A nuke.

If a nuke is unavailable, orbital bombardment.

If friendly warships are not nearby, artillery or aerial dive bombing should be considered.

If infantry is within direct fire range, plasma-based weaponry, LRMs with the proper munitions, and artillery cannons make for good solutions.

If all else fails, MGs, Pulse Lasers, AP Gauss Rifles, and SRMs with the proper munitions may help quickly clear any infantry that you accidentally let get into firing range.

Without destroying the city you want to capture? Infantry.

..or dependent wives...that will render them powerless...and want to move into family housing.

i'm a fan of the ap gauss or infernos as they generally outrange what you're shooting at.

It depends. What do you need actually?

Anything with area effect or fire effects can dispatch the infantries at ease. If all you need is something to killing a bunch of CIs, just using some Mech Mortar-8s with Airburst rounds. Average 28 damage to a CI unit ignoring infantry/terrain advantage save for shields of the building makes them terrified. If you can get more, a Long Tom Cannon loaded with Fuel-Air ammunition will solve most problems with only one shot.

A TAG is also a good weapon. Only three Thumper copperhead rounds guided by TAG pointing the ground can eliminate most squads at ease.

If you don't want bloodshed, try Tear Gas SRM/LRM/MML instead.

Effective & cheap = Flamer

Useful for not taking return fire.  =  LRM Specialty ammo & or Artillery.

But if your not trying to destroy the city they are hiding in.
Then MG,  or Light MG if available.
Honorable Mention for Streak SRMs for not hitting surrounding area w/ missed shots.

Anything else is just asking to destroy the surrounding area and I'm not into mass murder of civilians.  It makes you look bad in front of those Review Boards.

Don't go into a city fight with high expectations for your machine guns unless your enemies leave the buildings and fight you from out in the open. If you're outside a building and the infantry is inside, there is no burst damage, only basic ballistic. If the infantry are in a building that's heavier than Medium, you must have heavy machine guns or bigger to do anything at all. If you enter the building, you at least get 1/2 of your burst-fire damage, but then you're inside a building full of hostile infantry, a problem in its own right.

Agreed there!

MAZ-Bey mentioned sending infantry in above & I agree, when it comes to getting them out of a building you either use your own infantry or you level the city because dropping the building on them in 1 turn of fire is a great way to wipe them out, but again, not something you want on your resume.

But if they are a building I'm not sure anything is actually "Good" for killing them w/o pasting the building in the process.

Honestly, if at all possible I just go around the building since they probably don't have much range.
But now we are talking tactics which is probably a bit off topic.

What are the mission goals, just kill them? Are there any other considerations?
Sometimes leveling a town or even a building may not be feasible.
If you don't have a warship or nukes handy, those options are off the table. If you are running on a slim budget a battery of Long Toms might not be available and if you are low-tech, stuff like infernos are also crossed off the list of options.

If time is no issue, surround them and starve them out, cut off water and power and they will eventually surrender once their supplies run out...If I allow them to surrender.
Any civilians in the area are given time to evacuate, anybody left is declared a combatant, hostage, or human shield, and I don't negotiate with terrorists after I allow them to surrender.
I have no qualms about using chemical weapons on lower-tech troops who lack adequate protection or training -They shouldn't have picked a fight with adults.

I like small pulse lasers for the job - especially the longer ranged versions like the Clan or X pulse model.  The pulse bonus really helps you engage infantry from a useful distance.

I fell out of favour with heaven somewhere, so I'm here for the hell of it now...

Mech mounted direct fire.

And against what infantry? CI, BA, or both? Also on which situation? Are you only need to deal with the infantry above anything else, or what you need is just a small self-defense weapon against the ambushing infantry?

Then, just use some TAG and deal with all of them by a barrage of 5-damage Copperhead. Because you can aim TAG on the ground, rather than the enemy themselves, you are unlikely to miss and you don't let the infantry to do something either.

Arrow IV with fuel air ammo . 20/10/5 against mechs and vehicles the overpressure has a chance of killing all infantry in a 9 hex radius. or a unit with 2 mech mortar 8s  . 2 airburst shots do 4d6 infantry damage each average is 28 equaling a standard platoon .  Nukes is too expensive and dirty .Mech Mortars is the best choice with the least collateral damage
