Definitive Blue Blister Sculptor Information
« on: 20 September 2019, 10:18:18 »
I'm collating a list of the sculptors of various early Battledroids/BattleTech miniatures.  By definitive, I mean the sculptors name appears on the blister pack, usually the Blue Ral Partha one.

Specifically, I'm look for the sculptor information for the following Ral Partha models (you may also message me).

10.   20-814 Fire Bee (Battledroids sculpt)
19.   20-838 Battlemaster (Battledroids sculpt)
19.   20-838 Battlemaster (2nd Generation version- Blue Blister)
26.   20-806 Hunter Missile Tank (2)
34.   20-848 Orion
40.   20-854 Hunchback
56.   20-870 Whitworth
61.   20-875 Assassin

Sculptor's name should be either on the packing or on the bottom of the mini's base. Does this help?

Thank you.  I'll share my own findings once I've got them where I think they should be.

I have the BD Cestus as 20-814, the Firebee as 20-804. No sculptors for either of them plus the BD Battlemaster and BD Hunter Tank. Their packaging didn't list sculptors, as far as I'm aware. I'll have to check the bases on what I can, later.

For now...

20-806 Hunter Missile Tank, 2nd sculpt = Tom Meier
20-838 Battlemaster, 2nd sculpt = Julie Guthrie
20-848 Orion = Tom Meier
20-854 Hunchback = Tom Meier
20-870 Whitworth = Julie Guthrie
20-875 Assassin, 1st sculpt = Robert Charrette

Extremely helpful, thank you.

Do you know if the Battledroids sculpts have the artist information on the base?  I do not own any to check.

Wait—is this the same Robert Charrette who wrote Wolf Pack?

Same guy. Unfortunately his website is no longer in existence, but he did a lot of the unseen miniatures.

Here is a link to his archived site on Archive.org: https://web.archive.org/web/20071019001949/http://www.charrette.parroom.net/Minigallery.html

Multi-talented guy. He did the art on the first four issues of BattleTechnology as well. [brain fart]

I consider this a definitive list. An "*" denotes the "recycling" of a previously existing model number.  Feel free to offer corrections but you better have an image of a Blue Blister to back it up ;). This list begins with the original Ral Partha Battledroids sculpts and continues on through the introduction of the first 16 Clan OmniMechs.  Ral Partha switched from lead to "Ralidium" at this point and began cycling through TRO: 3055 and parts beyond.  I did not include Aerospace fighters or the "MechWarrior" series of miniatures.  Note that a number of the "Unseen" sculpts underwent significant revision with the introduction of the "BattleTech Box Sets" circa 1988 although their model number remained unchanged.

Man, this needs to go up on Sarna. We're mostly fluff experts - the miniatures and CCG aspects of BattleTech are sadly somewhat neglected on Sarna, because we seem to lack dedicated experts on these fields.

I agree.  Most of what I've learned about the early Battledroids / BattleMech miniatures was through my own research and the generous help of many others, including some primary sources ;)  In fact, I was surprised how little has been documented to date (at least from what I was able to find) regarding the early Ral Partha miniatures.  I have a working draft of an identification guide that highlights the differences between those early sculpts that underwent significant revisions, in some cases two or three times during the first few years of the franchise.  With some time and luck, I may be able to get into a shape that wouldn't be embarrassing to share.

It's such a big project. I'm still unsure how to go about it. Plus, wiki tables scare me.

This will get you started. Create a page and paste the following CODE block into it.

Limitations:
* I had to remove the asterisks because they were messing up my table formatting.
* Removed parenthesis because they're not needed in the table.
* 'Mech names aren't formatted (they should be italic).
* Nothing's linked
* Didn't spend any time addressing multi-mini blister packs (vehicles, infantry, etc.) in the table. Should they get their own column?

Be the Loremaster:

Battletech transport rules take a very feline approach to moving troops in a combat zone: If they fits, they ships.

You bought the box set and are ready to expand your BT experience. Now what? (Thanks Sartis!)

A long term goal I have wanted to do is get this kind of information up for Battletech and then other Minis on the IWM store. After the move to the new online store, I want to get sculptor info added to BT minis that are available now.  Then a list for the OOP / old sculpts that had a minor change at some point.

I will have to check my notes from what Jacob told me, but he did ID what mech was Mastered first of the Battledroids.

I'm still working on verifying the sculptors of the early Unseen "Battledroids" miniatures.  I believe Dennis Mize may have down both the Shadow Hawk and Griffin "Battledroid."  I will try and verify that today, especially since his name does not appear on any blue blister I have ever seen.

In addition, maybe you would have better luck that I trying to contact Gregory Dean Scott, the founder of GHQ Miniatures.  My repeated inquiries have gone unanswered.  I have a source that says a GHQ Micro Armor sculptor did the initial Marauder, and possibly the initial Warhammer sculpt as well, on behalf of Ral Partha in the mid 80's.  Robert Charrette did the subsequent sculpt.

I can confirm he did the BD Griffin, Mike has the original green in his office that he got after Dennis Mize passed away.

Doesn't get any more definitive than that.  Dennis Mize did the Battledroid sculpt of both the Shadow Hawk and Griffin.
At some point, I will collate what sculptor information I have on the early Battledroids / Orange Blister stuff.  I found out today that GHQ also did the Battledroids Rifleman sculpt, giving them at least three of the early first generation sculpts.  Man, I'd love to track that name(s) down from GHQ!

Ral Partha cranked out early versions of the 'Mechs featured in the Battledroids/BattleTech Second Edition box set.  Many of these sculpts would be superseded by later versions.  Identifying these sculpts and determining who created them remains a work in progress.  This is my working list of 'Mechs that had a "Battledroids" version and who sculpted them.

    LCT-1V Locust (R. Charrette)
    STG-3R Stinger (R. Charrette)
    WSP-1A Wasp (R. Charrette)
    GRF-1N Griffin (D.Mize)
    SHD-2H Shadow Hawk (D. Mize)
    WVR-6R Wolverine (J. Guthrie)
    RFL-3N Rifleman (GHQ Micro Armor)
    ARC-2R Archer (J. Guthrie)
    WHM-6R Warhammer (GHQ Micro Armor)
    MAD-3R Marauder (GHQ Micro Armor)
    BLR-1G Battlemaster (J. Guthrie)

Phoenix Hawk, Crusader, and Thunderbolt have only a single sculpt that I am aware of.

As a side note, I believe the following vehicles also have "Battledroids" versions but I have not spent much time tracing them down.

Hunter - Vehicle
Striker - Vehicle
Pegasus - Vehicle
Vedette - Vehicle
Demolisher - Vehicle

Any additional information, or thoughts, are welcome.

You are correct regarding these Mechs and vehicles.
