Design Prompt: Battle Royale

There was a recent discussion on the Battletech subreddit about a game mode where a whole bunch of players bring one mech each and play a battle royale, with the last man standing as the winner. I thought it was kind of cool, and came up with some rules for doing it with custom mechs. Figured it might make a good design prompt.

Every player starts with a 50-ton weight cap, a 4/5 pilot, and a 3050-era Inner Sphere technology base. Players also get 10 improvement points to spend on customization.
  • -1 gunnery = 2 points each
  • -1 piloting = 1 point each
  • +1 initiative = 1 point each
  • +5 ton max size = 1 point each
  • IS 3025 tech level = -4 points
  • IS 3080 tech level = 3 points
  • IS 3150 tech level = 4 points
  • Clan 3050 tech level = 5 points
  • Clan 3150 tech level = 6 points
  • Mixed tech 3150 tech level (i.e., any legal mech design) = 7 points.

They're slightly modified from the original, but these seem pretty reasonable. Using these point values, come up with a mech designed to be the last man standing.

Looking at those numbers (IS 80 tonner of 3025) we could get any of the following.

Zeus

Also the Victor or Charger, but I do not fancy those.
Not a bad selection. I thik I would chose the Hatamoto Chi Here, with the twin PPC, and 2 SRM6.
However, I might decide to go fo a smaller mech with a higher initiative and try to stay out of the fight and ignored for a long time before joining the brawl in order to avoid some of the attention that big guys attract.

Another option would be to play the long range gamme, with a griffin 1N: IS 3025 tech, 55 tons, +8 initiative, +2 gunnery, +1 piloting. Not a bad guy.

The problem with last man standing is that hiding tends to be the best strategy. :(

Fair point. Assume a comparatively small field - maybe one mapsheet for every two players, with fairly open terrain(e.g., a 32x34 map with 8 players). This should look more like a Royal Rumble than the Hunger Games.

I'm not actually trying to run this as a game, but if I were, I'd probably say that you can only win if you're in the top half of the field in terms of total damage inflicted. Of those units, the winner is the one who stays alive longest. Should be fairly easy to meet that criteria if you're playing actively (since the lowest damage will usually be the ones who die early, so most units that are playing for a long time will score highly), but if you just run and hide then you won't get enough damage to matter.

Actually, you know what? I might try to put these units together into a MegaMek game, and let the bot fight them out. Not sure if it can support a game like that, but if it can, it might be fun to see the results.

Finally got done making my very own custom mech.  5 points spent for Clan 3050 tech, 5 points spent on increasing weight.

Absolute pinnacle of creativity here, if I do say so myself.  Should function as a good measuring stick.

So let's throw out a few ideas here.

The Gryphon (which is like a Griffin, but cooler) is one's a more defensive model than most, but not inordinately so. Ferro-lamellor is the headliner on this unit, with a LAMS for added defensiveness, and good mobility to keep itself alive. Two big can-opener energy weapons, and a swarm of critseekers to exploit it all. There's heat problems if you use it poorly, which is another reason for the jump jets (overheating with an alpha and flying away is a viable strategy on occasion), but it should be manageable.
 
- 6 points for Clan 3150(mostly to get ferro-lamellor, though the IHLL also comes from that too).
- 1 point to go up to 55 tons.
- 3 points to use a 3/4 pilot.

This one's the biggest slab of weapons and armour that the rules allow. It's not much more unique than Gigastrike's entry, but it's one natural end of the design space to explore. Because it's fairly slow it focuses a lot on weaponry with a lot of flexibility in its range, but it has a few MLs to bracket. And because TSM is effectively free (it doesn't have the slots for Endo Steel or the like, and TSM is weightless), I threw it in for a lark. (And a 40-point kick. And for the mobility to be a bit less terrible.) The bracket-y weapons give you immense flexibility in heat management, to trigger, maintain, or abandon TSM as desired.

The above mech showed me that 3050 tech is surprisingly unbalanced, with a lot fewer of the goodies that I'm used to than I expected. So let's do something similar, but with 3080 tech. That caps us at 85 tons, but that's a more practical size for JJs to give us a bit more mobility. (I considered IJJs, but those seven tons feel too expensive). Based on the theory that not dying is important, it's slathered in hardened armour, which has unfortunate impacts on its weapons load, but it's still a total brick. It does at least carry enough ammo for a really long fight, including Swarm LRMs (which are hilariously good in this mode).

Good news is the lab boys say the symptoms of asbestos poisoning show an immediate latency of 44.6 years. So if you're thirty or over you're laughing. Worst case scenario you miss out on a few rounds of canasta, plus you've forwarded the cause of science by three centuries. I punch those numbers into my calculator, it makes a happy face.

TBH, I've never played with those rules or even looked at them seriously, so I don't have any strong views on them. What are you looking to do? (Where are the relevant rules even located?)

You can still do damage while trying to avoid danger in a battle royal setting...

Fast, chameleon, 25 range threat (that is heat neutral and with targeting computer)
Sure I can only only spend 3 points upgrading the pilot, but with interface cockpit bonuses and the TC as well as extreme range 20 damage shots, compared against what should be +6 hit modifiers striking the Ferro-Lamellor armor it should trade quite well.

Sure I can only only spend 3 points upgrading the pilot, but with interface cockpit bonuses and the TC as well as extreme range 20 damage shots, compared against what should be +6 hit modifiers striking the Ferro-Lamellor armor it should trade quite well.

Yea probably,
I tried to build something sort of around the same concept but more interesting to play and more scary to be shot by. Probably not as good if only because it is worse at staying safe, but probably something one would be slightly less hated if it was used. Features some more interesting heat management with turning null signature on and of and some capacitor juggling. (with the extra equipment allowing you to ride the heat curve quite hard for short periods of time.)
