Bases?
« on: 30 August 2016, 23:25:31 »
1st post on the forum. I was just wondering, do the IWM mechs come with bases, or do they have to be purchased separately?

Most older sculpts come with an oval style base which then can be mounted into/onto a hex base.

Some newer sculpts (generally one piece minis) come with a half hex-sided base which some people prefer to the full-sized hex base as you can see the terrain information on the hex without having to pick up the mini. You can also mount these onto a full hex base.

Other newer sculpt (generally the more elaborate multi-piece minis) do not have a base at all and can be mounted directly onto a hex base.

If you want the full sized hex bases then you will need to buy them separately.

Minis with the oval bases? I'd still put a hex base under them. It helps a TON when it comes to keeping things standing (and thus unbroken) in case of an errant shirt sleeve or evil cat.

Also, for larger miniatures (such as the Seraph or Malice) I strongly suggest not wasting time on the standard Battletech base, and skipping straight to the IWM 30mm or 32mm base. I frequently put 32mm bases on minis, and it's a huge help- the base isn't a ridiculous amount larger by footprint than before, but without the sloping 'lip' anymore there's a lot more room to fit big feet and still have room for basing material.

Oh- and welcome to the forums!

Thanks for the responses, guys. I went ahead and ordered some bases from a different source, seeing that my order with IWM is currently processing.

Don't you dare get those things built without sharing some pictures when you're done!  }:)

I plan on it! I'm just getting into Battletech, and I have love the setting already. I wouldn't have paid much mind to it if a gentlemen from Catalyst hadn't been demoing Alpha Strike at a small con I went to.

It's a good setting, for sure. Glad to have you aboard! (Now go buy a Thor!)
