of the previous one, should you want a 64x34 or 32x68 map.

The .zip will be along in the next week or so.

It's almost like you designed them that way...  ^-^

I've not actually managed to narrow down the options sufficiently to list them in a concise poll - but I will put up an 'ideas?' post to see what people might be interested in.

So I post a comment up on Facebook and had some ideas (kinda meh) in my opinion.  But I got PM'd an interesting one.

The old NAIS 4th Succession War books had battlemaps with a basic scale (yes large).  They've never been made into official maps.

Could be very interesting to see those made.

That is ... large! Big huge swamp. Interesting idea.

Hmmm ... I don't know about building something quite that large (30km x 50km swamp?) - but a big swamp map with a river running through it ... [opens .txt file to start making a list of ideas]
That's enough ideas for a poll here, anyhow ... and I'll ask for other suggestions.
And I've got some other cues in some old wargaming books, too.

Thanks!
