Special 'Mech Hit Location Table
« on: 28 July 2024, 01:58:58 »
I recall from older editions that elevation differences used this table, but the only references I can find now are for Arty special ammo. Is this still used for shots from a difference in elevations?

There's no difference in hit locations based on elevation.  The one exception to this is physical attacks if you're one level higher or lower than your target: if you're higher, then kicks are made on the punch table, and punches can't be made, while if you're lower, punches are made on the kick table and kicks can't be made.

used to be that ranged shots which were at a target behind partial cover, they used the punch tables. this was unbalanced and prone to headshots. so way way back they got rid of them in favor of the current situation where you use the standard hit chart, and just don't take damage to the areas of the mech behind cover.

nowadays such tables only apply to melee attacks, and only certain ones.

Until Errata'd, Cluster Artillery, and a few others, would use the "Shot from Above" Hit Location Table (which was very similar to the Punch Table).  It was deleted with the 5th Printing of Advanced Units and Equipment.

So, it's only used when an Infantry unit in a Building is shooting at a Mech in the same Hex as they are, while they are higher than the 'Mech's base (i.e Level 1+).  (Total Warfare pg 175).
