Is it just me or did people just not do a lot of modification with the Reliable Grasshopper mech just before the Clan Invasion?  ???

I mean, it has lots of room to expand its weaponry or change considering it was one of the few alpha babies of the 3025 era.

So lets see what Arc-Royal MechWorks might have done in the 3040s to change up the old jumper.

The Grasshopper 5K Model is a rebuild of an old GHR-5H model of Grasshopper, with many of the weapons pulled for newly rediscovered Lostech. This turns the mech into an almost dedicated City-Fighter, with the mech maintaining its Standard Engine and jumpjet range, but the armor is as much Ferro as the chassis can take. The Large Laser, two of the medium lasers and the LRM-5 are gone. In their place a Large Pulse Laser, two medium pulse lasers, a SRM-4 pack and a Flamer ride alongside a full suite of fancy electronics to jam and find targets. CASE was added for the 1 ton of SRM ammunition (which, depending on the fancy of the pilot, could be for crit seeking or just setting everything on fire with Inferno ammo). 14 Freezers keep the mech cool in the middle of firing everything but it can drive the heat scale up if the pilot is not careful.

I wanted to set the thing in the 3040s, and TSM doesn't really get used until the 3050s when the Cappies figure the stuff out. The Primary reason I went with the Large Pulse Laser was, 1, it fits into the center torso, meaning if this is a refit of a stock 3025 'hopper, it can fit into the same place as the old Large Laser, 2, its got that really nice -2 to shooting. If this thing is jumping every round, that means an easier to hit number. Also, its in the center torso. You can blow off both side torsos and this thing will still have its main gun.

And if I had wanted TSM, I'd find a way to throw a Hatchet onto one of the arms just to really get the point across as a terrifying threat.

I did try to do an XL Engine version with dual Large Pulses but I decided it wasn't worth at cause at the end of the day the mech cost around 14 million c-bills and change...and I could just get two of the STD engine 'hoppers instead and double stomp on folks. The mech does have a weakness in that 10 hexes is your absolute max range, hence the idea that this is a Kell Hounds' refit built explicitly for Urban Combat testing. The electronics hide it and let you see beyond buildings, the flamer cooks any infantry, the SRMs crit-seek and the pulse lasers can help hit any fast movers you run into.

I mostly got this idea as I'm running a tabletop RPG/battletech game for friends every sunday and we have a happy Grasshopper pilot who does the whole bouncy back and forth with shooting and he's taken the least amount of damage. (I might have to post the results of that somewhere here...)

On C model, wouldn't a 15 rack w/3 ammo and 4 ML be more obtrusive  to a Rualmech.

It was just that I read somewhere about a mod to a Urbanmech and the poster called it a 'Ruralmech' as he had directly swapped the AC-10 for a LRM-20 and extra ammo, so I went the same way.

Designed in the Dark Age as both an experiment and to supplement the existing stock, the Nova Cat II is not really considered an upgrade over the original design.

The mech weighs the exact same 70 tons, moves at the same speed and carries the same amount of armor.

However, one big change is the fitting of A.E.S. in both arms, making them more accurate with shooting which Clan Sea Fox enjoys, even with the destruction of Clan Nova Cat.

The Prime model sports twin ER PPCs, twin ER Large Lasers and two micro pulse lasers. The loss of the third ER Large Laser is thought to be made up by the greater accuracy of the larger guns.

The Alpha model goes right back to quad ER Large Lasers, with the A.E.S. enhancing accuracy. However, two medium pulse (in the arms) and two micro pulse lasers (side torsos) are also fitted, giving it more flexibility.

Bravo...Bravo is not considered as threatening as the original Nova Cat design, as it has only 40 missile tubes compared to the originals 90. However, those 40 tubes are linked to Artemis V and the A.E.S. helps out as well. Six tons of ammo mean it is well supplied for combat. Two Medium Pulse and two small pulse round out the weapons and full ECM and Active Probe are fitted as well.

Charlie is a another take on Bravo, this time with two iATM-12s in the arms. Each fed from 3 ton bins the mech also sports a pair of heavy medium lasers, two medium pulse lasers and finally, JumpJets.

Delta is a Clan Rifleman, with twin LBX-5s (Fed from 3 tons of ammo), two ER Large Lasers and two Medium Pulse lasers. An ECM suite is also fitted.

Echo is a city fighter, with four Streak SRM-6 racks (Two per arm) along with two Plasma Cannons and two Medium Pulse Lasers. 2 tons of SRM ammunition and 2 tons of plastic 'charges' for the Plasma Cannons are carried, making this machine run light on the ammo. Echo also has JumpJets.

Hotel is the heavy laser boat, with an Improved Heavy Large Laser alongside two Improved Heavy Medium Lasers in the right arm. The left arm sports a HAG-20, fed from 3 tons of ammunition. An ECM suite and light active probe round it out. Also, all the weapons are wrapped in protective armor to guard against explosive detonations...

I wanted to set the thing in the 3040s, and TSM doesn't really get used until the 3050s when the Cappies figure the stuff out. The Primary reason I went with the Large Pulse Laser was, 1, it fits into the center torso, meaning if this is a refit of a stock 3025 'hopper, it can fit into the same place as the old Large Laser, 2, its got that really nice -2 to shooting. If this thing is jumping every round, that means an easier to hit number. Also, its in the center torso. You can blow off both side torsos and this thing will still have its main gun.

And if I had wanted TSM, I'd find a way to throw a Hatchet onto one of the arms just to really get the point across as a terrifying threat.

I did try to do an XL Engine version with dual Large Pulses but I decided it wasn't worth at cause at the end of the day the mech cost around 14 million c-bills and change...and I could just get two of the STD engine 'hoppers instead and double stomp on folks. The mech does have a weakness in that 10 hexes is your absolute max range, hence the idea that this is a Kell Hounds' refit built explicitly for Urban Combat testing. The electronics hide it and let you see beyond buildings, the flamer cooks any infantry, the SRMs crit-seek and the pulse lasers can help hit any fast movers you run into.

I mostly got this idea as I'm running a tabletop RPG/battletech game for friends every sunday and we have a happy Grasshopper pilot who does the whole bouncy back and forth with shooting and he's taken the least amount of damage. (I might have to post the results of that somewhere here...)

Yeah I do think there are some more that could ahve been done with the fun grasshopper.  I had something similar that had access to ECM, active probe, and had two ER large lasers in the arms for range.  It also used a snub nose PPC to give it a good hole puncher that can be used up close with some torso medium lasers.  It had a small pulse laser in the head but I think I should have gone with a flamer just for the fire breathing look lol.

Welcome to the wonderful world of bracket firing, as an Alpha Strike will shut you down with 40 overheat.

Instead of the artillery piece this monster packs the sawed off Long Tom for indirect fire to combine with the LRM-20 if you can get a spotter, along with its various weapons.

When in direct fire mode, you fire the 2 ER PPCs, the Gauss Rifle and the LRM-20. If up close, you smack em with the two Large Pulse Lasers, the SRM-6, or possible the Long Tom Cannon if you decide to not fire the SRM launcher.

The machine sports 600 points of armor, each arm has more armor than the center torso of an Atlas. You're gonna need it as its likely to soak up a lot of fire with its Urbanmech pack of 2/3. 21 Freezers keep the mech from overheating but beware infernos cause if you fail an ammunition roll you can be seen from orbit. And yeah, the price is a bit...high.  xp

So, Mad Cat Mk IV or Orca Mk2? I'll leave that to you to decide  ;D

The MRM-40 is blunt hammer of a weapon, but it is cheap to feed compared to the AC-20. Add the C3 slave helping the targeting systems by working in a group. And, surprisingly for a Hunchie, it has four jumpjets to let it bounce over buildings. FF Armor helps protect the mech.

A refit of the standard King Crab, this design was drawn up in the twilight of the Jihad for extended operations. Instead of the twin autocannons which had defined the mech for so long, instead it mounted a battery of old-school medium lasers similar to the Komodo, allowing it to potentially do more damage than both autocannons combined with its battery. The weight savings were put into a pair of long range guns for support in the form of an ER PPC (taking the place of the large laser) and a Gauss Rifle replacing the LRM-15. The Gauss is fed from 3 tons of slugs, giving it good endurance in the field. A flamer under the cockpit deals with infantry.

Unusually, the legs of the mech also sport Solaris style 'spikes' to protect them from melee attacks. Nineteen and a half tons of plate protect the mech and 18 freezers keep it cool...unless the Pilot Alpha Strikes.

An Urban Combat version of the Venerable Longbow mech, usually nicknamed "Shortbow" as its massive LRM racks have been replaced with two massive MRM-40 missile racks, allowing it to chuck 80 missiles down range and in an urban environment that can cause smash a mech to pieces with a single salvo. The inexpensive ammunition is also a benefit, as reloading the entire mech costs the same a single ton of LRM ammunition.

I like the Shortbow, but if it's an urban defense unit would it benefit more from an active probe of some sort instead of the ECM suite? The probe could let it find hidden units. Just a thought.

Here's a fun little idea I had. During the Dark Ages, after the fortress walls up the Republic Military had a handful of Celestial omnimech wrecks and decided to put them back into service. Only handful of each mechs were rebuilt as that was all the salvage was left after Stone had most of the former Word of Blake's arsenal.

The mere half-dozen of Archangel mechs recovered had their expensive and heavy compact Fusion engines wrecked so the republic techs replaced the engine with a standard Vox model taken from old Atlas mechs. To emulate the survivability of the original mech the engine was wrapped in six tons of armor plate, which when compared to the old Compact model saved three tons. That weight savings were poured into a standard cockpit and the C3i system was replaced by a boosted C3 slave.

The Deva series recovered were the most common mechs of the Celestial series that the republic managed to salvage. Unlike the original mech the design uses a regular Gyro that is armored and the C3i system is switched out for a boosted C3 slave. The weight savings are used to retrofit the cockpit.

The Preta refits are a little more involved as the mech doesn't really gain or lose that much pod space but it does radically have different movement as the engine has been downgraded but a supercharger has been fitted in a side torso. The armor, which on the original was at 94% coverage, has been increased to 99% on this version, which is not a lot already on a 45 ton mech.

The Seraph mech was redesigned into a command mech, sporting a full command console and boosted C3 Master to allow Republic forces to stay coordinated. While piloting these refit Word of Blake mechs was unpopular, they were still powerful and their reputations on the battlefield only added to the intimidation factor whenever these things appeared.

With the Republic's interest in drones, refitting some of these Celestials with drone cockpits might be interesting.

Edit: and this is the best weapon name I've ever seen.

With the Republic's interest in drones, refitting some of these Celestials with drone cockpits might be interesting.

The ECM system there is actually to help keep the C3 Slave unit working with the optional ECCM rules (Which I use a lot in MM). That lets the Shortbow use a C3 network to really get the most out of the rather odd range brackets of MRMs.

I thought Drone cockpits, like Robotic Cockpits, could only go onto Quad mechs? Or did they change that rule?

No, its not efficient, but 7 tons of modular armor does add considerable protection to the machine. Slowed down to 4/6 means it leans on its dual ER Large Lasers for long range combat. It mimics the older warhammer in many ways, but its electronics are now the Watchdog CEWS (Saving weight) and it does pack a targeting computer.

...so I remember reading about the King Crab and Kerensky wanted a mech that could knock out another mech with one salvo. And I admit, its hard to beat twin AC-20s.

So, Dual Arrow IVs replacing the AC-20s an the LRM-15. Four tons of ammo apiece. A snub-nose PPC for a backup gun and two ER Small Lasers cause I had tonnage left over. TAG to let you possibly guide your own missiles if you rock homing ammo.

Now it does use a Light Fusion engine, as honestly trying to fit anything else was a pain in the butt. Endo-Steel? Forget it with the twin AIVs eating 30 crits! So this girl is expensive to deploy at just under the twenty million mark. But man, firepower down range is crazy. Any BA squad is going to break into hives at the thought of trying to get close and it just decides to target hexes with non-homing ammo. Or if it TAGs you and chucks homing ammo down range. With maximum armor as well it won't fall over any time soon. The Snubbie is for making fast movers go away and two ER Smalls as I didn't have access to Micro-Pulse Lasers or the like.

That's right folks, 8 tons of targeting computer! I can hear the wince already :D

Twin ER PPCs and a Gauss Rifle make up the long range punch. 3 tons of slugs make sure the Gauss Rifle can take even risky shots for a bit too. Its got 19 tons of armor wrapping around the frame to protect it. Two medium lasers and a flamer round out the guns.

Its a massive beatstick and best of all, even in the super high-ECM world of the Jihad and early republic nothing can get turned off on it.

Ha! Nearly 4000BV! This is one EXPENSIVE puppy to deploy! All the weapons are swapped for Clan Models. The Flamer is completely replaced by a Clanner Plasma Cannon with 2 tons of plastic slugs to throw downrange. This gives it a nice amount of anti-infantry/vehicle damage if it needs it. The mech is fitted with more freezers as Clan models are much smaller. Finally, just to top things off, the mech has a Watchdog CEWS to cover finding targets are very close range. The mech uses a Clan XL Engine salvaged from a wrecked Dire Wolf to power it.

Trade out the dual autocannons for a single 6 tube iATM rack, which using ER missiles can hit 27 hexes and since its a Streak missile system they all hit or they don't fire. I like that. 3 Tons of ammo feed it which should be plenty, also gives you an option for the odd munitions the Society developed. A TarComp helps the Lasers (Which really are the main weapons of the mech anyways). The chassis uses Endo-Steel to free up the weight and its fitted with 15 laser heat-sinks so it runs cool at all times.

I'm pretty sure you can. Semi-guided LRMs from a TAG equipped Stalker or Longbow is something I could see the FWL doing.

The Clanner Second-line mech Onager is really 5 tons too heavy. At 90 tons the mech needs twenty tons of improved jump jets to jump five hexes. That's insane.

Now, at 85 tons, things change radically.

I fitted this 85 ton version to mirror the 90 ton. But instead of needing twenty tons of jumpjets, it only needs ten. That saves weight that can be put into other stuff. It gains an additional micro-pulse laser and both ECM and Active probe to help find hidden targets and to mess with enemy electronics.

The upgraded form swaps out pretty much everything.

Instead of the massive HAG-30, it instead sports triple Large Pulse Lasers in a similar mounting. The SRM-6 racks are replaced by Streak models, two ER Medium Lasers replacing the Medium Pulses and it mounts two small pulse lasers on the right arm to kill infantry. A light active probe is head mounted to help find targets. 17 freezers allow for jumping pulse laser goodness.
