In the interests of getting awesome pics going again, I've got a BD Marauder for the 1st Canopian Cuirassiers that I did for a LotB painting contest a while back that my local group told me I never posted up here. So, I'll rectify the mistake and break in the board at the same time!

That's a very nice Marauder you got there.
-
I like the scheme, but perhaps a little good blash wash would punch it up a bit? Just a thought...
-
I can't quite put my finger on why, but even though the yellows are impressive (a hard color to paint I know, after 40-odd commissioned Imperial Fists), somehow, I find the infantrymen more impressive.
Maybe because I just painted up like 7 bases of them with 7 infantrymen apiece so I know quite well how hard it is getting even THAT much detail on those buggers.

I like it Darrian.
How did you do the laser crystal bulbs on the arms?

Craft beads.
I kicked around for a while trying to figure out a way to do good jeweling that didn't look like jeweling. I was rooting through my wife's craft supplies when I noticed these and jammed 'em into the weapon ports to see what they looked like. And Lo! They didn't suck! :D

Amusingly, I did a black wash the first time I did yellow (a commission for Imperial Fist Space Marines). It turned out awful. Evidently, you want to shade yellow with brown not black. What looks weird about this MAD is that it's the old Battledroid version - there's not a lot of panel lines to break up the yellow, and so it kind of glares at the eyes. It' a mostly-unavoidable side effect of the scuplt and color scheme, I think. Somebody who actually knows color theory could probably tell you better than it.

Transparent red plastic beads.

I have 6 of these. Something isnt quite right about it.....
got it. top gun... Thats not original to the BD. The original is reallllllly thin with a sight piece on the end.... Like this:
was the gun a replacement? Ir was the tip of the gun broken off? It looks original except for the very thin part at the end... I have both oval and hex bases here and all the guns look like the one in my pic above.
As for the paintjob, I LOVE the yellow. I have 4 mads here that need paint, so I will perhaps try and replicate that one here....

Loving the purple. Yeah black wash is either bang-on or not. There is no inbetween.
-
I like it, nothing like a school-bus yellow Marauder to let peope know you mean business. 8)

You mean brown washing? It has to do with shading and tinting vs mixing colors. When you add black, you're shading and the vibrance of the color decreases and decreases. With such a light color like yellow, it gets ugly fast. Mixing in brown does a good job of moving you around on the color wheel to a different (and pleasing) hue. The other problem is that a lot of subtlety doesn't show up in photographs so you need to be almost overly bold with color variations. That's how Pendragon comes up with such marvelous super-saturated minis; a style not far from the 'eavy metal of <game title redacted>. He also does a lot of good light manipulation to accentuate all those saturated blends.
I really like the mini (a lot). It's a good execution and you pulled off a very very hard color. If I were to improve the shadows on the mini I'd try some panel lines in a very deep orange/brown to highlight what panel definition there is.

I cast the Mech myself from a leftover (and now gone) master mold at IWM. It's about as original as you can get. ;)
The really funny part about the Mech is that there's actually an honest-to-god "jewel" in the cockpit...it's just so far back in there you can't get anything from it. OK, maybe just funny to me then.

Sadly I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to washes and what-not. I've picked up a few Citadel washes and had passable results with them, but even I realize there's a huge difference between a well-painted mini and one that you've hodge-podged together that somehow still manages to get compliments from fat 13-year old virgins down at the gameshop.

It's Yellow, its Battledroids, and it's Canopion!
I call that a Winner!
-
Whoa! I'm seeing double! Two awesome Marauders! :)
-
Looks very nice I am a fan of the yellow [rockon]

love how the yellow came out. there is a guy where i play 40k that has a full on imperial fists aremy the same color yellow. realy sharp looking too.
one of these years i want to try and get my hands on a battledroids marauder. for now i'll just make a drool puddle on my desk oggling yours. [drool]

That's nice. O0 I recently stripped the one mini I had in this scheme because I didn't like it anymore. I've had the idea to do one for some time now. Nice to have this one in a relatively empty forum to refer to!
-
Yellow is soooooo hard to do. I'm ok with it, but mine comes out more brown mustard...
-
Black wash does not work with yellow. You actually want a chestnut or flesh wash to get the best effect.
-
Nice 8)
-
I love the yellow, it's a really hard colour to do right, and you did it perfectly, well done O0
-
Looks excellent! Wish whenever I use yellow it would come out half as good.
-
Nice Marauders!
Here is my BD Marauder (with friends) with the tiny gunsight at the end of the barrel.

Ouch. This purple so smooth, that it hurts.
Thank you for it. Marik's "gems" so very rare...
-
Great way to break into the new forums. Sweet ride.
-
Your use of color is really nice and the wash is the perfect color. That yellow is hard to paint with, most of the time it doesn't really paint but smear.
-
Loving the purple. Yeah black wash is either bang-on or not. There is no inbetween.
+1 8)
But then I'm partial to purple.
-
The legs on the bus go STOMP STOMP STOMP....... [notworthy]
-
OMG! Must get a Battledroid Marauder! [rockon] [notworthy] :o :o :o :D :D
-
Looks even better in person than it does in this pic. Nice job Rob!
-
I remember the contest you entered this in. Still looks good. :)
-
Nice. Very bright, but nice. 8)
-
Always heartwarming to see some nicely done Marauders like these! [rockon]
Regarding how to do yellow, there was an excellent tutorial by jjpens, but apparently the link has gone dead. Does anyone know if it's been posted somewhere again? I hate to lose my archived pages...
-
Beautiful work on the Marauder. O0
-
Very nice yellow - I think the sheer size of the pic is making it look a bit grainy. As for the beads, that's a good idea; I think I have some seed beads lying around the house from one of my other projects, will try it on my bashed Maddy

Great job on the Mad [rockon]
Love the old minis.
-
Awesome old-school work!
-
What are those sticking out fo the base? Not in figures but those long tulip looking things?
PS can we get more awesome Marauders in this thread?
-
Looks like florist's wire with a dollop of glue on the end.

Pretty close: toothbrush bristles with a drop of Zap-a-gap. Makes great waterside foliage (there's a tiny pond next to it, but it's very hard to make out in the pic).

Seconded. I have been getting good results using GW's Dark Flesh to shade yellow.
To make up for the lack of panel lines you could try to apply a few controlled washes of Dark Flesh where natural shadows would be, for example towards the underside of the torso or below the turbine/tank/whatever thingies, the sides of the weapon pods on the arms, ... This would break up the yellow and add more depth to the miniature.
Impressive work with a difficult color nonetheless :) I really like how the infantry miniatures give a sense of scale. They really make the Marauder look huge.
-
Ahhh, the classic Marauder. Nice to see one of those every now and then.
Nice job on the base.
-
Good Yellow!!!!!!!!
-
That's Beautiful!!! Just pretty
-
I can do desert yellow! But bright yellow - too hard! Maybe it's time to be challenged.
What other units have a primarily yellow scheme? Wolf's Dragoon's Aerospace fighters are "canary" yellow,Lyran Alliance 1st Coventry Jaegers quickly spring to mind. Anyone want to give it a go and post a picture? Rather than just talk about it .....
