Its probably because the Trek models are the same ones used in the Hero Clix version.

Yup. And Clix minis on the secondary market are cheap. 8)

Some of them are the size of the old Star Trek Micro Machine ships. How awesome would be if they came out again! That also goes for Star Wars, Babylon 5 and other miniatures.

Mmm...a reliable source of 1/7000 Vor'chas and 1/3800 Mirandas... {>{>

Not sure what Star Wars ones would be really useful, though if they ever cast a decent one, a MM ISD could probably be kitbashed into a 1/15000 Victory pretty easily...

Unfortunately, the casting quality on a lot of the Micro Machines was abysmal. So much bending, I'd almost consider Mongoose-made minis to be superior.

I never got into the Attack Wing game becuase I've played Star Fleet Battles for years to get my Star Trek gaming needs.

I actually played my first game this weekend and won, yay!
100 point killem all game, my force:
2nd Division Cruiser
-Dukat
-Captured Intel
-Boheeka
-Jem Hadar
-Torpedoes
-Polaron Beam
-Long Range Tachyon Scan
5th Wing Fighter
-Gelnon
-Jem Hadar
-Polaron Beam
-EMP

OPFOR:
4X Jem Fighter w/Polaron Beam

I completely forgot to use the EMP, but I lost the 5th Wing fighter in the 3rd round anyway. Dukat proceeded to clean up all 4 of the OPFOR ships with one Polaron, 2 Torpedo attacks, and finally dogfighting the last one for 4 rounds and getting it with the main gun. The Split-S was pulled off as the last maneuver to get him in the front arc.
I forgot the names of the officer upgrades, but will asd them later, and I never used the one on the cruiser or the Tachyon scan either.
Was lots of fun, hope to have more!

I just don't understand all the cards. I just want to go ship on ship. More of a fleet game.

The cards are upgrades to the ship, I could not use a Polaron Beam if I didnt pay the points for the card. And its a pretty easy way to keep track of upgrades.

I've played a number of games of STAW and I generally like it.

I don't want to clutter the thread, but for those who are interested, here are my observations;

I'm curious to hear what a real trek fan thinks of my take on the game.
Epitaph on an Army of Mercenaries

These, in the day when heaven was falling,      Their shoulders held the sky suspended;
The hour when earth's foundations fled,         They stood, and earth's foundations stay;
Followed their mercenary calling,               What God abandoned, these defended,
And took their wages, and are dead.             And saved the sum of things for pay.

So, played the Tholian Web scenario today. The event was dominated by Borg, 4 of 6 players. I went pure Dominion, the other player went mixed Fed and Romulan. I was only able to win 1 of 3 games due to the other player getting caught by the web.

Kansas City players, or people who are just passing through the area, come join us at the Geekery just off Shawnee Mission Parkway for BattleTech!  Current days are Tuesdays in the afternoon and evening.  I can't make every single week, but odds are pretty good that somebody will be there.

I...wow.

On the one hand, I'm happy because holy goatballs, a Star Wars fleet game that looks like it might not be utter crap!

On the other hand, I'm very sad because I've but a lot of work into my current SW fleets, and I HIGHLY doubt these ships will be remotely in scale with the existing stuff that's out there.

...but I will buy a Star Destroyer. My honor demands it.

Apparently it will use a sliding scale, so you could easily use one of the existing SSD models out there. All you'd need are the  stats.

Just the issue with Star Trek ships and I'm sure with the Star Wars ships is they will not be to scale. Some would be huge and some would be so tiny, and all the same price.

I highly doubt it. The scale issues in Attack Wing stem from reusing Heroclix molds. Star Wars has no such source.

Wasn't there a attempt of a captial ship for Star Wars a while ago, can't remember the maker but the ships were not that great.

Agreed. Depending on the size, you might be able to use older models, but who knows. I, for one, am seriously considering this. We'll see where it goes from here...I have high hopes.

Masochist.  I've played it a few times, and my dad's got the edition that came out three-hole punched, so you could replace pages with ones from later rule books.

The only other time I've seen that method was for Navy tech manuals.
The original game was great, though.  It was released as a "pocket" game with rules, game board and counters in a medium size zip lock bag.  True, it bloated up later, but at the time is was the only ST game in town, and it worked really well for duels and small squadron play.   There is a simpler version out now (Federation Commander), and two ports of other systems (Starmada/Klingon Armada and A Call to Arms: Bablylon 5/A Call to Arms: Star Fleet).

The main drawback for a lot of potential newer players is that it does not contain anything from the movies or subsequent series.  Their licence is strictly for TOS and while they have expanded their game with new, original empires (Lyrans, Adromedans, ISC, etc.) they can't touch the Borg, Cardassians, Ferengi, or any of the newer Federation, Klingon or Romulan ships.
