For me, it's the same old same old.  Currently working on an Austin 10 that another shop has been "working on".  $900 for a carb rebuild?  Really?  And you should see what they did to the float. :o

What I want to know is this. I drive a Focus with a 2.0L that calls for my oil to be changed every 3000 miles, yet the EXACT SAME engine in a Euro Focus asks for it to be changed every 15000. Whats the deal? Do we use different oil here or have I just been Big Oil's B all these years?

3k miles has been the rule of thumb in the US for ages.  My Toyota is 5k.  15k sounds a little high to me.
Title: Re: The Hall Auto Repair Shop and Mopar Hall of Fame
Post by: Wombat on 27 January 2011, 13:39:18
Yes, but if the engine has the SAME PART # and Europe has it clearly listed as 15K, what other explanation could there be?
Title: Re: The Hall Auto Repair Shop and Mopar Hall of Fame
Post by: Damage Inc. on 27 January 2011, 13:56:24
It probably has to do with the warranty.  FordUSA will not warrant an engine that does not change its oil every 3k miles, while FordEurope really doesn't care.

Even though they are the same car from the same company, each has its own policies and procedures.

Ergo, someone is Big Oil's B.  :P

Best way to know when to change your oil? Have an analysis done. Around here NAPA sells a kit that you put some oil in and send off and the company sends back an analysis. You get A LOT of data back, but it also tells you if your oil needs to be changed, or how much longer you should be able to go.
Myself (I have a fair amount of mechanical training) and my friends (2 mechanics and one teaches mechanics) all do 5K with conventional(Valvoline) oil. Synthetics are a whole different ball game.

I'd like to change oil on the car more often, but so far it hasn't hurt the few times it's gone a couple thousand over.... the van I drive so little that I change it just to freshen once I hit 3,000.

Currently working on:

1971 Challenger R/T - complete restoration - next step are restoring the brake booster, heater box and get the dash assembled and installed

1987 Porsche 944 Turbo - need to get whatever holds in the back of the sunroof and figure out the klunking that happens when coming to a stop

1975 Plymouth Trailduster Sport - transmission rebuild

1991 Mazda B2200 - need to figure out what is draining the battery while parked - suspect ignition switch

Mitsubishi Montero SWB (friend's car) - possible engine replacement

1972 Plymouth Duster (friend's car) - pro street conversion, installing mini tubs

Damn - the shop is a hopping

I would seriously question the part of being exactly the same.

The only ones that want you to change your oil every 3000 are the Jiffy Lube losers.

Oil change is dictated by two things - how long until the molecular chain breaks down and how much crap it can carry.  The oil filter helps with the carrying and motor design and oil spec with the breakdown.

Some engines like Porsche and diesels use large capacity and superior filters.  Both my 928 and my Cummins Turbo diesel were changed every 7500 miles.

If I waited 3000 miles to change my oil, it would probably go at least a year and a half between oil changes.  As it is, I change it about every 5 months.

Hey, I like those things!!!  Is it the AWD?

And for the oil change thing, different manufacturers have different ideas as to when they need to be done.  Like I said earlier, Toyota recommends 5k, according to Wombat, Ford is at 3k.  Personally, I would not go over 6k without at least  changing the filter.  The only car the I stress that the oil must absolutely be changed every 3k without fail is the old minis and 1100/1300 series of cars.  Especially the automatics.  With the gearbox in the oil pan and charing oil, it will affect performance and shifting and can lead to failure.

My buddies had an AMC Eagle for a "winter car" (the summer car was a recently repainted 74 Charger). Awesome car. Went through quite a bit of stuff, too. Too bad we were 17 and destroyed it...

Same sad story happened to my friend's '92 Eclipse GSX.  That car was fun, in a sadistic way.  Lots of go, at the cost of no human-shaped object capable of actually fitting in the driver's seat.

Car's that survived my teenage driving:

My mom's 1977 Chevy Monte Carlo (aka "The Mommy Carlo", "The Hawaiian Tropic")
My 1970 Plymouth Duster w/ 550HP 440 - how I did not kill myself I'll never know
My 1969 Plymouth Sport Satellite Convertible - it's 383 just wouldn't blow up
My 1971 Mazda RX-2 - that did blow up
My 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T SE
My 1974 Dodge W100 Power Wagon - blew up one tranny and 4 driveshafts
My 1968 Dodge Charger R/T - blew the doors off a Ferrari Testarossa  8)
My 1969 Plymouth Road Runner
My 1979 Dodge Ram Charger
My 1970 Dodge Challenger 340

That's a lot of cars for a teen and I'm leaving some out  :-\

'Cause I'm that kinda guy, here is a project I did today.

It's the oil strainer out of a 1934 MG PA.  The screen was torn and failing, so I replaced it. 8)

Fresh out of the oil pan, after a rinse in solvent.

All the parts unsoldered.

All cleaned up and with a new screen soldered on.

No, it has a couple chips and scratches that I primarily blame on my wife.  I need to get them fixed, but ponder a complete repaint to a new color.

Yeah, I normally don't color change either.  But in the end, they technically only made 876 of my car.  With a paint change I can make it utterly unique.

Yes - it's common with these new crappy paints - clear coat over base coat.  The clear coat fails and flakes or peals off.

Don't you guys have the sun out there?   ;D :D ;)
Title: Re: The Hall Auto Repair Shop and Mopar Hall of Fame
Post by: Damage Inc. on 12 February 2011, 09:54:12
Mattlov, I would recommend against a color change unless you are willing to do it correctly.  Just squirting paint on the outside is not enough, you need to paint all the areas like door jams, under hood and trunk et al.  Repaint the can the factory color and add highlight (racing stripes or something).  This will end up looking a lot better and keep the resale up unless you try to pass it on to someone who doesn't know better.

I can't tell you how many cars I've inspected and found a really nice paint job and opened the door, trunk, or hood (or all three) and found the dingy dirty original paint in a non-complementary color (think British racing green over purple).

Yeah, I would pay for a full pro repaint.  There are a couple places around here that do it, and do it right.  It just isn't cheap.  I'm just thinking of the repaint anyway, I need to paint my house far more than I need my car painted.

Yeah, that is one ugly car. I had a 79AMC Concord (the Eagle's predecessor) and it was uglier, all I can remeber about the car is the Green paintjob (w/gold striping) with a tan interior. I called it the Boogermobile due to the coloring. I did love the big Inline 6 under, though

The Aztek isn't pretty, but there are uglier things out there.  Mid-late 90's Taurus, any Buick Rendezvous (same body, different shell), Honda S2000's...

Once again, very personal.  I don't find the S2000 to be that bad of a car (stylisticly speaking).  Then again I'm kinda partial to late fifties and early sixties mopars.

I know.  After it came out most other cross-over type SUVs tended to look really similar, just not as pronounced of angle.  I liked the Aztek, personally.  I wish it would have gotten the 3800 V-6 in it instead of that awful 3.4.  That was my only real complaint about it.

The front of the Aztec followed Pontiac design well, the thing that ruined the thing for me was the back end.  Suvs should not be hatchbacks.

True, but on some, like the new Charger, I think the rear of the car really makes it great.

My point is if you look at the Aztec from the nose on, she is a rather stylish and cool looking suv, just never, EVER, walk Around to the trunk.  All of this should be taken with a certain grain of salt, as I am a humongous Pontiac lover, and kind of hate SUVs.

There are several SUVs/Station wagons that start out great on the nose, but the styling fails as you get to the back.  It's almost like they ran out of money and has to just chop off the back of the clay block.

Are there any truly "entry-level" Mercedes that aren't used?

I love me my station wagons. I had an 85 Ford Country Squire, whom I named the Big Beaver, because, well it was covered in beaver wood. Had the fuelie 5.0. While not the quickest car around, I did manage to surprise more then a few individual in my cruising days. Even picked up a (toothless) girl in it. I quickly dropped her off.

I think it was more the wagon you chose that shocked and surprised.  Anyone can love any car.  I loved my rusty beater at 16, because it ran and I got to go where I wanted.  To each their own.

I love Cavalier wagons for simple reasons:

A) I want a small car that's still useful.
B) I want a reliable car, and I think (with past experience) that the 2.8/3.1 V6 is as sound as a pound.
C) Believe it or not, I've had one of these up to 140. :D
D) It's almost a running joke with me, but for some reason the Cavalier's (or god forbid I ever find one) and the Firenza just did it for me.

That said, I like the old Vista Crusiers, the Geo Storm Wagon, the Passat, and that weird Nissan Pulsar NX w/ the wagon back. I also like some sports cars, but their a bit on the odd side too, the Subaru XT and SVX, the Dodge Daytona (oh, god, the IROC), and the last of the Cougars and T-birds.

That is because the 3.8 WAS bulletproof.  When I worked for a Buick/Pontiac dealership we had a magazine that had the best 100 engines of all time.  The 3.8 liter Series II V-6 was number EIGHT.

Doesn't sound so impressive if it is number 8?  None of the other top 10 were even CAR engines.  They were plane and train engines.  The next car engine was 14th, IIRC.  And it was up high as one of the first "efficient" car engines.

The GM 3.8 is a great engine.  It will run forever if you treat it OK, you don't even have to baby it.

Smallest engine I have driven was a '92 (I think) Pontiac LeMans with a 1.8 liter.  Largest is my current ride, a 6.0 LS2 V-8.

Couple mid-80's 5.0 and 5.7 liter V-8's as well in those wonderful Caprice chassis.

Had a couple V-6's in my day, a 3.1 in my '94 Sunbird, and than another in a Mercury Marquis, but I don't remember the size.  I despised that car.  What is worse is I had two of them at differing points in my driving career.

Engine I used the longest was the 2.4 liter in my Sunfire GT.  I still have a hard time believing I drove that thing for 7 years.

Mopar: I am very envious of your friend. Though if I were allowed my druthers, mine would be Rally Red.   I would also settle for a T/A in Plum Crazy--if I had too.

There is an engine superior to the 3.8 in durability, however due to it's size it never saw a lot of love in cars. the 4.9/300 cu.in Ford straight six.  MY old roommate ran his POS 80 F150 on a quart of oil for 9 months before it finally died.  His parents told him they would give him a newer truck when/if that failed, which was the impetus for such a bone headed move.  I have heard from others, similar stories of reliability in the engine.  I know for a fact that a 3.8 that has about 2 quarts in it will not make it past the Taco Bell just past the High School.  Good thing I had four other people in the car to help me push it back...

Oh and I miss my 1971 New Yorker. 22 feet of Detroit iron and 440 beautiful cubic inches under the hood.

Sucks having a car built in Australia that isn't produced anymore.

30,000 mile fuel system cleaning, engine tune up, oil change, and new front brakes:  $650.

AFTER the $50 in rebates...

I could have doubled that putting the new tires on it...

I hope to God never to have a car that the engine needs to be pulled in order to do plugs.

I'm curious about the fuel system needing cleaned? If your running good fuel that shouldn't be a problem? Does it sit a lot or anything? I'm trying to come up with reasons as to why you would get build-up of stuff in the FI system.

I try get a tune up every 18 months or so.  I can't let slow performance degradation get me below 400 HP!

Here's the breakdown:

New Front pads and rotor resurfacing:  $225 (After $50 Rebate "savings")
Standard Tire rotation:  $22
4 Wheel alignment: $100
Fuel System Service: $150
Full Synthetic Oil Change: $57
Replace Serpentine Belt: $85 (Belt cost more than labor)

Add in tax and you get right about $650.

They didn't feel the plugs needed replacement when they did the Fuel System check and cleaning, probably saved me an ass-load considering the rest of their parts costs.

Small blocks, typically, are under 400 cubic inches V8 that have a smaller size than their big block cousins.

Size of the block limits usage.  I cannot drop a 454 c.i. big block in a small car without major mods.  However, and small block requires less mods and less shoe-horning, usuallly.

Most manufactures used to have two V8 engines.  The smaller one would be used in intermediate sized cars and the bigger one in full size cars and trucks.  It was just easier for most people to call them out as small block and big block rather than their call out.

Today manufactures have engine series and don't refer to big or small block but things like LT vs LS series.

The big blocks, for the most part, went the way of the dodo.  Stringent EPA regulations and the death of the muscle cars during the 70 and 80 high gas prices made gas guzzling big blocks unattractive to consumers and manufacturers.

Yet we saw the return of big engine sizes.

Dodge has a 6.4L Hemi and the diesel is 6.7L - both pretty darn big

A couple of comments on that.

1-Trucks have lower emission standard requirements from the EPA than cars do.  The 7.4 Triton and 8.0 V-10, et al are for work trucks that need the hoses and torque to haul heavy stuff.

2-the big engines in cars now a days are for specialty cars and the get huge gas guzzler taxes (or squeak by mpg regs by using variable displacement systems).  Gone are the days when you could buy a chevy station wagon with a 409 and three 2bbls, of a four door Newport with a 426 max wedge and cross ram two 4bbls.

When my gf was buying her malibu, I looked at the window sticker on a vette.  Granted, it was the loaded to the gills ZR1 supercharged, but the gas guzzler tax was almost as much as the sticker price on my Yaris.

Also, technology has come forward by leaps and bounds.  My definately non-sporty Yaris has a 1.5l engine rated at 106hp.  The original 283 v8 SBC was rated at 162 hp.  You can now get a whole lot more hp and torques for a lot less displacement.  Add in direct ignition, direct injection, and small, high efficiency turbos, a 4 cylinder can out muscle the muscliest of the classic big blocks.  Granted, they wouldn't hold a candle if you modernized the big block, but that would fall into the EPAs gunsights (426 hemi with DFI and DHEI  [drool]).

Damage,

That's all true but today's cars, for the most part, are heavier thanks to the stupidity of the National Highway Safety Morons.  They think we all need to be in tanks to save us in an accident.

A fine example would be the Honda CR-X which back in the day got 50 MPG.  It's modern day replacement, using a hybrid, only gets 35 and weighs 1000 pounds more.  That's stupid.

I'm sorry, but this hybred crap is overrated.  My Yaris averages 40 mpg (thats all city and rush hour highway traffic jams) and it's not a hybred.  hell, a Metropolitan or Mini (the old ones) can get 25 to 30 mpg, and thats with carburetor, point ignition, and vacuum advance. :o

And I agree that modern cars are bloated with useless crap.  Why do you think racer boiz strip half of the junk out of them?

I can't tell you how many times I've seen a single occupant Ford Excursion out on the highways.  Seriously?  Do you really need a 9 passenger SUV built around the F250 (that's the 3/4 ton truck, for those who don't know)?  And lay off the "Off Road" packages.  The only time that turd goes off road is when you have to swerve onto the shoulder because you are tailgating. As Mopar said, SS versions are just 6.2 liters, natural aspiration.  There are some suspension upgrades as well, different wheel options.  There isn't a whole lot of non-naturally aspirated vehicles in the Chevy line.  Really only the Cruze (1.4 turbo), couple Silverado models, and the ZR1 Corvette.

local mechanic says that based on the vee history, the car is probably a Norfolk "almost flooded"
Vees get swamped during heavy rains, then are cleaned up and resold before flood damage is readily apparent.
Norfolk used car community has a reputation and history of doing this.

Massive engine bays; and I just happen to have a 5.7liter hemi from a dodge ram that was pulled in working condition (all that's wrong is one of the engine mount ears on the block was knocked off).

Pics are entirely possible...

We've also got a Plymouth wagon, 64, I think, but its in need of serious lovin - we bought floorboards, if you get my drift.

My 99 W2500 Quad Cab Cummins Turbo Diesel just hit 200,000 miles.

I've got the 93 360 MPI engine running in my 1975 Trailduster.  Need to replace the transmission dipstick tube O ring and decide how I want to make the front axle part time.

The 1971 Challenger R/T is coming along slowly.  The undercoating has been applied.  We currently struggling to get the vinyl top on because it's just to cold.  Finished painting the dash frame so need to put that back together.  The transmission and sure grip unit should be back in about two weeks.

On a sad note my Porsche 944 Turbo has decided it doesn't want to start - haven't figured out why.

I converted the whole thing.  360 MPI, 4 speed 518 with lock up torque converter and the NV-241 transfer case.

I'll probably take the axles from my 1972 W200 to use under it.  That's been converted to GM disk brakes.   O0

Well to make it all work I had to change over a lot of stuff as Mother Mopar changed a lot of things in 18 years.

Gas tank
fuel lines
wiring harness
heater assembly
dash assembly
steering column
brake booster
wiper motor
radiator
engine
trans
transfer case

I hope you'll post some pics sometimes! Of all the Big 3, I've never owned a Mopar 4x4. I had a sweet 77 D200 that was sea foam green with a 360, but she was only a two-by. A freind of mine had a 93 Ramcharger in High School, and boy was that sweet.

With my current job I've been driving the new Fusions and Taurus around and I have to say, they are pretty damn nice.

Before, the only time "nice" and "Taurus" were in the same sentence was "Sure is nice to get out of this Taurus."  Now, they are something I'd be willing to pay money for.  Not that I have that money, but I'd be willing to pay it if I had it.

I drove a lot of Fords from Hertz.  The old Taurus was total crap.  The Fusion and the Mustang were both a pleasure to drive.  I got 34 MPG with the Fusion.   O0

I got a TRUCK for Christmas!

2007 Dodge Ram 1500 Quad Cab.
swiped this picture from the dealer's website.

already started a list of upgrades I'd like.
straighten out the exhaust system: I want dual headers to dual straight pipes.
add more light: quad set of fog lights in the grill

The Intrepid I had just started falling to pieces.  I wanted to wait til February, but the car wouldn't make it.

The Big 3 trucks don't look bad, but the new Rams drive so much better than the Silverados or F-150s.

Haven't dealt with Toyota and Nissan in a while, and that is just fine by me.

I had an odd one.  The other day I'm at a stop light and it felt I had been just slightly rear ended in my truck.  The guy behind isn't close enough.  Look at the dash and the check engine light is on.  Check everything in the engine compartment and nothing.  So I make an appointment with the dealer.

Truck sits for two days.  Start it up and the light is mow off.  The dealer wants $105 to check if there are any code so I so no thanks.

Couple of days later the light comes on again but this time I see the tach has gone dead.  Then it came back alive and the truck sped up by itself.  So I'm thinking that the ECM is putting it into some kind of "limp" mode.  Very scary.

However I know what's wrong.  The Crank Position Sensor is going wonky.

$64 and an hour of my time and hopefully it's fixed.   O0

MINE is a quad cab.  The dual suicide door option is no longer offered, but they're available on the used market.
Realistically, there ain't much difference.  Four seperate doors is only +150-200 lbs. difference, and they're safer in an accident than the suicide doors.  The frames help protect cab integrity.

Now I'm just waiting on tax refund.
Got my list ready to go:
dual headers>dual pipes
K&N air filter,
and a cold air intake system to get installed.
oh, and the extra foglights in the grill.

Well to me the difference is having a "B" pillar or not.  Your truck has a that and it makes it stiffer, but you are limited by the door size opening when loading things into the truck.

Idle has gone wonky on the Ranger.  The truck will not idle any longer at 650idh RPM but keeps bouncing between 200 and 1000.  If the engine is really cold, air temp today is 20, then it likes to stall at idle.  It goes into the shop monday to get it fixed, which is the downside to a Northern Ohio winter, you can't work on crap till after April.

I hope it's not behind a K&N air filter.  They can leach oil that will get on to the mass air sensor getting it dirty

Here is an oddity on the GTO:

Go to start it, and just get a loud CLICK from under the hood.  Doesn't start, but all accessories function and it goes through the system check and doesn't say anything is wrong.

After a few attempts, it will start.  Once it does start, it doesn't have any trouble starting after that until it has sat for at least 6 hours.

It did get a new ignition, but that was almost a year ago.

I'm stumped on this one, gents.

Nope.  It's still a type 1 motor, but with 94 pistons and a 74 stroke.

Transmission has also been redone, with a 3.88 ring and pinion (ie. basically it's a "freeway flyer"), which brought my RPMs down on the freeway.  For carburation, I'm currently running Solex Kadrons, though I need to either swap out to 30mm venturis (ordered a set a couple months back, and now can't find them, and no one has them in stock), or finally "go big" and get a set of Weber 40s.  I'm also running an electronic ignition module instead of points.

Pics...soon.  Need to wash the car first.

Yeah...those are going to take a while to get out.  The old engine was throwing burnt oil pretty badly, fouling the #2 cylinder spark plug, tossing burnt oil around the engine compartment, soaking the rubber seals....yeah, it was a mess.  That's after some cleaning, but not a full washing.

Talked to the bug guy here at work and he said to stick with the Kadrons and to not use the Webers.  He also said to use a Berg 5 speed gearbox (they add a gear between 3rd and 4th).  He also said that if you are serious about autocrossing you should look at getting a Super Beetle because of the McPherson strut front end.  Apparently this is the easiest way to get a bug to handle like a Porsche.

McPherson strife handle better than torsion bars, just like IRS (independent rear suspension) handles better than swing axle.  There's no doubt that my '66 is at a disadvantage against other setups.

That said...pure efficiency isn't exactly the point.  It's about how much I can get out of my '66. ;)

As for Kadrons vs. Webers, at 2054cc, I'm at about the limit of what Kadrons can handle - actually, a hair past: I need the 30mm venturis to let them breathe more, and I'm seeing the heat buildup without them.  This 2054 originally ran with 40mm Webers - I wouldn't be going to 48s, like so damn many people do, and over-carburate.

 :o

Um, if you get the EMPI copies, yeah, I could see that.  There's a reason why our club jokes that EMPI stands for "Every Mistake Passes Inspection".   ;D

After a certain point, though, Kadrons just do not give you the carburation you need for big engines, and that dividing line is right around the 1915cc to 2054cc range.  Below that, I haven't bothered with Webers - I've run Kadrons on my 1600s (actually 1584cc) and 1641s, and had planned on 'em for my 1776cc.

But, Kadrons on, say, a 2165cc or 2332cc or, Cthulhu forbid, my buddy's modded-all-to-hell 2733cc Type 4 motor?  Yeah, that would be like the shop here in town (that will remain nameless) that built a 1915cc Type 1 motor for someone else's '66 Bug, then threw a 30/31 PICT carburator on it.  She couldn't understand why, within 12 miles of freeway driving, her oil temperature was up around 240 degrees.

The big mistake I've seen in SoCal is that people throw Weber 48 IDFs on their cars, and can't figure out why they run so crappy for street driving, and can't idle worth a damn.  I've seen people trying to run them (or even 44 IDFs) on 1600s, and have to wonder what the heck they're thinking.  That 2733cc in my friend's Porsche 550 replica?  Yeah, he's running 44 IDFs, because anything larger, on a 2.7 liter motor, and he wouldn't be able to drive it on the street.

Webers are great, assuming they're built right, you know how to adjust them (I don't, which is one of the reasons I've stuck with Kadrons), and you're not overcarburating.  Porting out your heads and running larger valves are usually helpful with them, too.    I've seen plenty of Weber setups done wrong, and can see why people would think they're crap.  But, I've also seen plenty of them done right.

Tabby's more Cannonshop's baby, and I wouldn't want to coopt her without permission.  Might do more Sybil.

Well it appears "the boy" has blown the head gasket in our 1991 Mazda B2200.  He has like  an anti-Midas touch.

What should I do?

1.  Fix it myself?
2.  Donate it
3.  Sell it to the wreckers?

A new head and gasket set is $579

It's good shape.  No rust or body damage.  The AC blows cold.  Paint is faded white.  Seats are nice.

It does have an electrical draw that I suspect is coming from the positive battery cable.

It only has 130k miles on it.

Audi Coupe sideswiped by truck - car effectively totaled
Neon SRT-4 - crashed - twice
Neon SRT-4 - stolen - recovered - totaled
S2000 - crashed - twice
S2000 - spun rod bearing
S2000 - car broken into - supposed sabotage of engine - car totaled
STi - engine blown
STi - modified to ethanol - engine blown
Borrowed Mazda Pick Up - killed dog
Borrowed Mazda Pick Up - blown head gasket

Still working on the Royale at the moment.  I'm up to hoses.  There are two coolant lines running to the radiator in the nose of the car.  Is there any reason i can't run a big rubber line to the nose?  The current set up uses aluminum lines, but there is almost as much rubber connecting the entire mess together as there is aluminum piping.  Frankly, it runs through the center of the tub, and considering how much rubber i can see, it might be easier to go full rubber than the mess it currently is.

Appears he managed to get the STi put back together stock and then he offloaded it to Carmaxx.  WHATEVER YOU DO - DO NOT BUY A USED  STi FROM CARMAXX.

The new Dart is an Alfa Romeo and is rather impressive at it's price point.  There are three engine options - I think I would check out the 1.4L turbo that is rated at 40MPG freeway.  I was very impressed with the interior for such an inexpensive car and everything I've read so far has been positive.

Tires are gonna cost a metric buttload of $$$.

then +tax +mount,balance, etc...
I'm thinking it'll come to about $900 - $950.

any idea what is involved in swapping out for a wheel that can take a cheaper tire?

first, you're not gonna get a set of tires for less than 500 bucks unless they are used.  I just put a set of 13" on the boss' Metropolitan and they were over 500.  So if you can find a set of rims for less than 300, you're gonna pay about the same.

Also, the speedo gears are set for a certain tire size, so monkeying around with sizes can affect the accuracy.

based on a certain size of tire.  if you change the diameter of the tire, you change the circumference of the tire.  which changes the distance the vehicle moves in 1 revolution, or speed.

Right so you are stuck with tire size.  Gear ratio no longer matters since it's counting the wheel vs. before it was using the speed of the driveshaft

For me at least it's not worth the extra expense, I'm not going to get anywhere near 70,000 miles without leaving my tires in desperate need of replacement.  Combination of bad roads, frequent use off-roads in forests and construction sites where they tend to get chewed up or cut, etc.  I've actually considered getting an extra set of used skid-steer tires and foam-filling them just for off-road and construction site use to cut down on the tire replacements.

Very light tinny(not tiny) intermittent squeal emanating from the front of my Focus' engine.  The serpentine looks good, there is no obvious fluid leaks, so i'm down to either a bearing in a pump/alternator or a pulley is making the noise.  Any good ways to diagnose this?  I do have access to a lift next weekend.

Does it have an idler or tensioner?  Buddy of mine just lost one of those on his 5.3 GMC

This was a new one that kinda stumped me.

2001 Bonneville SSEi, going along just fine.  Then, it decides it has no doors.  None of the window, lock, memory seat, or side mirror controls function.  The "door open" chime does not go off if the door is open and key in the ignition.  No open door warnings on the information center.

First thought is simple, just a blown fuse.  But, each door has its own separate control module and fuses, and none of them are burnt out.  What does the peanut gallery think?

Yep.  Those aftermarket warranties are not a horrible thing to buy.  They are expensive at initial buy, but worth it.  I also got the catalytic converter replaced at no cost.  So the warranty has basically already paid for itself.  And son the transmission will fail, and the warranty will cover that as well.  All for a $50 deductible.

Awwwwwww, fudge...   Wish I had seen this earlier, I would have had a better answer for you.

First off....   this is a Yugoslavian vehicle, not Czech.

You might need to get the English to Serbian dictionary, I think that might have been the problem.  Or as Clarke Marek said on the other thread, Slovenian might be correct as well.

I admit I had a little bit of a shock (badabum ching) when I had to jump the battery on my new cobalt for the first time (due to an error of mine where I hadn't realized a light got left on all night) and was trying to figure out where the cables hooked on. There was a cover over the battery where there almost wasn't enough to clip the positive cable on so I took the cover off. Much to my surprise it looked like no battery I'd ever seen before, completely covered in fuses. Now I say this because the only cars I'd ever changed a battery on were later 90s at oldest so I kind of felt like frankenstein's monster viewing the angry mob... I wanted to run the other direction.  :D I did get the car jumped, but only after a few obligatory curses as I attempted to find a good place to ground the negative cable.  The whole interior under the hood looks like a plastic lunchbox because everything is covered.... fangled designers and what not.   ;)

I had one of those too. Mine was dark blue with dark blue leather. Ran ok but not a lot of power. First car I ever had with a sunroof, and it didn't leak. It wasn't till later that I realized what a big deal that was for a car from the 80s. The radio was awful but the ac worked. I put it equal to the Fairmont I used to have. The 5 Ave was not as "finky" as the Ford, but no where near as solid as the Delta 88 I got latter. It was many of the "grandpa" cars that I owned as a teen. Then I got a job and bought a Honda that had a sunroof that leaked like a running faucet.

It'll be a couple weeks before I get another chance to go. We'll see, even if I get there, I still have to drive it and see what happens.

The back up plan is to resurrect mom's 1986 LeBaron GTS, we blew up that 2.2 turbo years ago, but it was a neat car.

WHERE the frakin' HECK is the oil pressure sensor located on a 2000 Dodge Neon?

Yes. I know it's on the engine.  I've crawled all over the dang thing, and cannot find the sensor.

The sensor needs replacement because it is triggering false Low Oil Pressure warning lights.

And this idiot light *BLING*ing at me every couple minutes is driving me insane!!!!

Re rebuilt a terrible (not by us) Triumph Spitfire 1500 build.
Striped down an Austin 7 motor.  Now to find parts. 8)
Returning a MGB GT and a MG Midget back to service after sitting for a while

And show prepping a Vanden Plas Princess 4 Litre R to take to a local Italian Car Fest (body design by Pinnin Farina)

I also need to pull the engine on a diesel Taxi for overhaul......

I have a good car now, but not something I want to put a ton into.  I need brakes and tires.  I need a good middle ground for new rotors and pads and a decent all weather tire with some performance capability.  I am a somewhat..um...aggressive driver.  But I must also be able to tackle most weather since I must get to a district office for snow plowing.

What is a good middle ground between cost, performance, reliability, and durability for brakes and tires?

Alright, now I need some electrical help and/or long term GM experience here.

My 2001 Bonneville SSEi is having Security light on at reasonably random times.  After it turns off, there is a MONSTROUS battery draws that drains the battery in under 5 hours.  This is a common problem on Bonnevilles of this generation and something GM SHOULD have recalled a decade ago, but didn't.

The dealership nearby is a bunch of pant-on-head ****** morons, and said my car has no problem.  They just charged the battery.  Unsurprisingly, it was dead again 3 days later.

Have any of you guys seen or dealt with this before?  I have not seen any consistent repairs on this that actually work.  Replacing the whole security system isn't actually enough to repair it.  Would reflashing/replacing the computer be enough to fix this issue?  Any other ideas?

didn't the SSEi model have an optional 'lock down' mode for their alarm system?

sounds like that is trying to activate.

if you haven't check the relays under the hood.

they would be only system that could take so much juice so quick.

any other fuse would pop, I think

Looking at getting a diesel truck in the 6-month to one year time frame.  I can figure out Ford and GM's trim packages and options.  The Ram packages are giving me fits.  Why can't i get the tow brake controller and mirrors on an SLT but you can get them on the upscale Big Horn/Lonestar?  The basemodel tradesmen gets that as an option, but it skips the SLT.

Differences in the wiring harnesses.  I've dealt with this before, you're usually better off going after market for your brake controller anyway, and their wiring to a seven wire flat is screwy at best compared to normal trailer wiring standards.

That options pack also seems to be the only way to get the towing mirrors on the SLT.  Everything else seems to have them as a straight option.

Well, my Bridgestone Ecopia tires are going to be replaced as soon as the new ones get here.  After 41,000 miles the drivers front has a pretty good leak in it.  I have to fill the tire every 5 days or so.  The tires are rated for 50, but given their kinda crap rain and snow performance i'm just going to junk them now.  Ordered a set of Falken Ze-612's.  This ought to be interesting.

I got a new, interesting problem with my Bonneville!  YAY!

As before, 2001 Bonneville SSEi.

Idles WRONG at times, engine revs and drops and tries to die, then revs itself some more.  Never goes higher than about 1500 RPM.  Usually will die.

It then doesn't want to start.  Turns over just fine, but won't catch and stay running.

The BEST part:  It will die WHILE I'm driving.  RPMs don't seem to matter.  And it dies quiet.  No sputtering, no jerking, just a little death.  I don't even notice sometimes.  Battery light is the only light that comes on when it does this.  Battery is only about 4 months old.

Also, a burning smell can be detected at all times.  A plastic/rubber/covering burning smell, not oil or fluid.

I got nothing.  Any ideas?

so it seems that the pinion seal on the Beast has begun to leak.
I've already picked up a quart of the necessary lube and checked the fluid level: it's ok for now.

any idea of the necessary Hours to replace the seal?
2007 Dodge Ram 1500 2WD with 4.7L and auto...............
the parts aren't expensive: less than $100 for all fluids and the seal.
but labor?

It shouldn't be that hard a job, but why did it start leaking?  Pinions shouldn't load the seal in any way.

Dealership fixed 'Da Beast'.  only $217.

the Kid's old Ford Ranger was a totally different: $1400+ to repair the water pump and weld the housing.
say it with me: OUCH.  again, with feeling: OUCH.  like you stepped on a Lego: OUCH.

BUT...
Truck + myriad repairs + registration = $2350.
compared to:
Truck + registration + unknown issues not yet repaired = $2500 -$3000
... I'm still, just barely, a bit ahead.

Sorry that I had to dig up this old post but I thought I would share with my car loving CBT buddies.

Back in October 2015 I bought yet another Muscle Car.  Or I should say I saved it from the clothes of a friend of mine.  It was a car I could not pass up.

It's a love it or hate it car.  Details -

1970 Dodge Superbee Hardtop
440 SIXPACK
4 speed Hemi transmission
4.10 Dana 60 Super Trac Pac
Hemi Orange High Impact Paint
15x7 Rally Wheels
Woodgrain Steering Wheel
Originally sent to Honolulu Hawaii
No Heater or Radio

There were 599 Superbee Hardtop 440 Sixpack 4 speeds made, but this is probably the only one with heater delete.  Basically it's a factory drag car.

Here is a pic of it between my other 'B' bodies

Back in the early 1980s I bought my first 4x4 - a 1974 W100 regular cab short bed Dodge Power Wagon.  360 automatic with 33" tires.  It was Baby Blue and White.

I would come home with it brown from head to toe.  It would take over two hours to just hose the mud off.  My parents were not happy with the brown river running down their driveway.

It is.  I paid $29K for it out the door with all the taxes and fees.  VW is going to pay me between $21.5K and $24K for it with 60,000+ miles on it and me getting to use it for 4 years.  I can keep it but then I get $6000 and they have to fix it which could result in poorer gas mileage and performance.  If they can't fix it I'll be forced to turn it over.

No that's not the situation  :P

The Passat has nothing to do with the Hellcat.

I'll need to replace the Passat and that might be with another Passat.  I can't park the Hellcat at a park and ride which is involved in my super long commute when I go to the office.

OK gang - need your thoughts.

VW is going to buy back my Passat and I need to find a replacement.  Keeping the car would not be the greatest financially.  Plus I'm not happy with the VW maintenance costs.

I need a car that will get my to work which is a couple of days a week at 270 miles round trip.  I need to park it at a park and ride.  Good gas mileage would be nice but it doesn't have to get the 46.5 MPG I get in the Passat.  I loathe automatic transmissions.  I prefer coupes over sedans, but would consider a wagon.

What would you recommend?

OK gang - need your thoughts.

VW is going to buy back my Passat and I need to find a replacement.  Keeping the car would not be the greatest financially.  Plus I'm not happy with the VW maintenance costs.

Couple people with long commutes at work have the diesel Cruze.  They like them so far and haven't had any trouble in three-ish years.

Here's an odd problem.

2001 Bonnevile SSEi.  On occasion, my tachometer will zero out.  No revs registering.  The car is still running just fine.  There is a tiny little hiccup when it does this, but it is so slight it is easy to miss.  One time it did this, the check engine light came on.  Got it checked out, Error code was "Camshaft Position Sensor Failure."  Next time I turned on the car, engine light is off.

Now I don't suspect it is that sensor, because everything I read says if that sensor is bad, it is an engine kill failure.  No starting, no running, nothing if that sensor fails.

I'm running out of ideas.  I know there is SOMETHING wrong, but I sure as hell can't figure out what it is.

It's a crank or cam sensor going bad.  Obviously it's the cam as that's the error you have.

This does not kill the engine always but it can.  It usually goes into limp mode and keeps running.  If it fails totally at start up then it will not start.  While running it will go into limp mode.

I've replaced the crank trigger in my Cummins Turbo Diesel three times  :(

New problem, different car...

My wife's '02 Silverado V6 2WD doesn't want to start.  Acting like it isn't getting fuel.  Fuel pump is audibly working, fuses and relays are intact, and I just changed the fuel filter (which was a pain in the ass).

When the filter was changed I got gas dripped on me from both ends, so it doesn't seem like the fuel line is clogged.  I'm suspecting it is still the fuel pump, but wondering if there was another option I hadn't thought of.

Did you put the fuel filter in the correct direction?  They only go one way.  Your gas drip test is no indicator.

is it fuel injected or throttle body, if it is fuel injected you actually have two fuel pumps, the transfer pump back at the tank and the injector pump up next to the engine. couldn't tell you more than that. Also some trucks have a sock filter on the tank pump that sometimes does need to be cleaned.

Yes there is usually a pump that brings fuel from the tank to the injector pump

Been a long while, but I've got one the denizens of this thread can enjoy reading - mostly because they will be laughing at the misery I had: http://www.cadillacforums.com/forums/northstar-engines-system-technical-discussion/852817-1997-deville-possible-topend-maybe-full.html

Suffice it to say, mom likes her caddies; we lost her old '97 concours, and got a new one, only to find out that the 90s-00s northstar motors were/are notorious for pulling head bolt thread out (lifting heads).

Wow, whatta fun job that was. Never taken a drill to an engine block before ... don't wanna ever do it again!  #P

I need to get moderately rich and put the '67 dart /6 back on the road and stick some handling upgrades into it.

GM has never been good at understanding mating surfaces and bolt strength.  Their fiasco with the 350 diesel in the 80s and the 2.8L intake gaskets are prime examples.

What's worse is that I hear rumbings that GM's factory fix ("timeserts") for GM's factory screwup are known for sometimes pulling right of the block when torqued down.

I gather this has less to do with not using enough head bolts (hey, our beloved mopar blocks of 60s vin used not so many per cylinder) and more to do with using an open deck design, allowing the coolant to attack the headgasket all over the place.

Apparently the closed-deck northstars don't have the headbolt problem; go figure.

So, hey, if you're an insane masochist and like caddies, you can pickup northstar equipped caddies cheap, and roll the dice on having to fix the headbolt problem!  #P

I wonder ... someone should ask doug dutra or someone else who knows ... if the aluminum /6's had problems with headgaskets. They had open decks too:

Coincidentally, the reason /6s have such epic durability is apparently because they were originally specced for the aluminum of the day, and were never respecced down in dimensions when made in cast iron.  #P >:D }:)

Those are 6.2L supercharged, basically taken from the Corvette, and can be had with a six speed.

Out here there was a 2013 CTS-V Wagon SIX SPEED MANUAL with 100k miles in Black.  That's a rare car and a kick to drive I'm sure.  $39,999  The original sticker I'm sure was over $100k

QA does cost money.  Although going from a 14" tire to an 18" tire kinda means it is going to be more expensive.  And t hen we get into the tires designed specifically for a car, that makes it even more expensive.  I'll stick with my Falkens on the Focus, although the Jeep will get KM02's eventually, that is going to hurt lots.

10 years appears to be the absolute limit for tires, regardless of how nice they look.

https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/techpage.jsp?techid=11  <-- how to read date codes on tires.

IIRC from my copies of grassroots motorsports and ma, if you want to extend the life of your tires, keep them cool and OUT of the sun, even if you have to use tire covers.

Oddly, I have also heard bad things about using tire dressing and uber cleaners on tires, but that bears research and confirmation.

All true.

The other day I took an original 1972 tire and rim to America's Tire to have the valve stem replaced.  The looked at it and said "I can't touch it.  That tire is from 1982."  I laughed and told him it was from 1972.

So it looks like I will be buying my own tire machine.

anyone ever do a full tune up of a 4.7L V8 for the Ram?

I've got two mechanics giving me horror stories that inflate the price to several hundred bucks.  :(

Yes.  There is a video on Youtube how to do it.

But if you can do it in the first place do you really need a video on how to do it?

You know what I can't find on Youtube or ANYWHERE else?  How to take the damn headliner off my car so I can remove the sunroof shade/cover thing to reupholster it properly.  My frickin' Haynes Manual doesn't even mention my car might have a sunroof.

What kind of car is it? Most newer cars require speciality tools to remove the trim clips.

2001 Pontiac Bonneville SSEi.  With sunroof, obviously.  :D

I can't speak for your car specifically, but I had to drop the headliners in LOTS of cars to do 2 way radio installs for my old job.

Usually, you do it by removing the sunvisors, the grab handles, the center light, and the pinch-windlass(the plastic/rubber liner around the door openings) and often you also have to un-attach the covers over the pillars that hold up the roof. With a sunroof, you may have to remove a windlass around the sunroof opening and whatever may be attached below the headliner itself.

Essentially, it should just be a large shaped piece of cardboard with headliner material glued on. You may or may not be able to get the headliner out of the cab once you get it dropped.

Patience is a must, you'll probably need a selection of torx head screwdrivers; the plastic pillar covers usually seem to be held on with metal clips that push into slots in the pillar steel. Ie: you pull the pillar plastic VERY CAREFULLY and if the "gods" aren't angry with you, the clip should "pop" out of its slot OR it MAY come off the plastic - either way, be very careful when pulling them. Unless you got uber lucky and they attach with screws or one of the other types of plastic attachments used for those things (some you have to pull an insert out, etc.).

Essentially, you need to be curious and careful.

You know, like entering a dungeon in an old school rpg. Take a step, examine for traps. Take another step. Examine for traps.  ;)

Yea, pretty much what Pht said.

Here is a very generic video, it's for a Saturn but most of the techniques apply to what you are doing:

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=RKN13KVfWaI

Here is another video for a Buick LeSabre. A similar car to the one your working on. It's just not as well done as the first video.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=h8mWodZG-Jc

If you'll notice in the first video he uses this tool:

https://cdn2.tmbi.com/TFH/Step-By-Step/display/FH12MAY_PLARET_01.JPG

It's just a general clip removal tool you can get at most parts stores. There are better tools out there like these:

https://sep.yimg.com/ca/I/yourautotrim-store_2269_152556047

But they are way more expensive.  You can decide how much you want to spend.

Just remember that these videos are examples,  take your time. GM isn't as bad as Chrysler at this, but sometimes they mix clip types at the factory. So beware.  There may also be steps not covered in the videos, for example some Oldsmobiles have Velcro holding up their headliners where no other GM G type cars do.

As far as the sunroof cover goes I'm at a loss. I can't remember for the life of me how they worked on that car. Sorry. Most GM cars had a slide clip system, but I can't remember for sure on that type of car.

True. But nothing, and I do mean nothing is as bad as convertibles. Especially European convertibles. I still wake up screaming some nights.

I have owned three convertibles in my life

1969 Plymouth Sport Satellite
1970 Dodge Challenger
1970 Dodge Coronet 500

I don't think I owned any one of them more than 6 months.

A friend has been asking me to get one and I just can't bring myself to do it.
