The Fleet Refit And Modernization Program (FRAM)

FRAM (Fleet Refit And Modernisation)

Initial Ideas – Outgrowth of the NWP (New WarShip Programme) as most new WarShips were simply seen as not needed, or too expensive to produce.  Also, any of the Clans that did invade the Inner Sphere would probably have a larger number of WarShips available to them should there be any surviving WarShips within the Inner Sphere.  Still, new WarShips that adapted to the threats they faced did mean that the older ex-SLDF vessels were more outclassed and this needed to be rectified.

This resulted in the FRAM Project being spread amongst the Scientists who had contributed towards the NWP and in turn it spread across the Clans.

The whole point of the FRAM was that it was meant to be cheap in order to ‘sell’ it to reluctant Khans who viewed resources spent on WarShips was generally a net loss.  This lead to the development of the MDM or Modular Defence Mounting, a series of small, self-contained turrets that would share a universal fixture and layout, but their weapon mountings were modular, allowing a WarShip to be fitted with what was needed.

Three models were produced, a 4-ton, 8-ton and 12-ton mounting, all sharing the same base, power linkages and barbette.  This would allow the whole turret to be removed and replaced with a larger or smaller one, although this still required a dockyard to carry out.
The whole mounting was designed to sit on the hull and not penetrate it, with the only hull penetrations being the power linkages and data feeds to the ships sensor net which would then direct the turrets onboard sensors.  This system had both its advantages and disadvantages.  It was very easy to install and fit as it didn’t disrupt the interior of a WarShip.  But due to its self-contained design, ammunition all had to be carried in the mounting and thus the turrets with projectile weapons tended to have limited endurance due to ammunition constraints.  The turrets also proved to be somewhat difficult to repair.  Any jams or repairs had to be carried out by the ships crew on the exterior of the vessel which is a slow and difficult and sometimes dangerous task.

Other aspects of the FRAM Program saw sensor and electronics updates as well as a series of engine overhauls that saw the oldest ships reactors be removed and replaced with more modern and reliable Clan developed ones, other changes saw the increase in size of ships fuel bunkers and an increased ammunition capacity for projectile weapons, along with improvements to the loading systems for them.  Despite its simplicity the FRAM Program was not widely adopted, and when it was, it was applied unevenly leading several Clan’s Naval Reserve Tourmans to be a mix of ships that had been updated and those that had not.

But for Clan Snow Raven, who had wholeheartedly adopted the FRAM Program, it was felt that it was good, but not good enough.  Thus, began the FRAM II Program.  This was a far more comprehensive program of refits and upgrades that would bolster the Raven’s Naval Arm upon which rested their main strength.

Lola III Class destroyer FRAM II refit

With the Typhon construction program cancelled due to resource costs the Ravens were force to look at cheaper alternatives to improve their screening forces for their main battle line and Capital ships.  With the Lola III being quite common in Raven service (4 in active service, 2 in mothballs) it was decided to upgrade the Lola class, reactivating a 5th vessel that would become the CSR Void Talon and rotate the Lola's through a FRAM II modernization program.  Each ship would be out of service for between 6 - 9 months but this was deemed acceptable.  The 6th ship the SLS D. Winchester was in the worst condition of the two and it was ordered that she be used for spare parts and as a storage hulk until finally being broken up in 3062.

Whilst the ship largely remained unchained in terms of appearance a 25 meter long 'plug' was installed near the hangar deck.  This increased the ships length and increased the amount of internal space available.  Despite this and the re-working of the armour to replace the bulky baffled-space system with more modern Lamellor Ferro-Carbide plating, the Lola III was still horribly cramped and this was only made worse with the FRAM refit.

Whilst the cargo space was reduced this was quickly taken up by the augmented weapons array and their associated systems.  A pair of Medium Naval PPC's was added to the bow whilst the 55cm laser mountings were increased to quadruple mounts.  The autocannons were retained whilst the missile launchers were doubled and converted purely to fire Barracuda missiles.  The broadside lasers were increased and now housed 4 x 45cm lasers.

The additional cooling, combined with the enlarged fighter compliment now increased to a binary (20 fighters) cut into the hull spacing.  This was then made worse by the addition of an extensive array of lasers, autocannons, missile launchers and Anti-missile mounts for point defense against hostile fighters, as well as having to find bunks for another 77 extra crew, including 20 Elementals or Marines.  Even by Clan standards the quarters and 'comforts' aboard a Lola III FRAM II refit were spartan to say the least.  The aerospace group had to hot-bunk, an ancient practice from ancient Submarines where crews were separated into shifts and shared the same sleeping space and indeed the same bunks.  Whilst it might have been possible to reduce this need or eliminate it, the Scientists involved in the design process instead opted to cram additional firepower, protection and electronics onto the ship.

Despite this, the Lola III FRAM refit is generally seen as only being moderately successful.  Outgunned by the more modern Typhon, the new ship outperforms the Lola in many areas.  But, as a gunboat and heavy escort the FRAM II refit produced a viable WarShip that was considerably more capable than the standard Lola III.  Several other Clans would convert a few Lola's to a FRAM II standard.

Here's a modest upgrade of the Lola III, main changes are a slight increase in weapons with a bit more forwards punch as well as improved survivability as well as an enlarged hangar.

Note that this is total numbers of rounds, not tons of ammo.

I can easily picture this ship being more brutally cramped than the standard Lola III to the point that there's probably hot-bunking for some of the crew which has jumped from 288 to 365 and those 77 extra crew need to be put somewhere.  Protection and survivability are moderately increased but its still weak, around Impavido levels, but the firepower makes them quite respectable and the flak batteries would be unpleasant for hostile fighters or DropShips.

As always, any thoughts or comments are most welcome!

CWS Dire Wolf - Sovietskii Soyuz class refit

Following the battle of Radstadt where the Dire Wolf was rammed by the Shilone flown by Tyra Miraborg the Wolves cruiser was forced to withdraw to the Homeworlds for repairs.  Having not been modernized prior to REVIVAL the damage to the Dire Wolf was actually quite severe.  As well as the damage to her bridge the impact of the 65-ton fighter had also buckled the cruisers dorsal keel along the neck area directly behind the bridge section.  Taken to Lum for repairs the Clans as a whole were faced with the fact that the majority of their WarShips were quite vulnerable to a determined and skilled fighter attack.

Whilst the Dire Wolf was caught unprepared with no CAP up, her lack of point defence weapons meant that she was totally exposed until her own fighters launched as well as her DropShips to provide an escort screen. For Clan Snow Raven who had spent so many resources with their FRAM II refits it was very much a “I hate to say I told you so but….” Moment.  They had been mocked for ‘wasting resources’ on the program and now it was shown that other Clans vessels were vulnerable and many realised that if the Dire Wolf had a suitable point defence suite then Tyra Miraborg’s fighter probably wouldn’t have never survived long enough to ram the cruiser.

At the somewhat chastened request of Khan Ulric Kerensky the Wolves requested that the Ravens not only repair the Dire Wolf but refit her in a similar line to their FRAM II Program.  The price for this was resources from the Inner Sphere, the Wolves to pay the complete resource cost of the refit and for the design to be given freely to the Ravens after a short ‘trial’ for it.  With the other Clans angry that the Wolf cruiser had literally been caught with her pants down without a CAP up or weapons manned the Wolves agreed to the Ravens terms as an act of ‘penance’ for allowing the ilKhan to be killed aboard one of their vessels. (This was incidentally used against the Wolves during the Grand Kurultai to choose a new ilKhan).

The refit would take 9 months and significantly increased the firepower and protection of the Sovietskii Soyuz class vessel.  The original Ferro-Aluminium armour was completely removed, this allowed the Ravens to install additional weapons and reduce the cargo space by just over fifty percent.  Whilst it was not possible to increase the engine’s performance and fix the classes sluggish speed, the fuel tanks were greatly increased from 1,400 tons to 3,000 tons of fuel, massively increasing the ships range and allowing her to supply plenty of fuel for her five DropShips.  The armour was replaced with Ferro-Carbide, it was not possible to replace it with Lamellor Ferro-Carbide without delaying the completion of the refit by another 3 – 4 months.  The armour was also increased to 743 tons of plate protection and the armour protection was greatly increased up to levels similar to the Liberator class cruisers.  The hull was also reinforced with additional structural bracing around the engines and ‘neck’ of the cruiser.

The cruisers main armament was enhanced.  Forwards firepower now comprised of a quartet of Killer Whale launchers with deep ammunition bins and these were supported by a trio of light gauss rifles and a sextuple mount of 55cm lasers.  Together these give the ship a long range and hard-hitting punch.

The old 45cm lasers were all removed and replaced with 55cm lasers with quad mounts in fore and aft quarters of the ship whilst the medium naval PPCs were made into quadruple mounts.  Aft firepower also duplicated the bows quad Killer Whale launchers and six 55cm lasers but the stern arcs lacked the gauss rifles of the bow.

For point and anti-fighter defences the Dire Wolf was armed with a mixture of lasers, missiles and autocannons with an emphasis on engaging small craft and fighters at long range to reduce the threat of strafing runs, like those that she had suffered during the Battle of Radstadt.

The fighter bay was enhanced, and now the Dire Wolf could carry a Trinary of OmniFighters (30) and 5 small craft.  Twenty-five elementals are also berthed aboard along with their armour for shipboard security.   Finally, a large NCSS was installed whilst the bridge section was moved to the core of the ship, the original bridge being repurposed as a large briefing/planning room and observation deck.

These refits were expensive and extensive and converted the Dire Wolf into a true Battlecruiser that the class had originally been touted as by Admirals in the SLDF when the ship was first commissioned.  Once she was recommissioned the Dire Wolf was the flagship of Clan Wolf and would escort JumpShips to Tukkayid.  The Refusal War fortunately featured very little naval combat outside of fighter clashes and the Wolf and Falcon Naval Reserves were not engaged.

So as I understand this these are mass neutral refits designed to bring the ships more in line with jihad era combat realities, correct?

Correct, they are refits and in some cases more extensive rebuilds. Not redesigns.

The Raven's realise they can't really afford to loose ships, sure they have the largest Naval Reserve but each lost is near irreplaceable as there was no large scale replacement program in place (save the ones that I've had with the Typhon and co).  And, as they hoped to get a place in the Invasion they looked to the past and thought that they could well be facing a Taurian front style fight where WarShips were engaged by lots of fighters.

So they go about thickening the hides, and adding some firepower and defences.  I'm trying to make the SLDF ships not suck but without making them cheddar fests so they'll still have large cargo bays and the like but nothing to absurd as before.

Plus, I find it insane that even the SLDF ships would have no anti-fighter defences outside the odd class or two.  Yes they were built to operate as part of a huge fleet that would have walls of fighters and dropships between them and hostiles but still!

Fredasa Flight II

One of the success stories of the NWP, the Fredassa corvette was a small but fast, and heavily armed vessel and would go on to be built in large numbers by the Clans, allowing them to mothball older, more maintenance and crew intensive SLDF vessels like the Vincent and the other surviving corvettes still in service.

But the class did have some issues that were looked at by the Scientists of Clan Ice Hellion in the early 3000's.  Whilst they appreciated the ships punch and speed, its percived lack of range troubled the Hellions who preferred to engage at the longest ranges possible before moving in to finish off an opponent.  The standard Fredasa featured a massive ultra-heavy naval autocannon and this could crack almost any WarShip's armour or obliterate a DropShip with a hit but it was short ranged and rather inaccurate.  The other autocannons were also rather short ranged so instead of simply choosing to remove the big cannons, a new Fredasa emerged, one that more suited the Hellions mindset and tactical choices.

Almost all the autocannons were removed, and a pair of NAC-10's were fitted to cover the aft, this freed up considerable weight and space and was then put to good use.  The front 45cm battery was enlarged to a sextuple mount whilst the forward quarters each recived a dual 45cm laser mounting.  The aft quarters though were largely unarmed save for some defensive anti-fighter mounts.  The broadsides weapons were now a pair of medium naval PPCs for range and striking power.  A large array of gauss rifles, ER lasers and LRMs was fitted for anti-fighter and DropShip work whilst a layered AMS battery was also fitted to cover all quadrants.  Finally, a large NCSS was also installed, meaning that the Fredasa Flight II made a superb tracking and patrol ship thanks to her greatly augmented sensor radius.

Unfortunately something had to go and in this case it was the fighter compliment which was reduced to a single Star (10) and a single small craft.  Cargo space was also reduced by a little over 400 tons but the major lack of capital ballistic weapons meant that the ship could carry more consumables without having to devote more space to ammunition storage.

Although more akin to the extinct Dauntless class Escort Destroyer, the Hellions called the Fredasa Flight II an attack ship, one that could use her speed and manouverability to slash at a target at long range.  And this did actually work, in 3044 a pair of Hellion Fredasa Attackers challenged the CSV Steel Python a much larger Aegis class vessel.  The two Hellion ships used their speed to out manouver the Steel Python and made repeated strikes on her aft quarters and sterns with their forward lasers before turning to bring their particle cannons to bare as they turned away.  Unable to successfully engage the smaller Hellion ships and with his fighters deadlocked in combat against the Hellion's, the Steel Python's captain requested Higara and withdrew, surrendering the JumpShip she was escorting and her cargo of metals and HarJel to the Hellions.

CSR Mountbatten - FRAM II refit
Texas Class Battleship FRAM II refit.

As part of the FRAM II series of refits the CSR Mountbatten was taken in to be heavily overhauled and refitted in what was the most resource intensive refit of the FRAM program carried out by Clan Snow Raven.  The decision to refit the battleship was also somewhat controversial seeing as it would take her out of action for a year and a half, with another four months of trials and shakedown to fix any problems.  But Khan Lynn McKenna pressed ahead despite concerns that the ship being out of action for so long would weaken the Raven's Tourman.

Although not a complete gutting of the ship, the refit and rebuilt was extensive enough that some Scientists called the plan a Texas II or Mountbatten class as she really wasn't a Texas class anymore.  The heavy laser battery was retained but with the older 45cm lasers replaced with 55cm lasers for greater range and punch.  These weapons were clustered together amidships whilst the fore and aft quarters weapons were augmented.  The Killer whale launchers were replaced with a quartet of AR-10 launchers with huge ammunition bins for long engagements.  The aft quarters also mounted an extra quad heavy naval PPC turret for additional firepower.  The bow and stern finally recived weapons, covering a huge blindspot and flaw in the original Texas design.  A quartet of heavy naval gauss rifles formed the primary armament although this was the only armament firing over the stern quarter.  The bow though featured a quad mounting for heavy naval PPCs.

The hull was reinforced and overhauled to improve structural strength whilst armour was increased to 2,200 tons of Lamellor Ferro-Carbide plate which significantly improved the Texas classes already formidable protection, making her the most well armoured vessel in Clan service when she completed her trials.  The fuel tanks were extended and the three grav-decks were made into a uniform trio of 100 meter rotational rings to improve crew comfort.  As was fitting of a flagship the Mountbatten's crew quarters were upgraded and, by Clan standards were quite palatial with only 4 crew to a room as well as far more bathing space.  A detachment of 50 Elementals or Marines was carried aboard for onboard security whilst the Aerospace complement was also increased with the capacity for an augmented Trinary of 50 fighters and 10 Small craft.  The ship's electronics were enhanced and linked into a large NCSS for fleet and ground assault command and control whilst a mobile HPG was also installed.

The biggest change though was the huge layer of anti-fighter and DropShip weapons that layered the hull with a a mixture of lasers, autocannons, LRMs and gauss rifles providing blanket fire at all ranges.  A battery of anti-missile turrets also provide terminal defence against fighter and Capital scale missiles.  This heavy battery of point defence weapons was perhaps the greatest example of the FRAM II concept.  With the Raven's planning on taking part in Operation REVIVAL, they could not loose a WarShip to fighter strikes and so anti-fighter defences were greatly increased.

As it was, the Ravens would not take part in REVIVAL, their Tourman was still rebuilding following the conflict with Clan Coyote and instead of fighting the forces of the Houses of the Inner Sphere, the Mountbatten led the fight against Clan Coyote where her reinforced hull and anti-fighter defences proved their worth when the Coyote's and Raven fleets clashed in a series of hard fought trials.  Both Clan Wolf and Jade Falcon would trial for the rights to copy the refit done to the Mountbatten, but the Ravens successfully defended the design and with the launch of REVIVAL, the two Clans could not take their own Texas class ships out of service for over a year whilst they made similar refits of their own.

A seriously large overhaul of a Texas class, cutting into the cargo capacity and rounding out the firepower whilst adding an array of anti-fighter and missile defences.  I think my numbers are correct and i'd love to hear folks thoughts and be brutal if you want! I am not afraid!

okay I see what you doing so it's like these are the only guys that were listening to the dragoons reports. very interesting stuff assuming history plays out in this timeline like it did in Prime then these guys are going to be holy terrors during the Jihad and what comes after as well as the reaving.

Kind of listening and then did the rather typical Clan thing of hyper-focusing on one thing, in this case the Ravens went nuts with their WarShips, which spurred the other Clans to do refits of their own, largely to a lesser degree (the FRAM I refits is far less extensive but was more widespread, whilst FRAM II is almost purely a Snow Raven thing).  But i'm glad ya like :)

Aegis Class heavy cruiser FRAM I refit

Despite their great age, the Aegis class was one of the most common vessels in Clan service with the majority serving under the colours of Clan Snow Raven and Clan Jade Falcon whilst Clan Nova Cat also had a full Star’s worth of the cruisers in active service as well.  Heavily armoured and well-armed the slow cruiser was still giving good service despite centuries of service.

Still this did not mean that changes could not be made and the Falcons included their vessels in a FRAM I refit that would take them out of service for 2 – 4 months per vessel depending on yard availability.  The less intrusive FRAM I refit was undertaken because there was little room on the Aegis class for alteration without significant and resource intensive rebuilding.  The classes great age, design focus, power grid layout and weapons placement meant that little could be changed so the Falcons in turn concentrated on fixing some flaws with the class that had turned up during Clan and SLDF service.

The fuel bunkers were doubled in size, allowing the ship to carry up to 2,000 tons of metallic hydrogen slush fuel for her own engines as well as her four DropShips and onboard fighter complement.  Cargo space actually increased whilst the classes well regarded quarters remained as luxurious as always, well, luxurious by Clan and naval standards.

Unfortunately the AC heavy focus of the Aegis class meant that without severe structural changes the ship simply could not take new weapon type.  Too much space was devoted to the ammunition feeding and loading systems, so to eliminate them would require time consuming changes, and then the power grid would have to be expanded and increased for any new energy weapon fittings.  As the Falcons would have to refit eight ships, the resource cost of such a program was simply deemed too great.  And so, the Aegis retained its heavy battery of autocannons although there were some changes.  The paired AC-35’s were replaced with a quadruple mounting for NAC-10’s in the forward quarters of the ship.  The aft quarter missile launchers were refitted to fire the Barracuda missile, whilst a quartet of NAC-10’s were mounted to cover the stern arcs.  The biggest change though was to increase the cruisers ammunition loadout.  Always a drawback for the Class, the ammunition for its autocannons and missiles was roughly doubled, allowing for far greater endurance in a battle if needed.

Point defence was covered by a mixture of ER lasers and pulse lasers as these required the least internal changes and put the least strain on the ships power grid.  No point defences could be installed on the broadside arcs due to the need to keep the sky arcs clear for the autocannons and additional power linkages and ammo hoists would have been difficult to install with the limited hull space available.  Still it was felt that the cruisers armament, along with friendly OmniFighters would be able to fend off all but the heaviest of fighter threats.

As part of their ‘agreement’ with the Ravens, the Falcons shared the FRAM I refit details with the Ravens who would go on to refit their ships to a similar standard over the ensuing years and both Clans cruiser flotillas were fully upgraded by the time of REVIVAL.
Clan Nova Cat would also refit their Aegis class ships to a very similar fashion, the main difference being weapon positions and the model used rather but the result was nearly the same and all three Clans ships would face action in the years to come.

Re: The Fleet Refit And Modernization Program (FRAM)
Essex II class Destroyer FRAM I modernisation.

Whilst the Lola II underwent a more extensive FRAM II level refit, the Ravens were less concerned about their few Essex II class destroyers.  After suffering 90% losses in the Amaris crisis, in truth, there wasn’t many of the class left and expending a great number of resources on a serious refit was seen as a waste of time and resources.  Indeed, the Ravens were already planning on mothballing their three Essex II ships once the first batch of Typhon class destroyers was complete.  But as this would take several years, the class was hauled in aboard the CSR Home One a Newgrange class YardShip for a modest refit that would extend the classes service life and performance.

The biggest two changes to the class was a doubling of its fighter capacity and a considerable reduction in its small craft bays.  The hull plating was also replaced with more modern Ferro-Carbide plating which in turn increased protection somewhat whilst saving weight.  These changes also allowed for a full 100 meter grav-deck to be installed at a minimal cost in the ships cargo capacity.  Additional berths for the flight crews were added and minor changes to the classes armament were also carried out.  The main emphasis was increasing the ammo supply onboard whilst the anti-fighter armament used more simple weapons but in large quantities to serve as a close escort and anti-fighter vessel.

Anti-ship firepower was somewhat increased with the broadside laser mounts increased to quadruple mounts and the aft quarter lasers were turned into triple mounts and an additional Barracuda was added to fire over the stern.  Two of the sterns NAC-20’s were also relocated to fire ahead, giving the ship a more potent punch when closing with a target.
A multi-layered anti-fighter defence consisted of LRM’s, light autocannons and lasers at shorter ranges whilst as usual, an AMS battery was also installed, but not on broadside arcs due to interference from the ships PPC’s that could and indeed did short out the radar for the AMS mountings.  Instead a cluster of ER small lasers were mounted to provide a final layer of protection.

Whilst it didn’t take long to refit the three ships, the Ravens were not overly enamoured with the refit and their crews soon found that the fire control computer could be overwhelmed when using the secondary battery, often assigning the same target to multiple weapon mounts.  The cooling system was also deemed inadequate but it was still an improvement over the standard Essex II’s in service with other Clans.

The decision to mothball the three Essex II’s wasn’t actually carried out, the three ships were assigned to the Lum Garrison fleet, freeing up the CSR Corvidae, Avalanche and Bloody Talon for redeployment.  This then lead to the ships being used mostly as training vessels for new crews. The three destroyers would in turn be loaned to Clan Jade Falcon as part of the agreement between the two Clans during Operation REVIVAL and the CSR Eternity, Marshal Ney and Mulhacen would be the first Raven WarShips to make the jump to the Inner Sphere, as part of a mixed battlegroup of Falcon WarShips and JumpShips.

Some errors seem to have sneaked in, I think that you have 18 AMS, not 108 AMS.  ???

McKenna Class Command Battleship.

Taken from their yards once their keels were laid down the following McKenna's were chosen to be hugely upgraded and improved;

SLS Terra, SLS Caph, SLS Enterprise,  SLS McKenna’s Pride, SLS New Earth, and the SLS Star League all emerged from an ultra-secure slip near Titan as totally different vessels.

Unlike the sleek Flight I and II McKenna's the six Command Ships were bulkier and far beamier with a flared and 'fat' superstructure that 'ruined' the ships fine lines.  But these aesthetic changes were needed as the Command Ships were built to provide command, control, communications, computers and intelligence support not just to a single fleet or even an entire fleet, but the whole SLDF if needs be.  Each Command Ship was capable of coordinating battles, campaigns and whole wars and they were also built to act as an emergency ship for the First Lord or Commanding General of the SLDF should some disaster befall the Hegemony.

To this end the ships were outfitted with a huge array of advanced computers including a full ATAC system that could coordinate up to 200 drones if needed.  Augmented sensors, multiple communications arrays, a HPG, and massive databanks allowed the Commander of the ship to coordinate campaigns light years apart.  There was berthing for up to 200 Officers and their staff, an additional 500 quarters could easily be converted into a medical centre and this was supported by a full Medical bay that would rival any on Terra.  There was also an emergency bunker that could house 50 and had its own power, food, water and air supply to act as a massive safe house if the ship was damaged and was built to be the last refuge of the First Lord (and was the Admiral or Generals sleeping quarters.)

Berths and an armoury was provided for up to 250 CAAN Marines with points for Nighthawk PA(L)’s as well for shipboard security although this full detachment was rarely carried.  Multiple grav-decks including a large 250 meter one provided for crew comfort and 6000 tons of fuel gave the ship huge endurance, there was even a standalone 175-ton storage facility for liquids in case of emergencies.

The armour package was also heavily augmented with 2250 tons of Ferro-Lamellor Carbide plating the hull, making them the most heavily armoured ships in service.  They were also amongst the most heavily armed WarShips in active service too.  Retaining the McKenna’s impressive broadside batteries of PPCs the ship also featured large clusters of naval lasers, heavy naval gauss rifles and more AR-10 missile launchers than the standard McKenna.  For self-defence against fighters the ship relied on its organic fighter compliment of 60 craft as well as a large battery of lasers, gauss rifles and autocannons (some of these weapon systems did change during the Clan years thanks to lighter Clan technology and that is what is shown here).  Ten Small craft were also carried, and this always included 5 Goalkeeper class Defence Craft as well as an assortment of shuttles.

These massive ships were hugely expensive to both build and maintain and it was standard practice that only 3 would be active at any one time with the other three being serviced or standing guard in the Sol System.  During the Periphery Crisis prior to the fateful events of December 27th, 2766, General Kerensky ordered all six ships activated and made the SLS McKenna’s Pride his flagship before departing for the Periphery.

Priority targets during the Amaris Civil War only one Command McKenna survived to see the Liberation of Terra, the McKenna’s Pride herself and it was this ship that remained Kerensky’s flagship as he led the SLDF into self-imposed exile.
Now in orbit over Strana Mechty the McKenna’s Pride is an utterly unique ship and is maintained by all the Clans, serving as the tomb and Mausoleum for General Aleksandr Kerensky with the ship in pristine condition as if waiting for an inspection.  She still has her intact ATAC computer, despite their hatred of the Drones, the Clans could not bring themselves to alter the Flagship of The Great Father.

This is my thoughts on what the 6 Command McKenna's would be like and a good 'excuse' to use the redone 3057 look, one of the few designs I liked from TRO3057.  I had to think of how and why they looked so different so I came up with the idea of these things being the equivalent of a flying Pentagon and White House in one and basically the SLDF's version of Airforce One.  As always, thoughts, comments etc are most welcome!

Thank you :) I was gonna add the 160 tons of water and turn that into armour plating, seeing as it would make sense to proof her against being thresholded by more stuff if the side armour could be bumped up.  But, I thought the water tank was more quirky and a bit different so that went on instead.

Sovetskii Soyuz FRAM 2 Refit

Although only three Sovetskii Soyuz class ships were in active service with the Raven Naval Reserve (with a 4th in poor condition in mothballs in a cache that ended her life as a spares hulk before being used as a target in Fleet Evolution IV), the cruisers were still useful ships that had the potential to be very capable cruisers, rather than the oversized frigates the SLDF had used them as.

Repositioned as part of the Lum Garrison fleet, the three cruisers were decomissioned and subjected to an extensive overhaul and refit that considerably increased the classes firepower and protection.  Not quite to the levels that would be seen on the CWS Dire Wolf many years later but it did serve as a template for that refit.  The original armour package was replaced with 743 tons of Ferro-Carbide plating which significantly increased protection.  The autocannons were clustered together on the broadside arcs whilst the PPCs were brought together in the stern quarters.  This actually helped with the internal layout and allowed for ammunition bunkers to be increased.  The Barracuda launchers were made into twin cell launchers whilst the bow Killer Whale launchers had their ammunition doubled.
Additional power couplings and power feeds allowed for over two dozen 45cm lasers to be installed across the ship, as well as a dozen 35cm lasers on the broadside arcs.  Unfortunately these lasers did tax the reactors and in combat the reactors had to be run at 105% a needed practice but one that increased the amount of dock yard time the ships would see.

For anti-fighter defences the ship had a multi-layered defence starting with ultra-light flak cannons as well as LRM launchers and ER large lasers. At shorter ranges clusters of ER medium lasers would engage whilst a comprehensive series of AMS mountings could ward off hostile anti-shipping missiles.

The Ravens chose not to increase the fighter complement and retained the original group of 20 fighters whilst reducing the small craft to 5.  The cruisers fuel tanks were more than doubled with 4,000 tons of metallic hydrogen slush carried aboard.  There was also berths for up to 25 Marines or Elementals but these were not always carried and in aboard cruisers, destroyers and frigates the Ravens preferred to use Aerie Mk1 PA(L)'s instead of Elemental suits.

Although the cruisers were still slow, they were now considerably better armed and far more dangerous at long and short ranges.  When the Fleet was reorganized in 3052, all three cruisers would join the Blizzard Naval Star which was to act as a heavy reserve formation and was one of the hammers of the Snow Raven fleet.

Sovetskii Soyuz Class Heavy Cruiser FRAM I refit

Unlike the more extensive refits done by the Snow Ravens, the Falcons and other Clans didn’t upgrade their own cruisers to quite the same degree, and whilst some details might change, the vessel represented here is largely identical amongst those Clans that chose to upgrade their Sovetskii Soyuz class ships during the build up to and the aftermath of REVIVAL.

Clan Cloud Cobra, a long-time ally and friend of the Ravens lead the way with their refit of the CCS Budapest and CCS Damascus.  Replacing the original armour package with 600 tons of Ferro-Carbide plating both saved weight and increased protection across the cruisers hull whilst the fuel tanks were increased to take 3,000 tons of hydrogen slush.  Both grav-decks were also increased to a 100-meter standard which increased habitability and the room available to the now expanded crew.

The armament was largely unchanged but the 45cm lasers all became a uniform quadruple mounting, as did the medium naval PPCs whilst the Barracuda launchers were modernized, replacing the old style ‘arm’ launcher with a more compact VLS tube which then allowed for another tube to be installed as well as a doubling of the ammunition supply for the launchers.

Anti-fighter defences was centred around paired large pulse lasers in their own turret mountings.  ER large lasers covered the stern arcs whilst at short range the ship could engage with medium pulse lasers.  And now, as was usual, each quadrant of the ship was also protected by a cluster of AMS mountings.

The biggest change though was the enlargement of the hangar to allow the cruisers to carry a full Trinary of fighters (30 craft) whilst the number of small craft was reduced to 5.  Whilst the cruisers firepower was not greatly increased, the larger air group made the FRAM I refit a serious threat that was better able to defend itself whilst delivering a fighter strike of her own.  For onboard security there was also berths for 25 Elementals or Marines who could make use of a boarding craft if they were carried.
All these changes required was reducing the cargo capacity by little more than 28,000 tons with the longest part of the refit being replacing the original armour plating with Ferro-Carbide armour.

A total of eight other Sovetskii Soyuz class ships across different Clans were refitted to similar standards with the design changing hands through trade or Trial.

Cameron Class Battlecruiser FRAM II refit

Never the most successful of WarShip classes and a costly boondoggle in the Star League era, the Cameron class was also one of the more prevalent capital ships left to the Clans with at least 14 of the class in active service.  With other Clans slowly building their own Thebes class heavy cruisers and the Raven's ones delayed due to the yards for them being in use at the time there was a bit of a 'cruiser panic' amongst some of the Raven's Star Admirals.  The Thebes class was faster, better gunned and more heavily protected than any 'cruiser' and was more a battlecruiser or light battleship in terms of its performance.  And although a mere handful were under construction the Ravens currently had no answer to them, and deploying a battleship to fight a 'cruiser' would be seen as dishonourable at worst, cowardly and weak at best.

With three Cameron’s in Raven colours it was ordered that all three ships receive a FRAM II level refit at the earliest possible opportunity with the goal of being able to challenge a Thebes.  In this the Ravens partially succeeded.  The Cameron was still slow and 'handled like a draft horse before the plough', but in terms of armament the ships firepower was greatly increased.
This came with its own problems, the reactors suffered notable power shortages and drains when all weapons were active as it was, and the planned refit would stress the power system to breaking point.

This was only discovered after the CSR Blizzard went into be refitted and her armour package was 3/4 stripped.  The two Scientists who miscalculated the power requirements were executed for their errors whilst the Blizzard's power systems were almost totally overhauled before she was given over to the CSR Fort Victoria to undergo the alterations planned.  But this delay turned an 9-month refit into an 18 month one.  The original reactors were removed and the powerplant meant for a Nightlord class vessel was installed and this provided the power needed, but also cut down on the crews living spaces and was maintenance intensive, but it worked, and this was deemed good enough.  What slowly emerged from the Newgrange Fort Victoria was a slow but well-armed ship, not quite the equal of a Thebes but able to present a significant challenge to one.  The Raven's kept all three ships together as part of the Blizzard Naval Star, but this formation was regularly broken up with the three Cameron's acting as command ships  or pocket battleships.  It is a matter of debate if the refit was a success.  Some Officers have said that it would have been better to build more Thebes class ships than refit a trio of aging warhorses.  But despite their problems the refit produced a well-armed, if cramped, slow and difficult to maintain warship that was a threat to anything short of a battleship.

The Cameron FRAM II refits increased the ships firepower with quadruple mounts for the heavy PPCs whilst the heavy autocannons were removed and replaced with larger number of light autocannons for greater range and accuracy.  Perhaps the most surprising weapons included was a quartet of light gauss rifles on the aft quarters.  The Cameron refits were far more capable of fighting at longer range.  The refit also greatly increased the short range firepower of the ship with a large battery of missile launchers, lasers and particle cannons for anti-fighter work.  With their lack of speed the Cameron was never going to catch an opponent so the aerospace group was increased to a full Trinary (30 fighters) whilst there was also bunks for up to 25 Elementals or Marines aboard.  Unfortunately the 57 crew as well as the extra power linkages and ammo feeding systems did make the ship more cramped but the Clan crews were use to spartan living conditions and appreciated the two 100-meter grav-decks that replaced the old 'washing machine' 75-meter decks.

Other Clans did not seek to emulate the extensive refits done to the Raven's Cameron’s and those ships that were modernized mostly benefited from improved anti-fighter defences, deeper ammo bins and very modest increases to firepower.

I love a lot of what you are doing here (and would really like to see the fleet makeups of the clans at the end of the program, especially the Raven's).

I do have a couple of suggestions for the Cameron FII though.

First, upgrade the armor to lamellor ferro-carbide.  This upgrades the armor to around 1000, effectively increasing it's passive defenses by about 25%.  This also has the added benefit of decreasing the need to continue producing ferro-carbide, streamlining production somewhat.

Second, the potential firepower of your design is slightly lower than the original.  My suggestion here is to replace the quad-mount NAC/10s to triple-mount NAC/20s - you actually save 500 tons per bay.  Though it might be nicer to replace the original dual NAC/25s with Medium N-Gauss, this will eat pretty heavily into the cargo tonnage, but it'll give the unit a good range boost.  Of course you could combine any of the three options among the broadside mounts - though that might be a bit eclectic.

I'm glad ya approve and you've probably noticed i'm dropping some lil hints about things :) I'm actually working on a thing, just got to get more on it done :)

And I like the idea of the NAC-20's as you say its gonna save weight.  The armour package I didn't want to upgrade too much, so instead of swapping it out for Lamellor Ferro-Carbide she just gets a bit more armour as I see it as being 'cheaper' than replacing it with Lammy armour which is reserved for bigger ships.  Plus I'd say replacing the armour package is one hell of a job and the Ravens had enough issues with the ships without causing more delays.

I've noticed at least some stuff: the Raven fleet compared to that listed in FM: Updates is a bit larger so far, 5 new Typhons, 1 new Bagration, an additional Sovetskii Soyuz and Lola III, while they lose an Aegis.  Also that Fleet Evolution IV thing...   :D

Fleet Evolution – The growth and change of Clan Snow Raven.

By standing mostly aloof of the growing political infighting that started to boil over during the Political Century the Ravens under the leadership of Khan Ewan McCorkell were well positioned when ilKhan Corian Tchernovkov proposed a series of efforts to calm inter-Clan tensions, one of which was the NWP or New WarShip Programme.  Originally intended as little more than a thought exercise the NWP was supported by Clan Snow Raven as well as Clan Cloud Cobra, but it was less well received by other Clans who tended to view Aerospace assets as second cousins at best to OmniMech’s.
Other efforts included some technology sharing (such as recycling technology or farming equipment) but several Clans still sent Scientists to the various meetings and seminars related to the NWP.

Perhaps more successful than ever intended, the Clans came away with several designs that would eventually be produced, all-be-it fitfully and in an uneven manner, but again here, the Ravens took the lead, perhaps fearful their naval strength would be rivalled by any major building amongst the other Clans.

This lead to the solidifying of the ‘Two Clan Standard’ by the Raven’s leadership, a very deliberate decision to maintain the naval strength to fight and defeat the next two most powerful Clans naval forces, relying on the fleet as a guarantor of their strength and security.

To this end the Ravens would lay down and eventually complete the following ships over the period 2930 - 2968

Fredasa Class – 6 (One traded away)
Typhon Class – 5
Thebes class – 1
Bagration class – 2
Nightlord class – 1

This slow construction level was due mainly due to the way the Clans conducted ‘business’ as well as the more limited resources available in the Homeworlds and Kerensky Cluster which the Clans would in turn compete for.  But this still meant that a ship was completed roughly every two and a half years which is still a considerable feat.

Heading towards REVIVAL and Fleet Revolution I

After the execution of ilKhan Tobias Khatib the birth of the Warden and Crusader factions was simply inevitable and wisely, the Ravens didn’t choose a side, remaining ostensibly neutral in The Great Debate.  Like the Sharks, the Ravens held a position of privilege thanks to their huge naval yards which were used by all the Clans to keep their JumpShips and WarShips in service as well as serving as the main ship building slips at Lum.  This helped the Ravens remain ‘neutral’ in the Crusader/Warden divide but it did not mean they didn’t take advantage of opportunities when they saw them and indeed had ‘many irons in the fire’.  This included trade agreements with the Falcons, Bears and Wolves although the Wolves closeness to Clan Coyote kept Wolf/Raven relations cool at best.

In 3001 Clan Snow Raven launched one of the largest exercises carried out by the Clan’s military forces and was the largest movement of Raven forces since KLONDIKE.  Ninety percent of the Raven’s Naval reserve was recalled to the Lum system to take part in a two-week long exercise called ‘Fleet Evolution I’, which covered many aspects from individual vessel engagements to full on Star vs Star battles.  The final engagement between the ‘Red’ and ‘Blue’ forces was as near a full fleet clash as could be simulated.

This exercise revealed several significant flaws and doctrinal gaps in the Raven’s military capabilities.  In truth, they, like many other Clans were so use to a naval battle being formal duels that it had crystalized their doctrine and methodology. But during Naval Evolution I the ‘Red’ team were under orders to fight unconventionally and ‘think like Pirates’ and during the build up to the exercise the Star Admirals on the Red Team and the Officers under them made an extensive study of records and recordings from The Amaris Civil War as well as the Reunification War and would in turn base their tactics on those.

Whilst the Blue Team fought according to the Raven’s long established doctrine, their lack of experience fighting against an equal opponent who did not fight honourably was jarring and several Captains didn’t know how to react and thus had their ships ‘destroyed’ and during the final fleet clash the ‘Red Team’ won by claiming the destruction of the Blue Team’s flagship.

Whilst ships performed very well in individual clashes or as pairs, there was a noticeable lack of discipline amongst WarShip Captains during larger engagements with Blue Team forces constantly trying to engage in one on one duels and obvious difficulties were encountered when trying to coordinate large groups of ships. This was largely due to the Star Admirals of each Star viewing themselves as equals in rank and wanting to do their own plans.  Red Team also had problems with Captains and fighter crews being very unfamiliar and uncomfortable with having to fight ‘dirty’ as well as suffering the usual problems of command and control with no Star Admiral being in overall command but all viewing themselves as equals.

With an Invasion of the Inner Sphere becoming a distinct possibility, but with a complete lack of intelligence on the state of the Inner Sphere, the Ravens quietly assumed the worst.  That any attack force would be met with WarShips and fighters that would refuse to fight on the Clan’s terms.  And the cold hard truth was that the Ravens were not ready for such an engagement.  Even with the loosening of their rules of engagement the Red Team still didn’t perform well in its role as aggressors and both fleets suffered significant breakdowns in control and tactical sense, a rather poor showing for ‘the naval Clan’, something the Raven’s kept VERY quiet.

Another Fleet Evolution was planned for 3004 and another in 3009 and the Ravens worked furiously to overcome the gaps in skills and knowledge that Fleet Evolution I had exposed.  Just as importantly it would lead to the FRAM Programme.

The FRAM (Fleet Refit And Modernization) Programme was a series of overhauls and refits for the WarShips in service to Clan Snow Raven carried out over the years between Fleet Evolution I and III with the last ship the CSR James McKenna completing her refit in 3011.  There was talk of restarting the NWP and constructing newer vessels to replace the oldest ships in service but the economic realities the Clans faced as a whole mean that this programme was simply not an option.  Economically speaking the FRAM Programme was just more viable.  This didn’t mean it was cheap, and the more extensive refits done to ships like the CSR Mountbatten and CSR Blizzard consumed a large quantity of resources and kept the ships out of service for months or even years.

Servicing such a large number of vessels was also hampered by the lack of available slips at Lum.  Whilst the largest naval yards built by man save the huge yards at Titan, there was only so many docks and slips available, especially as other Clans continued to use the yards themselves.  A solution came in reactivating the SLS Singapore and SLS Home One from their place in the Ravens Naval Caches.  The huge Newgrange class YardShips could take a pair of destroyer sized vessels or a single cruiser at a time.  But, reactivating them took six month a piece further slowing down the programme.  The Ravens also didn’t want to weaken their fleet too much lest they invite a flurry of trials so ships usually went in for a refit when another came out.
Fleet Evolution II

Fleet Evolution II showed that the Raven’s attempts to resolve the flaws that Evolution I had quite painfully revealed.  The Blue Fleet was now under centralized command of the most senior Star Admiral and others were to follow his (or in this case, her) orders.  The Red Team was also more organized and in a change to the exercise fielded a larger number of fighters and DropShips although this was NOT announced to the Blue Team.  The exercise that followed was largely a success and showed that the FRAM I and II refits were worth their investment and although only a few ships per fleet had the refits at the time, they were far more capable than their un-refitted brethren.

This time the Blue team won, claiming victory when they were able to land forces on the Red Team’s ‘moon base’ with the Blue Team’s refitted ships leading the offensive during the final battle of the exercise.

The Cost and the cost of friendship.

Of course with the resources being devoted to their naval and aerospace arm the Raven’s did have to pay a cost, and this was the further dwindling of their ground forces.  Discounting the fleet capacity, the Ravens were a third-rate Clan with a Tourman that was little larger than that of Clan Goliath Scorpion, all be it with more modern equipment and the Raven’s did suffer defeats in several trials losing more than they won.  But, thanks to their vital position as the main shipyards of the Clans there wasn’t too much a risk of these defeats starting a deluge of Trials without destabilizing the Kerensky Cluster if fighting broke out for the utterly vital yards of Lum.

The Ravens still maintained good relationships with other Clans but were careful not to show either Warden or Crusader faction too much favour, watching both sides carefully during the discussions about the Dragoon Compromise, quietly pleased that the Wolves fleet would decrease in strength with the ships given over to the Dragoons.  The Ravens used their other great weapon, politics, to keep out of the growing factionalism that was splitting the Clan, offering to refit one Clans vessel whilst informing others that the ship might not be available as well as trading away older Mech’s and Aerospace fighters whilst maintaining a core of their own.  The highlight of this period was the Raven’s bargain with Clan Blood Spirit, trading away a full Galaxy’s worth of Mech’s in return for a trio of WarShips. But, in truth the FRAM refits and newly built ships that were part of the NWP were straining the Raven’s manpower.  Even by allowing test down and second line pilots and Warriors to serve in more extensive roles than might previously have been ‘allowed’ the Ravens were suffering from manpower shortages that now threatened the expansion and modernization of the fleet and thus the guarantor of their security.  It was decided to retire the Vincent Mk42’s the CSR Huninn and Munnin as well as the Whirlwinds CSR William Adams and Drake.  The two Whirlwinds would be transferred to Clan Smoke Jaguar upon the ascension of ilKhan Leo Showers whilst the Vincents would be converted into a semi-mobile facility with an endo-steel forge and several manufacturing plants on it. The ‘ships’ were under the joint ownership of Clan Snow Raven, Diamond Shark and Cloud Cobra.

Compromise and REVIVAL

In 3009 a veritable bombshell hit the Homeworlds and Kerensky Cluster, with the first intelligence reports from the Wolfs Dragoons arriving and being disseminated.  When the sorry state of the Inner Sphere was revealed the Ravens suddenly had a fleet that didn’t have a real opponent to fight.  Instead of the threat of squadrons of WarShips belonging to the House Lords, there was only wreckage and ruin and nothing large than a JumpShip or DropShip in active service to threaten them.  With the strain of the FRAM refits still being felt and with many ships still to undergo their own modernizations, the Ravens were forced to cancel several major construction programs and focus on the ongoing FRAM refits.  Recognizing that they lacked the strength to take part in an operation in the Inner Sphere as this would require huge numbers of ground forces that they lacked the Ravens were quite happy to compete with the Diamond Sharks as the main movers of goods and material within Clan Space, serving both Warden and Crusader equally.

The capture of the CSV Outbound Light and subsequent interrogation of her crew was the final spark that would start the build up to Operation REVIVAL and having had time to gather their strength and numbers to rebuild the Ravens were ready to bid and Trial for a place in the Invasion when Clan Coyote struck.  Stung by their defeats over the decades and their contraction of power within the Homeworlds, the Coyotes saw the Raven’s as a fairly weak target.  Whilst none could contest their naval might, on the ground the Coyotes felt they had the advantage.  The newly elected Khan Lynn McKenna ordered an immediate counter attack and the bloody ground fighting soon wore down both Clans until mutual exhaustion separated the combatants. The few WarShip clashes had been quickly decided and the Coyotes didn’t press matters further. On the ground they had the advantage but when their next attack was denied Safcon and met with a full Naval Star, they knew they could not push too far.  In 3044 the Snow Ravens would also be approached by their long-time friends in Clan Ghost Bear with a proposal of an alliance and friendship.  The Bears, having won their place in the Invasion were working on a pair of simply gargantuan vessels but lacked the capacity to finish them at least within the next decade.  Offering mining rights and favourable trade agreements that would have (and indeed did) make the Diamond Sharks go green with envy, the Raven’s agreed to help the Bear’s build their monsters and would even provide escorting cruisers for them.  This came at the right time, as the Raven’s were in the process of ‘gifting’ their Whirlwinds to the Jaguars and in return were given what the Jaguars called junk.  The CMS Thor a relatively intact Kimagure class cruiser that was recovered from Clan Mongoose’s naval cache.  With the Jaguars wanting nothing to do with anything belonging to the fallen Clan, the Ravens were more than happy to take the cruiser off them as a fair swap for the two destroyers they had given up.

Despite not winning a place in the Invasion and with their ground forces still recovering from the conflict with the Coyotes, Lynn McKenna ordered the largest naval exercise yet which would also include ground forces and even Garrison forces.  This huge movement of ships, troops and equipment was called Naval Evolution IV and was used to both show the Raven’s strength and capabilities as being undiminished despite the recent war and to reorganize the Naval Stars into something more uniform.

Each Star was also not a single fixed unit, ships could be detached and reassigned for operations at very short notice and were to integrate with their new squadron-mates within a few days.  The Yorktown Carrier Star was only a paper grouping, the carriers very rarely operated together as a single Star and were often spread amongst the Assault and Battle Star’s.  The end result was a far more balanced fleet with logistic elements concentrated together without being part of a Combat grouping.  There was concern over the large number of Potemkin’s in the combat Stars but Khan Lynn McKenna only wanted this to be this way until a new flight of Thebes class ships could be completed to replace them.  Whilst the Potemkin’s firepower and protection made them fine as ‘Ersatz Battleships’ the huge ships were not really built for the role and their placement within combat formations was a necessity born out of a lack of suitable replacements.
Thanks to the resources they were getting from the Bears as well as were to receive from the Inner Sphere thanks to the agreement with Clan Jade Falcon who had loaned the Bonaventure Strike Star and Circe Battle Star’s in return for resources from their planned occupation Zone, the new Thebes class ships would be in service by 3060 which would lead to another reorganization of the Naval Stars when the Potemkin’s were rotated and formed together as the 2nd Logistics Flotilla.

Despite the many challenges they had faced, Clan Snow Raven had assured its naval supremacy, having shaken off the dust and overcome complacency and arrogance to assure that the Clan would thrive no matter what would come when the Children of Kerensky returned to the Inner Sphere.

Potemkin Class Assault Ship FRAM I refit

After the formation of the Clans and during the final battles to claim the Kerensky Cluster and Homeworlds, Clan Snow Raven found themselves in possession of a large number of Potemkin class ships.  Whilst these huge vessels were very useful in moving colonists from world to world or acting as orbital towns and cities whilst the Clan established its holdings, outside of this the Potemkin had little use.

With one of the smaller Tourman’s in the Clans if only counting Mechs, the Raven’s simply didn’t need the titanic haulage and DropShip capacity of the Potemkin’s and several were mothballed throughout the years or would see use as Ersatz-Battleships although they were not really suitable as they were also too valuable to risk.

But with 7 Potemkin’s in active service and with the Raven’s unwilling to trade away such a massive ship that did have formidable firepower despite its role the Potemkin’s were retained and not deactivated or traded away.  Despite their limited roles and overly specialized nature the Potemkin class did receive a FRAM I level refit.  With so much internal space devoted to carrying personnel and their equipment there was little that could be done to change the class in any major way but still changes were made.

The most extensive change was the inclusion of dedicated hangar bays for fighters and a maximum of 40 could be carried.  This allowed the ship to protect herself against hostile fighter strikes and be able to support orbital or near orbital operations, giving DropShips additional cover as they made their approach.  The biggest change though was the heavy and extensive battery of Mech scale weapons fitted for anti-fighter work.  With batteries of gauss rifles, lasers and missile launchers any attacking fighters or DropShips would face a barrage of weapons fire as they tried to engage.  Armour plating was also increased going from just over 1,200 tons of Ferro-Carbide plating to over 1,300 tons of plating.  This was mostly used to cover the huge grav-deck that ran through three quarters of the ships length whilst the sections round the fuel tanks for the ship and her DropShips was also reinforced.  The dorsal hangars for the fighters was also heavily protected to stop a lucky hit from crippling the flight bays.

One section of the grav-deck was given over to a dedicated medical centre with a 500-patient capacity as well as full NBC decontamination facilities.  Fifty Elementals or Marines could be berthed aboard for security and a specialist detachment of 50 Mission specialists were quartered to run the ships advanced electronics.
As the Potemkin’s primary role was to achieve orbit over a planet and land troops, an array of electronics were added to the ships keel to help coordinate both the landings and any battles and these were maintained and run by the personnel who also operated the HPG.

Because the modernization was largely limited in scale and scope most other Clans refitted their Potemkin class ships to a similar standard and level.  Whilst there were differences it was mostly with regards to defensive weapon choices and equipment fits.  For example, the CSJ Osis’s Pride lacked a medical bay and instead carried a larger complement of Elementals as well as all their support gear whilst the CWS Full Moon relied purely on energy weapons for its anti-fighter work.

Nightlord class Battleship (Snow Raven variant)

When initially designed the Nightlord class was built to be a one ship invasion force, carrying enough Mechs and Elementals to overwhelm all but the most massively defended of worlds.  She also had a varied armament that allowed her to fight her way into orbit and bulldoze through the usually lighter defences placed over a world as well as, if needed, conduct precision orbital bombardments.   Whilst most Clans were happy with the designs, the Raven’s CSR Snow Raven was altered during construction to be what some called the Nightlord II.
The Raven’s simply didn’t see the need to carry such a huge landing force and there were some jokes that there wasn’t enough Elementals to fill out the ships berths in the entire Tourman.  They liked the basic hull, its heavy armour and all-round firepower, but it wasn’t a battleship in the eyes of the Ravens, more a huge assault ship, and they already had seven of those with the Potemkin class ships they possessed.  What would emerge from the yards at Lum was superficially similar to a Nightlord class vessel but was far more capable as an anti-shipping weapon than as a planetary assault vessel.

The original weapons package was stripped out, the polyglot mixture of weapons never sitting easy with the Ravens.  Instead the ship was to be armed with a mixture of lasers, particle cannons, autocannons and naval gauss rifles in a layout that was clearly influenced by the Thebes class cruisers.
The huge Mech and Elemental capacity was greatly reduced to a pair of Trinaries of each (30 Mechs, 75 Elementals, and another 25 Elementals/Marines for onboard security.)  Whilst the fighter compliment was instead doubled to 40 craft with another smaller hangar capable of taking up to 10 small craft.  The now usual mix of point defences was handled by a mixture of large and small autocannons and lasers, ER and pulse, making her exceptionally dangerous to approach for fighters.  As she was a battleship the sensor suite was tied into a small NCSS to allow for greater fleet coordination as well as a HPG for long range communications.

This resulted in a more rounded and capable WarShip that still offered some of the flexibility of the Nightlord as an assault platform.  But, with their smaller Tourman, this capacity was rarely used aboard the CSR Snow Raven and instead the Mechbay’s were often used as additional training areas or storage areas for additional cargo when not in use.

Of the eight Nightlords completed and in service at the time of REVIVAL, four were Nightlord II’s and the class was well regarded by Commanders and crew alike.

Not a TRO, but a fluff book that I did along with some designs from Maingunnery

I like it never sat right calling the nightlord a battleship. She was more an anphib in my mind too but that's what happens when mech jocks design starships.

NCS True Vision Congress Class Frigate FRAM II refit

As one of the largest users of the Congress Class and with one of the class serving as their Clan’s flagship, it was only to be expected that Clan Nova Cat would modernise and upgrade their Flagship to a FRAM II standard.  The other Congresses in Nova Cat service didn’t see quite so extensive a refit but it still increased their firepower and is somewhat joking called a FRAM 1.5 refit.

Whilst the original Congress was built to explore and patrol the vast tracts of the Star League, escorting convoys or carrying out months long anti-pirate patrols, the Clans found little use in the classes formidable endurance or advanced sensor array.  Despite this, the class soldiered on but with REVIVAL on the Horizon and other Clans upgrading their WarShips, the Nova Cats had to do the same lest they be at a disadvantage.

The NCS True Vision was singled out for special attention after having been the Clan Nova Cats Flag Ship for over a century despite her not being the largest or most capable of the Clan’s vessels.   But as one of the vessels favoured by Sandra Rosse the ships history made her the only logical choice for the superstitious and mystical Nova Cats to serve as flagship.

The refit carried out at Barcella Naval Yard Alpha was both extensive and expensive, the hull was stripped with her armour package removed and replaced with nearly 500 tons of Lamellor Ferro-Carbide armour.  This allowed for the interior to be reorganized with the ships passage ways to allow the passage of Elementals as well as allowing for additional strongpoints to be fitted to protect against boarders.  Additional quarters were also installed for not only 25 Marines but up to 50 senior officers including the Khan and his or her staff.  The additional tonnage of armour also increased the frigates protection, giving her protection above that on the larger Sovetskii Soyuz class cruisers.

The cargo bays were rearranged with over 45,000 tons of cargo space sacrificed to increase the True Vision’s firepower.  This only slightly decreased her cruising capacity and the fuel tanks were increased to 4,000 tons of metallic hydrogen slush, allowing her to sustain a burn with her engines for a considerably longer time.
The already advanced and capable sensor suite was tied into a NCSS suite to allow the True Vision to direct and coordinate friendly forces within a solar system.  The aerospace group was doubled with room for a Binary of Omnifighters to be carried onboard (20) in addition to the two DropShip docking collars.

The weapons fit was also heavily augmented, the Congress class as built was more than capable of handling Pirate craft or House WarShips but was found to be lacking against better armed opponents and was outclassed by the M5 CASPAR Drones and in Clan space the large Frigate often found herself outgunned and relegated to a more supporting role, which was felt to be a waste of a  760,000 ton WarShip.

The refit carried out to the NCS True Vision most certinally gave her teeth.  The bow missile launcher was replaced with a trio of AR-10 launch units, each with 20 of each missile type as ammunition.  The ships broadside weapons were also removed, replaced or upgraded, the dual autocannon mounts in the ships forward quarters became a quadruple mount.  The forward and aft quarters also recived a pair of Barracuda missile launchers for long range anti-fighter or DropShip engagements.  The light autocannons on the broadside arcs were replaced with a trio of heavier weapons, giving the ship a far greater punch and for long range engagements a quartet of medium naval particle cannons were also installed.  The aft quarters also featured a quartet of PPCs and a quartet of light autocannons fired directly astern.  An extensive battery of the Nova Cats preferred weapons, ER lasers and PPCs provided the main anti-fighter punch whilst an array of AMS mountings covered every angle.

With her Binary of fighters the True Vision was far more resilient against fighter strikes, often the bane of a WarShip and her anti-fighter armament was heavy enough to discourge fighters from pushing too close.

The refit was seen as a huge success but its cost meant that it was unique, no other Clan would copy the refit and limited themselves to comparatively minor upgrades and updates, rather than the near complete rebuild required to match the True Vision’s performance and firepower.

Congress Class Frigate FRAM I refit

The more widespread (but not overly common) refit and modernization of the Congress Class, the FRAM 1 was far more modest a refit than the huge overhaul the Nova Cats did for their flagship.  Armour is slightly increased along the broadside arcs at a very minor cost in nose and stern protection but the main focus was on firepower.

An additional launcher for a Killer Whale missile was fitted in the bow, the newer, more streamlined missile replacing the huge and bulky SLDF era design saved space if not weight.  The fore and aft quarters autocannons were altered into quadruple mounts whilst the old heavy autocannons were removed.  Paired VLS cells for Barracuda’s were installed in the fore and aft quarters for additional long-range firepower.  But the ships main ranged punch came with its broadside weapons.  The autocannons and missiles were removed, and in their place a quartet of light and medium particle cannons gave the ship its main ranged firepower.  Anti-fighter and DropShip firepower was augmented at short range with a mixed battery of lasers, particle cannons, missile launchers and autocannons, whilst a layered AMS covered every quadrant.

The frigates fighter compliment was also doubled, allowing her to carry a Binary of OmniFighters (20) as well as five small craft.  A full Star of Elementals could be carried (25) for shipboard security or boarding actions of their own.  All this came at a cost of cargo capacity but the ship still had 4000 tons of fuel onboard as well as extensive reserves of spare parts, food and water.  The trade-off was seen in a positive light and most Clans would refit their own Congress class ships along similar lines.  Surprisingly the Snow Raven’s didn’t refit their Congress, instead she was kept in orbit over Lum and would serve as a training ship for new crews and fighter pilots.  She shared this role with the CSR Yorktown, as the huge Ark Royal class carrier was being reactivated after her long sojourn in mothballs.

Thebes Class Heavy Cruiser Flight II

Following the completion of the FRAM and FRAM II refits in the late 3040s (the last refit was completed December 12th 3049) and the reorganisation of the Snow Raven Tourman ( https://bg.battletech.com/forums/index.php?topic=61530.0 ), several flaws were still found in the makeup of the fleet.

This mainly stemmed from the deployment of six Potemkin class ships into front line formations.  Whilst the FRAM I refit had improved the classes defences and fixed some flaws. The ships were still far too specialized in their design as well as being difficult to repair and basically too valuable to risk despite the firepower they brought.

The answer was to produce a new group of Thebes class cruisers to replace the Potemkin’s and allow the huge ships to be put back into the logistics and assault role that they were designed for.  The sole Thebes class ship in Snow Raven service the CSR Blood Raven had proven itself in the fifteen years of service she had rendered to the Clan.  But, it was decided that the new ships that would be built would have a different weapons mix compared to the initial design.
Whereas the Thebes Flight I had a mix of weapons that suited Clan Trials, where weapons could be bidded away, the Flight II would be more traditionally armed with a mixture of lasers, autocannons, missiles and particle cannons.

Resource allocation was seen as fairly easy thanks to the supplies the Ravens were reciving from the Falcons and Bears in return for their assistance with either moving supplies and escorting their JumpShips or with the construction of new WarShips.  Room at their naval yards was a problem however as there was only two slips large enough to construct the Thebes class available due to the cruisers size and mass.

Construction was to be completed by 3062 with four years allocated to the construction, fitting out and trials of each pair of newly constructed cruisers which would then immediately be assigned to Naval Stars to replace Potemkin class ships on a one by one basis.  On schedule in 3054 the CSR Horus and CSR Thoth would join the Raven Tourman whilst the CSR’s Huginn and Muninn would follow in 3058 whilst delays in construction saw the Iskandar and Sirocco not scheduled to enter service until 3066 with both ships construction being halted due to the assault on Lum.  The battle of Lum saw the Sirocco take significant damage in her yard whilst the Iskandar was only moderately damaged and construction of both ships was not fully complete until 3070
As the most modern ships in the Snow Ravens service the Thebes was often used as the Flagship of a Naval Star unless it was formed around a Battleship and during the evacuation of the Homeworlds the six Thebes fought together as a single reinforced Naval Star defending the evacuation convoys now streaming into the Outworlds Alliance.

-looks at fluff and art-
-envy intensifies-

While I always want go greatly simplify weapons layouts on vessels, I like what you do with them here.

I do wonder why the heavy nose armor, though - shes armed like a broadsider, and I by habit dont like pointing my nose at people anyway...

So how did one of these things end up in the smoked jaguars?

The Jags had two built for themselves as replacements for their lost Battleship.  Built to a different standard they traded cargo space, habitability, endurance, their LF battery and a star of fighters for a different weapons fit and significantly more structural integrity and armour.  Called the Scharnhorst class Armoured cruiser in Jaguar service the CSJ Scharnhorst and CSJ Gnisenau were active in their Tourman during REVIVAL.

The CSJ Gnisenau had to be scuttled, her engines and fuel tanks were damaged during the retreat infront of Task Force Bulldog and without the ability to repair her in time she was abandoned and scuttled by her crew.  The CSJ Scharnhorst died in the fighting over Huntress.

Well, thats a terrifying brick of Lammellor Ferro-Carbide and Guns.  Its inability to operate at long run isnt THAT bad.  Shes got the usual 5Kt Fuel that seems to be warship standard, and 13Kt of Cargo isnt much, but its a lot more than Mijolnir has!  :)

You said they sacrificed their LF Battery - your still paying tonnage for it in that post.  So maybe that could give her enough cargo to start having a reasonable operation range?

Really, the Scharnhorst is very much an Armored Light Battleship (and appears to be treated as such in the Jaguar touman), while the Thebes I is a proper Heavy Cruiser, and the Thebes II is closing in on Battlecruiser status.

I like the Thebes II, it's streamlining of weapons makes a lot of sense, though I kinda wish the original standard-sized weapons had remained.  ;)

And yes, the Scharnhorst is a very big brick of Lamellor Ferro-Carbide.  Since I made it (with some directive advice from marauder), I'll comment on how I usually deal with deployment length.  Usually this is very heavily based on cargo, with smaller ships being able to get away with 15-20kt with 5kt of fuel, mid-sized ships usually need about twice this amount while still getting away with 5kt of fuel, larger ships tend to want closer to 100kt and fuel tanks should be 7.5-10kt.  Cutting these amounts in half makes for short deployments, and the Scharnhorst, with nearly a third of what it ought to have is almost entirely built to take on other clans - It doesn't really have the legs to get much beyond the Pentagon worlds.  Just my two-cents on how I view cargo capacity, and in all honesty, I admit that it's a limitation I place on myself to limit the inner munchkin.

A bigger limitation I put on myself is that Aerospace Fighters tend to "cost" ~500 tons rather than the 150 tons the bay itself is.  This is intended to indicate the CAP as well as additional training while maintaining the ability to repair and launch a couple of full sorties against opponents.

Thats a reasonable weighing of fighters, though I think for ‘other expendables’ Intend to go with a year of food, 180 burn days of fuel, and a few pecentage of mass in parts.  Fighters would be resource hogs, as would dropships.  Missiles depends on how many to the death fights you get into per deployment....

Wouldn't a ship from that era have double heat sinks?

Alliance Class Battlecruiser

Length 1050 meters
Displacement – 975,000 tons
Crew Compliment – 776 Including 50 Marines/Elementals with Quarters for 25 Senior Personnel and staff

Despite the cost of having to rebuild and start anew, the Scientists of Clan Snow Raven were not idle, and even spare time was taken up by projects and group research.  Significant reserves of ores found on worlds near Wynn’s Roost and in their asteroid belts allowed for longer term plans and construction projects.  Whilst many remained thought projects some did start to advance and one of these was the Alliance project.

It was hoped that by 3072 the yards at Quatre Belle would be fully reactivated and that the RavenSpire yard at Wynns Roost would be active by 3075.  The core of the RavenSpire yards would be the CSR Meuse whilst the other two ships would become mobile factories and processing facilities for the large quantity of ores the Ravens would be obtaining from Asteroid mining.  Using the ship as the core of the yard would jumpstart their production and serve as a solid foundation and plans were already well in advance for the layout of the slips that would be constructed and onboard facilities.

Whilst Quatre Belle would act as the main repair yard and slip for the Fleet at first, this role would be taken by RavenSpire once it was fully operational and its first major vessel to be constructed would be a new battlecruiser that would also symbolize the good relationship with their Outworld allies.

At 975,000 tons the design shared many construction similarities with the Thebes class and the two designs were visually similar although the Alliance was more bulky and its large 200 meter grav-deck was quite noticeable.  The weapon choice was also similar to the Thebes flight II but with greater missile coverage and a heavier broadside punch as well as an additional Star of fighters giving the ship room for 40 in addition to a Star of Small craft for 10 in total.

Full flag facilities were fitted as standard as were quarters for a Senior Officer and his or her staff, whilst onboard security is to be provided by 50 Marines or Elementals.

The initial design when shown to Khan Lynn McKenna was designated the Thebes Flight III but was renamed to reflect the Raven’s new situation and construction was authorized with the start date to be one day after the RavenSpire yard went active.  Despite the tumult of the following years, the first ship the CSR Alliance was completed in 3081 and her sistership the CSR Phoenix would complete in 3085.  These ships and other new built or repaired ships would go a long way to restoring the level of naval strength that the Ravens were more comfortable with and the major construction projects, involving both Outworld Alliance and Clan Snow Raven would help bind the two together and would, in part, lead to the birth of the Raven Alliance in 3090.

As you're putting a Flag aboard her, why skimp on the NCSS?  I'd go for a large vice small...

Because LNCSS is mind-blowingly expensive, and the whole ‘batchall’ thing kinda undermines the point?

Compared to dropship collars, they're drops in the bucket.  And how much faith are they going to put in a batchall after dealing with the Sphere for that long?

The installation of the NCSS is, in my mind, part of the Ravens evolution to their new environment.  They've ambled into the Inner Sphere just as the Jihad is kicking off and whilst there will be more on this in the future, the Raven's are not stupid.  With nukes flying, you can bet that anything that jumps into a system under their stewardship won't be given the courtesy of a Batchall.  Nukes are dezgra, and so are the people who use them and they do not deserve any formal courtesy.

That's where I thought you were going, so my first question still stands: why a small vice large NCSS?

Mainly for head canon reasons.  I see the large NCSS as being a very large and fully intigrated system that would be found more in specialized ships that are built so this things threaded into their hulls to act as spying/observation kit.

I... dont think it has to be that way, but in matters of headcannon there can be no dispute.

Even if a LNCSS is better, if a small is all you think you need, maybe you go with that.  Maybe technology in that narrow area has stagnated/declined among the clans, as they havent needed it.
