Nice. Thought I think the market for underarmored 60-ton 3/5 weapon carriers might be a bit heavily contested...

Maybe keep it at 4/6 to make it stand out?
Thanks, I did think about that but these are not supposed to represent manufactured weapons carriers, but rather field conversions on the preexisting Utility Track that I posted at the top of the massive pile of carriers. Think of it this way: You have a load of spare parts and your conventional forces are getting mullered/the enemy attacked at a vulnerable point. So you take these guns/launchers/etc and strap them onto the first available chassis capable of carrying them, in this case the Utility Track, to create a desperate last-ditch Technical.

Not the most popular tank in the DCMS the T14 is mostly known for its popgun armament, a somewhat unfair characterization thought technically true. The medium AC fits better on a light tank than a heavy MBT, but the missile armament makes up for it.

The true reason most crews dislike the tank is the lack of close-in defense. In theory this should be countered by positioning multiple vehicles with overlapping firing arcs but in practice this often fails. To provide an easier to use close-in defense the T14S version was developed which simply replaces the LRM racks with twin SRM6 racks.

The A40 was originally designed to take (illegally) copied Scimitar turrets to quickly produce new AFVs for the CC military. The name - Crusader - was even chosen to show its enmity. The story could have ended there with a snarl of lawsuits and some production for miltias.

But Scarburough found that there was significant interest in the vehicle amongst their legal customers as well and decided to one-up the copiers by licencing a mostly identical design to producers in the DC and later other states.

A solid if uninspired second-line design the A40 only have one real weakness, its limited short-range and anti-infantry armament. As the front-mounted LRM is easily replaced a common variant features two more SRM2s and an MG in its place.

The Nashorn started out as a FWL attempt to copy the Tapir assault vehicle, which soon turned into a new project to produce a more practical assault infantry carrier. The Nashorn avoids the Tapir's wheeled suspension for tracks and replaces the twin heavy ACs with a single superheavy cannon and a light LRM battery to make up for the lost range.

Thought never produced in large numbers it has shown up in CC formations, and a few units have been captured and fielded by the LC and FS.

Originally designed as a competitor to the Von Luckner the Thundercloud never really caught on. But to compensate for the losses of the succession wars production started up in the DC in the early 2900s.

But the producer ended up struggling for funds as the DCMS found heavy tanks a low priority. In desperation a black market deal was struck were several loads of tanks were "lost" to LC radiers, making the tank almost as common in LC units.

Really just an upgunned heavy tracked APC the Husky has sold mostly based on quality, an unusual selling point for a budget AFV. Its FWL producer has made a point of using dependable subsystems and strict manufacturing standards which has resulted in the Husky being widely exported. Thought far from the most common IFV it can be found in most armies.

Originally designed for SLDF militia units the Smasher was never very popular, owing to its slow speed, limited ammunition, and relatively light armor. Used mostly to support static defenses many were destroyed during the Amaris coup.

Very few units survived past SW2. But in the wake of their massive losses the AFFS decided to restart production. The tanks have then spread to the DC, CC, as well as perphery nations.

Would be a reasonable SW3 variant. The original was designed to counter mechs with the assumption it would be supported by its own infantry.

A bit close to the heavy APC(SRM). It would be more effective, but a laser gives it a bit of character (and some very marginal holepunching to support the PBI's critseeking. ;) ).

With the Smasher, Have you considered replacing the AC/10 with a Large Laser?  This would save you 1 ton to either armor up OR get specialist SRM rounds for dealing with non-Mech targets.
Saying that because the equipment isn't up-to-the-minute, bleeding-edge tech therefore not a threat is like saying an M2 Browning isn't dangerous to modern infantry because it is 100 years old.

Eh?  I get 13 total tons for the Large Laser (5 for the weapon, 8 for heat sinks).  The AC/10 only has one ton of ammo, so that's also 13 tons...  ???

You are right, With only 10 rounds this offers no weight reduction.

Turret weight reduction.
Also don't forget the Power Amplifier.

The Smasher's pretty much a tracked Urbie, so more than 10 rounds for the gun is a bit excessive (thought the crews that run out probably has a different opinion!). Replacing a 20-shot AC/10 with a LL to get better endurance (and save a little weight) makes more sense. Look upthread for the Matilda infantry tank, a sensible use of a LL IMHO.

Designed as a replacement for the Tiger MBT the Tigershark failed abysmally. While the increased armor and missile armament was very welcome the hullmounted main gun and lack of anti-infantry weapons doomed it.

However the pounding the AFFS suffered at the hands of the DCMS early in the SWs meant that production was started anyway. In defensive useage the Tigershark actually did okay, well enough that captured factories were looted by the DCMS to start production on the other side of the border.

I like to play with this 65 ton. I created it the 90's and it is still one of my favorite designs:

Code: [Select]
Sultan MkI
Mass: 65 tons
Movement Type: Tracked
Power Plant: 195 ICE
Cruising Speed: 32.4 kph
Maximum Speed: 54 kph
Armor: Standard
Armament:
     2 AC/10
Communication System: Unknown
Targeting & Tracking System: Unknown
Introduction Year: 2750
Tech Rating/Availability: E/C-D-D-D
Cost: 1,380,638 C-bills

Overview
The Sultan is a low-cost heavy tank with excellent firepower and good armor protection. Compared to other heavy tanks like the Patton or the Manticore, it costs about one-half for a similar or better firepower, equivalent defense and slightly inferior speed and mobility.

Capabilities
Instead of a variety of multi-range weapons, the Sultan is armed only with two Autocannons class 10. They provide heavy firepower with long range and allow accurate shooting from beyond the short range of SRMs and other light weapons. The option for an ICE conventional engine sacrificed its speed, restricting its use to defensive or assault missions. It also depends on other units for longer range fire support and point-blank defense against infantry, however it proved to be a very effective tank against BattleMechs of any class.

Deployment
The Sultan were organized in dedicated lances of four tanks, operating in close formation for mutual support. These lances were often also followed by other combat vehicles, specially the Marder Infantry Fighting Vehicles and LRM-carrier VTOLs (Wildcats or Hellcats)

History
Few variants were created. Sone users prefer to reduce one ton of AC/10 ammo and add a Machine Gun in the turret with 0.5ton of ammo.

Pocket Zhukov. :) Not a bad idea, the Zhukov's SRM6 has always felt a bit superfluous to me.

You might want to check the formatting, thought...

When I designed it (circa 1992-94), the Zhukov was not released. It is similar but 10tons heavier and 50% more expensive in c-bills. It is too much for just a SRM-6 fixed in the front arc.

You can compare it with the Po I also. For a small reduction in speed (4/6 to 3/5) you double the firepower for just 5ton more.

I use it a lot as a defensive asset and as sidekicks for mechs. The AC/10 is very versatile with good range and damage.

I have a few designs hosted in my website, including this one:

Another less-than-brilliant heavy tank design the Hussite (named for ancient war wagon users) is a LC design built to a specification requiring far more offensive capability than could actually be carried on a well-armored tracked chassis. The result was essentially a way oversized armored car with all the vulnerabilities this caused.

However the LCAF ended up buying enough of the vehicles that many frontier garrisons had at least a lance. This in turn meant that captured vehicles spread to both the DC and FWL. This was helped by the fact that while the tank is a questionable MBT it is relatively cheap and unusually easy to maintain.

I figured that the Quickscell Company would have some kind of medium tank; after all, if there's a market then Quickscell is there.

Code: [Select]
Vambrace Medium Tank

Mass: 45 tons
Movement Type: Tracked
Power Plant: InterComBust 180
Cruising Speed: 43.2 kph
Maximum Speed: 64.8 kph
Armor: ProtecTech Light
Armament:
1 20mm Gatling Gun Machine Gun
     1 Deleon/5 AC/5
     1 Hovertec SRM 2
     1 LongFire/L LRM 5
Manufacturer: Quickscell Company
     Primary Factory: Richvale
Communication System: Basix 250
Targeting & Tracking System: OptiSight 12
Introduction Year: 3025
Tech Rating/Availability: E/X-E-D-D
Cost: 737,325 C-bills

Overview
The Vambrace Medium Tank was seen as something of a
high-end tank, at least as far as the Quickscell Company was
concerned.   The tank was the brainchild of the Richvale facility
in the Lyran Commonwealth and was intended to meet Lyran
needs for a general-purpose medium tank that was both flexible
and affordable.   Like the smaller vehicles offered by Quickscell,
the Vambrace was intended to be sold in large numbers to make
up for its mediocre speed and armor.   The tank was soon
exported to other Quickscell facilities across the Inner Sphere
due to its low cost.

Capabilities
While the Vambrace is not a flashy tank, it is designed to be
able to meet multiple mission requirements.   While it does not
excel at anything, the Vambrace acts as a jack-of-all-trades, but
is by no means a master of any of them.   An individual Vambrace
lacks the firepower to engage anything much heavier than itself,
though it has a number of light weapon systems with which to
engage targets at long and medium ranges.

The weapon systems of the Vambrace are a mixed bag at best.
The lightweight Deleon autocannon has long had known issues with
tracking a target within 30 meters, while the low cost of the weapon
has made correcting these problems a minimal priority.   The new
LongFire/L long-range missiles have been shown to have arming
problems, needing at least 60 meters for the warhead to arm itself.
The Hovertec SRM launcher, on the other hand, is a long-proven
vehicular weapon system and is reliable at short ranges.   Loaded
with Inferno rounds, the Hovertec is a threat to both light armored
vehicles as well as some 'Mechs.   The 20mm Gatling Gun provides
equally reliable point-blank firepower against unarmored infantry,
but lacks any kind of anti-vehicle usefulness due to its low-velocity
round.

The relatively spacious turret of the tank has made the vehicle
easy to maintain and modify, making up somewhat for the weapon
systems.   The notoriously poor quality control of the Quickscell
company, found on many of their products, also plagues the Vambrace.
The breakdown rate of the simple powerplant, along with the low
cost of a new tank, has made it almost easier for some commanders
to just dispose of a damaged or out of action Vambrace and replace
it with a new one.   In turn, this has led to a market for after-market
parts and refurbished Vambraces that makes them even more
affordable to a wide variety of operators.

Deployment
Most common in the Lyran Commonwealth, the Vambrace is also
often seen in the employ of a wide variety of mercenary units,
planetary militias, second-line military units, and like its smaller
brother the Scorpion it has also been found equipping bands of
pirates and raiders.   The ability of the Vambrace to meet a wide
variety of mission profiles, along with the large number of available
vehicles has made for a large after-market pool of spare parts.
This has made the Vambrace something of a widely modified platform.

I'd drop the LRM-5 from the turret and add it to the front. Saving some tonnage for better armor.

So MG and LRM-5 front
AC/5 and SRM-2 turret

Thus I can IDF over Level 1 obstacles and such...

Interesting idea; every bit of extra armor helps.   I went ahead and modified the design with your ideas, and I think it does work better save for the fact that the LRMs now are only trainable by moving the entire vehicle instead of just the turret.

You won't be using the LRM for pot shots like the AC would. It'll would be for a slow bombardment while advancing. In a case review, I'd take a Lance of four of these, moving each tank in 2-point elements where each can cover the other in either LRM or AC fire.

I'd further would group these with a Infantry mover, to supply more firepower to the unit.

The AC/5 is disappointing in terms of damage. I have experienced some designs using obsolete Heavy Rifles with better results (they do very well against BA, by the way).

The AC/5 would be easier to support in the field than an obsolete weapon system that hadn't seen the light of day since before the Star League era, though; more readily available ammo and spare parts.

To me the major reason to use an AC/5 is because it goes "BANG". ;D

In addition, if you use BV it's actually one of the better weapons. And if you don't use BV it shouldn't be hard to convince people to houserule it to make it better (typically increase the damage a little). :)

Another tank that that's managed to survive despite marginal performance the Protean was not actually designed with a fusion engine in mind despite the massed laser armament. Rather it's a FWL design intended to capitalize on the popularity of the Ontos assault tank.

The sales strategy has work surprisingly well with the Protean being produced in small numbers continually since the 2950s.

Vehicles captured by other nations are often refitted with a large LRM rack in place of the lasers.

my preferred tank by Third Succession War age: 65ton, two solid AC/10s and 30 shots, 9.5ton of armor, equipped with ICE for low cost. Zhukov costs 50% for very little in extra firepower

Hmmm... playing around in SAW, it looks like you could get a 50-ton (LIGHT vehicle bay!) 3/5 tank with an AC/10, PPC and a bit more armor (or two Machine Guns and a half ton of ammo) for a mere 300K more C-Bills (the price of a PPC).  I think it compares favorably to the Valkyrie you'd be denying an engine...

Making the case for the heavies, here's a more ammo-independent version of the Zhukov: this is slightly lighter on firepower, mounting two Magna Mk. III Large Lasers in place of the autocannons, and downgrades the missile launcher to a Holly SRM4. In return, it is slightly better-armoured, wearing 12 tons of ArcShield standard armour.
