Tweaking the Classic Thunderbolt!
« on: 04 July 2012, 08:48:04 »
There is an active thread where the OP asks the question:  what minor changes in your favorite 'Mech would you make?  Well, my favorite design of all time has always been the Thud:  the TDR-5S Thunderbolt.  Really there are only a few things wrong with this 'Mech:  a) it carries a full ton of MG ammo, b) it has LRM ammo in the center torso, and c) I really don't like SRM-2s!

But we can fix all of that!  First thing we do is cut that MG ammo to a half ton; to replace that missing tonnage we add a third Voelkers 200 MG.  Less ammo, and we burn through it 50% faster as well, and still have 33+ turns of fire; what more do you want?  Second thing is we remove the SRM-2 and ammunition, and move those LRM ammo bins to the right torso.  Okay, we've got 2 tons left.  Let's look at our heat:  Large Laser and LRM-15 generates 13 (8 + 5) for the long-range bracket, while three Medium Lasers generate 9 (3 + 3 + 3) for the short-range bracket.  We've got 15 heat sinks, so why not remove two, leaving thirteen.  That gives us just movement heat, which we can deal with, and gives us four tons to play with.  More than enough for a Holly SRM-6 launcher and a ton of ammunition, bringing our short-range to 13 (3 + 3 + 3 + 3), plus movement.  We put the Holly in the center torso to replace the space left by moving the LRM ammunition, and our SRM ammo joins the LRM-15 launcher/ammo in the right torso, packed with three heat sinks to give us a chance to soak up any critical hits.

We generate only movement heat in either bracket and our firepower has taken a substantial jump at short range:  from 23 (potential) to 33 (potential) and our crit seeking ability has increased dramatically (from 4 [2 MG; 2 SRM] to 9 [3 MG; 6 SRM]).  We didn't change the engine, internal structure, and do any major alterations; yet we have a 'Mech that is more effective and rather frightening!  In my game, this version (the TDR-5T) is the standard model produced by Taurus Territorial Industries on Taurus and Pinard in the Taurian Concordat!  This gives my version a home and provides the Taurians with their own variant model Thud.  It's a win-win!  And it uses no advanced tech, so it can be done in 3025-era games!

BV2 went up by a total of 15, whereas the price per unit grew by only 29,150 C-Bills.  She's a real bargain for any 'Merc who needs a jack-of-all trades heavy with something for every situation.  And armor.  Can't forget that wonderful thick armor!

Anyway, I hope that you like her.

Very nice, I would suggest moving the LRM15 to the LT also, that completely packs the LT c/s.

3ML, 3SHS, LRM15, 3 Ammo=12 c/s

I'd stay with twin MGs and drop half a ton of armor to get a 14th SHS - other than that it's pretty much my ideal T-bolt as well. :)

And once we get recovered tech in the 3050s, here is how I see the Taurians updating the Thud.  11.5 tons of ferro-fibrous replaces the 13 tons of standard armor; we lose all of 2 points of protection, but gain 1.5 tons.  We remove the MGs and ammo and the Holly SRM-6 pack.  The Large Laser gets updated to an ER Model.  Ten double heat sinks replace the thirteen singles, and TTI adds CASE to the right torso.  That leaves us with ten tons.  We spend seven on four Pinard Reaper Streak SRM-2 systems (two center torso and two right torso) and a ton of ammunition, and the final three are used for a triple mount of Diverse Optics Type 21 Small Pulse Lasers in the left arm.  Heat for the long range bracket is 17 (12 + 5), and the short-range bracket is 21 (3 + 3 + 3 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2) . . . if all four Streaks lock on and you are close enough to fire all three Small Pulse.  How likely is that?  Alternatively, you can use the ER Large and all three Medium Lasers for 21 heat (12 + 3 + 3 + 3) plus movement, which is quite good for 'Mechs used to 3025-levels of heat.

Total price increase of 523,050 C-Bills, but BV2 jumped by an additional +188.  She's still a bear.

You can get 14 SHS by using an SRM-4 instead of the SRM-6, which allows this Thud to stay cool while walking (running with the short range bracket).  If you really want to cut the armor by a half-ton, I'd actually add a FOURTH MG; increases the anti-infantry firepower to ludicrous levels and lets you burn through that MG ammo even faster.

That is a very useful trooper.

This is the way I would go with an SW-era T-bolt -> http://bg.battletech.com/forums/index.php/topic,5014.msg111621.html

Replace the LRM15/LL with a LRM10/PPC, replace the MGs & ammo with a flamer, and tack on an extra ML. I even costs a little less.

Cheers,

So what makes a Thunderbolt a Thunderbolt?  Is it the heavy armor?  The grinding ability to engage at different targets at all ranges?  The lack of ballistic weapons other than MGs?  What is it about the Thunderbolt that makes you grin and say, yeah, that's a Thud?  It is something that I have wondered for a while now:  while some of the latest T-Bolt designs are okay, too many of them just . . . aren't Thuds.  I mean, a TDR-7SE with a Gauss Rifle instead of missiles and big energy gun?  The TDR-9M with the Light Gauss?  The TDR-9NAIS with the RAC-5?

Those 'Mechs, to me, just don't feel like the Thuds I know and love.  I don't use them.  I don't want them.  To me, they are not Thunderbolts.  Just like those other 'modern' TDR designs that don't have missiles.  They are good (mostly) designs, but they ain't no Thunderbolt.

To answer my own question, I think to be a Thunderbolt, you need to have a big energy gun, a fairly large missile launcher, thick armor, and good secondary weapons.  What about you?  What sort of fuzzy warm feeling do you get with you think Thud?

How about a baby Thunderbolt for those medium-'Mech drivers out there?  You know the ones who want a Thud, but are still paying off their student loans and can't afford one yet.   >:D

TRN-1D Tornado

Overview:

The creation and production of the TRN-1D Tornado was a fortuitous mistake that led first to the criminal trial of its creator and then to the adoption of the new BattleMech by the Taurian Defense Force!  It began in 2998, when Major Tim Davis was reassigned as the head of a team of internal analysts for the Office of the Inspector General for the TDF's Administration Division.  A mathematical wizard and borderline genius, Davis had served for over sixteen years without a single blemish on his service records.  But he found that his new position generated far too much spare time; and Major Davis was one of those who got bored rather easily.

However, unlike most people in such positions, who would search for on-line pornography or relieve the tedium with games of chance played against total strangers, Tim Davis decided to design a 'Mech.  He did his research and he sent our 'response required' questionaires to serving and retired TDF officers to find out what they wanted in a BattleMech.  Two months after receiving the first batch of replies, he sketched out his initial ideas for Project LITTLE BROTHER.

That would have garnered him a commendation for initiative and good thinking, but Davis still considered this design his private pet project.  He turned his intellect towards volumes on design engineering, and shot off e-mails and HPG tranmissions to Taurus Territorial, Pinard Protectorates, and Vandenberg Mechanized Industries, asking for offical evaluations and suggestions on specific elements of his design.  And meanwhile the files on LITTLE BROTHER keep on growing and growing.

Late in 3002, the Inspector General discovered exactly what Major Davis had been playing at; and in the wake of three seperate scandals involving the misuse of government funds, he recommended that the Major stand a court-martial for his diversion of Taurian monies into a private-obession with something that everyone knew would never be more than a pipe dream.

But, in court, when the prosecution called upon engineers from TTI, PPL, and VMI to dismiss Davis' design, the court was shocked at the acknowledgement by these engineers that the design schematics and plans were complete . . . and ready for immediate prototype production, with an estimated price tag two million C-bills less than a TDR-5S Thunderbolt.  Declaring a recess, the court officers confered with the engineers and the Protector, and three days later, all charges against Colonel Davis were dismissed and the Big Three manufacturers began to work together on making LITTLE BROTHER a reality.

Six months later, the first TRN-1D Tornado walked out of the Taurus Territorial Industries factory on Taurus under its own power.

Capabilities:

Massing 50 tons, the Tornado is a near copy of the 65-ton TDR-5S Thunderbolt.  Nicknamed as the Little Brother, this 'Mech carries almost the exact same armament as the older and heavier design, lacking only 5 long-range missile tubes and carrying one additional machine-gun.  Both 'Mechs are capable of the same maximum speeds, both have near maximum armor for their weight classes (although the Tornado does carry two and a half-tons less than the Thunderbolt, due to its smaller size).  Both designs are also easily able to handle their heat load through proper bracketing of weapon systems.

The commonality of many components have assured the TDF that this new 'Mech will be easy to maintain.

Deployment:

The Tornado has been an unabashed hit amongst the soldiers of the TDF.  It is a solidly capable, hard-working medium, that can punch well above its weight class, and few other 'Mechs (regardless of weight) carry anywhere near the same percentage of armor protection.  Today, the Tornado serves in nearly all Regiments of the TDF, and despite being produced in three different facilities, there is a six month back-log on export orders for mercenaries.  Rumors abound that TTI is considering opening a new factory complex on Samantha to produce Tornados for export only.

I like the -5SF, the -5SG, and -5SM.  Nothing against your -5F, but autocannons on a Thud just feels wrong to me.

Well done, though, LCC.

And along the lines of the Tornado, here is a repost of my take on a Taurian pocket T-bolt (albeit with rearrange weapons):

Gaucho GMB-1T

Mass: 50 tons
Tech Base: Inner Sphere
Chassis Config: Biped
Rules Level: Introductory
Era: Succession Wars
Tech Rating/Era Availability: D/X-E-D
Production Year: 3028
Cost: 3,382,750 C-Bills
Battle Value: 1,092

Chassis: Earthwerk TDR-II Standard
Power Plant: Nissan 200 Fusion Engine
Walking Speed: 43.2 km/h
Maximum Speed: 64.8 km/h
Jump Jets: None
    Jump Capacity: 0 meters
Armor: Durallex Heavy Standard Armor
Armament:
1 Sunglow Type 2 Large Laser
4 Diverse Optics Type 18 Medium Lasers
    3 Delta Dart LRM-5s
    1 Hotshot Flamer
Manufacturer: Vandenburg Mechanized Industires
    Primary Factory: New Vandenburg
Communications System: Neil 6000
Targeting and Tracking System: RCA Instatrac Mark VIII

Overview:
During the waning years of the Succession Wars, the Taurian Cordordat's ability
to produced battlemechs had waned to just a scattering of of light and medium
units every year. Heavier units were all rebuilds or factory refits of salvaged
materials. Feeling pressure from the resurgent Suns and pirate activities
throughout the region, the Protector comissioned VMI to produce a medium mech
that could stand up to heavier units. Modeled on the iconic Thunderbolt, VMI's
Gaucho filled the role admirably with the equipment available at the time.
Unnoticed in the Inner Sphere amid the fanfare of the 3rd Succession War and
the unveiling of radical new units like the Raven and Hachetman, the Gaucho was
one of the first new mech designs to enter production in centuries - a source
of no small amount of Taurian Pride.

Variants:
The GMB-2T is a production variant that appeared in the early 3060s utilizing
recovered technology. The Gaucho-2T upgrades the cooling system with 12 double
strength heat sinks, which help compesate for the heat from the ER PPC that
replaced the 1T's large laser. The armor is also upgraded with locally produced
ferro-fibrous composites, freeing up the mass required to install CASE for both
of the LRM ammo bins.

I like that.  The use of the LRM-5s does seem more Taurian (their Toro and Telos both used 5-packs) and it did you a bit more space (6 tons vs. 7 for a 15-pack).  Nice!
