BattleTech: Secret Mission
« on: 01 July 2024, 21:53:57 »
I do not know if anyone else ever played with the Secret Mission cards later RISK games incorporated to change up the dynamics.  The idea is to try out some non-standard objectives to make a brawl a bit different as well as seeing who can mask their objectives from other players as long as possible.

6 points on the map to control, replaces the continents- gives remote control to a turret?
Specifically set 1 for BA (bunker) & 1 hull down position for vehs, both center placements?

9k army- must have 2 BA, 2 Veh (doing 5 points damage per turn min), and 3 mechs minimum- skills included, no difference greater than 2 skill levels.

Secret Mission Cards

Kill 3 units each w/15 LRMs or more (Hauberk BA would count, they are a LRM20)

Kill 4 units each with 6 SRM or more tubes (does NOT count BA)

Kill, cripple or put into forced withdrawal all of Force 1, etc

Kill the 3 heaviest units of Force 1, etc

Kill 5 AC/LBX/UAC equipped units

Kill 5 PPC or LL variant equipped units

Kill 3 BA if 2 opposing players, 5 if 3 opposing players, 6 if 4 opposing players
Note, you can be ‘assisted’ in this goal if another player kills any opposing player’s BA

Take the leg off of 2 mechs w/o destroying them- Salvage is King
Immobilizing 2 vehicles can substitute for 1 mech- player MUST have fired on a target that loses a leg/immob for credit
The targeted units must survive (no coring) to victory, this card puts called shots in effect

Kill 400 tons of mechs
                Must get the killing blow

Kill 500 tons of enemy equipment
                Must get the killing blow

What do folks think?

This works in Risk because there aren't a lot of unit types. In BT it would be entirely possible you keep drawing objectives that simply can't be completed. Maybe the entire OpFor doesn't have any ballistics, maybe they didn't bring BA, or tanks. They would have to be incredibly generic objectives.

Sure, but then you pull that card from the deck just like you did for 'Eliminate the Red Player' when no one chose the Red team.

As for BA/armor, that is why I listed they were required in the force mix.  Granted, they could be a pair of GDL Scouts with something like 45 BV each which lets you put the 8.1k BV towards the mechs & tanks . . . it is a choice, just hope your opponent does not draw 'kill BA' card.

I would like to see the possibility for inclusion of standard Infantry. It would give the need to vary load outs a bit, since it is slightly difficult to wipe a whole platoon of PBIs with Gauss/PPC.

Not really a fan of the differentiation between LRM & SRM kills. It might be a bit interesting to see it boiled down just getting a kill with the specific weapon type. By that, I mean that the actual deathblow was delivered by the necessary weapon. Then it could be acquired by units at less than full strength or by deciding the best order to determine hits from a unit with multiple weapon types like a Shadow Hawk.

I think the “kill X tonnage” cards should be changed to “kill X percent of enemy force”, on the off chance that an opponent does not bring 400+ tons. Also, not a fan of the requirement for delivering the killing blow, as I would hate to have a third parties Locust get the kill on the Atlas that I have hit with 300+ damage over the last several turns.

Lastly, these would be unfortunately redundant in a standard “kill ‘em all” style game.

I envisioned 'kill x tonnage' being where a player would be trying to kill from multiple players to reach the goal- after all vehicles are easier to kill.

That makes more sense. It did not even remotely begin to click in my brain that there would be multiple players, despite the analogous comparison to risk.
