There was a complete lack of Jihad-era novels until Embers of War, and there has been a complete lack of Jihad-era novels since then.  Notably, the Jihad was over and done with, sourcebook wise, before Embers of War was published.  I remember it coming out being a big deal that convention season because it was the first new BattleTech branded novel in something like 15 years.

Kansas City players, or people who are just passing through the area, come join us at the Geekery just off Shawnee Mission Parkway for BattleTech!  Current days are Tuesdays in the afternoon and evening.  I can't make every single week, but odds are pretty good that somebody will be there.

There's also technically Isle of the Blessed, which was originally published as a serialized story on BattleCorp back when that was still a thing and then redone as a digital-only novel.

Kinda my point.  Not only is there a lack of Jade Falcon/Jihad era novels, but there's an outright lack of Jihad era novels period.
unfortunately, I don't think they're taking submissions at Shrapnel for Jihad era material, or indeed any material that doesn't fall sometime after 3145.

It's kind of a blank slate, and it's kind of going to stay that way.

Good to know. The last run of my CBT novel reading ended when the FedCom civil war ended, as my friend loaned me his books and that's where his collection ends :cheesy: So, epub by epub I'm working my forward and the Jihad era is the first completely new one for me in this medium.

I should get my hands on some sourcebooks, but those would be so much handier as dead tree editions.

The end of the FedCom Civil War also marked the end of the original FASA novels, though the last couple of them were actually printed after FASA closed.

Shrapnel's run Jihad-era material before, like that excellent story about the Hell's Horses and their Spheroid allies versus the Capellans on Hsien during Operation SCOUR.

To be fair, that story didn't really do anything with Protos that "Tears of Blood" on BattleCorps didn't already establish years ago (and better in some ways, because that story actually gave us a firsthand glimpse as to what it's like to be wired into a ProtoMech). But it was still a welcome inclusion in an already-excellent story!

No, it is one of the VERY rare stories about the Adder-Spirit conflict. Happened on York just before the Adder invasion, it told us the story of a non-blooded Spirit warrior who befriends with a Protomech pilot.
Written by Randall Bill, it is IMHO one of his best.

No, it's a Blood Spirit story.

Gently off-topic, as I haven't yet read any novel from the Jihad era and am working my way through the ebook bundle: I just hope someday I get far enough for most of these discussions to make more sense to me

For what it's worth, the Falcons get a few viewpoint chapters in Operation Ice Storm (pt 1 and 2) by Jason Schmetzer, and it's a darned good read. It's on Drivethru. Just finished it last week. That's the disastrous Ice Hellion invasion of the Falcon OZ in 3071-3072, with a few references to background events at the time - the Jihad in the IS and the Wars of Reaving in the Homeworlds.

I never cared about the Hellions before, but reading it makes me want to paint up a Hellion star to be opfor against my Falcons.

Oh, the Hellions are a blast. The force builds are obviously different from a Falcon force (duh), but there's a certain similarity as well- the Falcons tend to lean into mobile warfare more than most, with faster units like the Summoner, Hellbringer, Black Lanner, etc. being prevalent over slower stuff- they use that as well, of course (Turkina, Night Gyr, Warhawk), but in comparison to, say, a Smoke Jaguar force on average, the Falcons lean towards movement and flexibility as a primary focus.

And of course the Hellions lean into it as a must- no other factor is as important to the Hellions as moving fast. That CAN make life difficult- as you can imagine, you're not exactly going to show up with a Dire Wolf and have a good day. But if you know how to make a mobile force work for you, they're a lot of fun. Hellion play requires a lot of patience, looking for the right moment to make your attacks and knowing when to back off (ironic, given their temperament!), but it does pay off if you work for it. Their homemade Omni, the Hellion, is one of the best light Mechs in Battletech, so basing a force build around those is always a winner.

It means that any Hellions that ended up as bondsmen to the Falcons probably adapted very quickly to their new surroundings- the tactics didn't need to change a great deal, just the color of the uniform.

Fun fact: when doing research for the GenCon AS event last year, approximately 40% of all Omnis in the entire TO&Es in The Dragon Roars and Twilight of the Clans were Stormcrows, Mad Dogs, Warhawks and Ebon Jaguars.  The only trend outside of that was a general disuse of Lights in general.

The Smoke Jaguar stereotype of brutish application of force isn't wrong - those mechs all hit hard - but it's definitely more mobile than you'd think.

What the Jags really lack in their mechs is an abundance of jump jets.
