Fallout: Exploding onto your screen April 2024
« on: 20 March 2024, 08:49:25 »
I'm surprised there's not a thread about this already, but what the hell, I'll do it. I'm a diehard fan of the game series, and much like Battletech I never wanted a movie or series because I never have trusted anyone to get it right- there's too much risk of ending up with a movie like Doom, or a series like Halo, for me to want to see one of my absolute favorite fictional universes get wrung out like that.

The reason this one means so much to me is personal. In 2007, I moved from my hometown of Denver to Washington D.C., and it was a culture shock. I was starting a new job, I was suddenly living in a city I'd never been to before, knew all of one person (former Battletech line dev Ben Rome, but he lived across town from where I was now living)... I'm not the most social person, so I was very lonely and struggling. And as I was still trying to adjust to life there, Fallout 3 came out. I knew the series well, but it was different this time- and not because it was first-person. I was in the same city I was learning to live in! I was seeing the same places in the morning on my way to work as I was seeing the prior evening in the game! It was a major part of my coping mechanism, as sad as that sounds, and so Fallout 3- and the series in-general- are very dear to me. I continue to be a huge fan to this day (my wife and I both are avid Fallout 76 players)

So when Amazon announced 'Fallout', I got worried about crappy-looking effects, bad acting, dumb stories by people who aren't familiar with the universe the games have forged over the last quarter-century... this was a nightmare for me. And for all the optimism that The Last Of Us gave me- a series that looked at its source material and NAILED the tone, setting, and casting, there was... well, a Halo, a Doom, a Wing Commander...

We're now a few weeks from launch here, we have a couple of trailers up, a full scene posted (I'm having trouble getting links to work as I type this, but they're easy to find on Youtube- sorry!), and... this looks more like the former, guys. The casting looks REALLY good (I'm a longtime Walter Goggins fan anyway), the sets look like they could have been pulled right out of Fallout 4 screenshots, and they made a very interesting choice by basing the game several years ahead of the events of FO4 (and a continent away). There's no retelling of a prior story the way The Last Of Us did, they're telling a new tale in a familiar universe, disconnected from anything prior. The places are familiar (looks like we're back in the old NCR!), but the people, and their story, is all-new.

Couldn't be happier with what I'm seeing so far- can't wait for April 12 to finally watch this.

i think there was a thread about the show being made a bit over a year ago...u guess no one wanted to play a necromancer with that one...
btw some scenes were filmed in long island...went to see the set when my friend was visiting me while back...

I wonder if the long island scenes were flashbacks? Either depicting the pre-war world, or the post-war backstory of a BOS member. We see a prydwyn type airship show up, so the east coast BOS has some involvement despite the story being set on the westcoast.

there are some hints in interviews and the trailers that the NCR no longer has control of the parts of California that the show starts in, could be the resource crunch that got indicated was coming by NCR officials in fallout new vegas actually did hit, and the NCR either shrunk heavily around its core territory at shady sands and vault city, or perhaps collapsed entirely.

I’ve never played the games and I’m only vaguely familiar with them, but I’m excited for the series. Everything looks top notch so far.

Wife and I got in the first two episodes last night. I'll put up thoughts with spoiler tags later, but for now... I'm very happy. There's a few minor hiccups for me- the flying power armor we saw in one of the previews just... never really looks all that good, honestly, it always is very obviously on wires and doesn't move around in the air well. And that's about it- everything else, even small details like seeing familiar products in a pile of garbage, or the FO4/76 HUD for power armor on the view inside of the character's helmet, were just perfectly done. Probably won't get in more of it until Friday evening- ironically, my evening tonight will be taken up with my Fallout 76 gaming group- but looking forward to seeing where they go with this.

Amazon dropped all eight episodes (all of season 1) in one go.

I'm 3 episodes in and I've really enjoyed it so far

I disliked the flying power armour but I think it was done to avoid the "superhero landing" of a full thrust, I think it was to just show we're bigger and better we don't care how we look

Loved the tone and layout of the story and they kept the violence like a fallout game (ridiculous and bloody)
My three main Alternate Timeline with Thanks fan-fiction threads are in the links below. I'm always open to suggestions or additions to be incorporated so if you feel you wish to add something feel free. There's non-canon units, equipment, people, events, erm... Solar Systems spread throughout so please enjoy

Some of the critics have lambasted this.  The rancor is strong in some circles.

Watched 2 episodes so far, it was really good. Its got some of the standard operating procedure in TV shows. It's funny and bloody and gory all at the same time.

I've gotten to episode 4 so far and the one thing that annoys me is that there's a recap at the beginning of each episode.  It seems like very pointless padding for a streaming show.

I’m 3 episodes in and like it. No major complaints at all aside from the recaps, but that seems to be a thing in a lot of the series I’ve watched. I did keep falling asleep in episode two and three, so I had to rewatch them, but it wasn’t because they were bad, it was because I was trying to watch them while exhausted.

Not having more than a passing knowledge of the game/franchise, I like the flashback stuff and how they’re building the story. It’s nice to watch something without “knowing what to expect”.

Yes.  I also prefer self-contained shows or movies that don't require a "what you need to know" article or essay.  Make back story part of the unfolding narrative.

No, they're not doing lore dumps, they're doing "previously on" recaps of what's happened in previous episodes as if we were watching this show on broadcast television and we only got one shot to see each episode before the summer reruns.

And I'm still glad the show is self-contained even if they do campy re-caps like old serial radio broadcasts or TV shows.  Adds to the 1950's feel.

My wife is a big fan of the games- when her dad was terminally ill, a few months into our dating, she asked how I dealt with difficult times in my life, and one of my fallback coping mechanisms is a good, engrossing game- something that allows me to lose myself for an hour or so into a world that isn't the one I'm struggling with. Fallout being a favorite of mine, I suggested she try Fallout 4 out- she's not a gamer traditionally, had never played anything first-person before... we're now a couple of weeks from our fifth wedding anniversary, and make regular 'date-nights' out of Fallout 76 together on the dual-Xbox setup in our home (and often join people from the forums, so if you're on Xbox send me a note sometime!)

So this was always going to be something we were doing together, her and I. The wrinkle is that she just had abdominal surgery a few weeks ago, and still isn't feeling great, so it took us a few days to get through the show- we wrapped up Ep. 8 last night, and we're both very happy with what we got out of this.

A few scattered notes, and THERE ARE SPOILERS IN HERE.

+Little details had us both very happy- the appearance of things like the FO4 Junk Jet in a scene gave her a laugh. For me, seeing the classic-era 10mm pistol (and later, the current-era version too) was a nice touch since we're back on the California coast here. Even just random objects in the background of scenes- Sunset Sarsaparilla ads, Abraxo containers, etc.- it shows there was an attention to not just detail, but a true love of this universe by the writers and creators for this show that goes above and beyond merely making a show and slapping a thin universe-themed veneer over it the way Halo felt like it did.

+I am adamant that the healing properties of ass jerky are likely limited.

+Still not thrilled with the look of the jumping power armor- not just that it looks like it's on wires, that was disappointing, but from a practical, in-universe standpoint as well. Max (and later Hank) jumped while their hands were empty, but Brotherhood troops appear to be issued those massive assault rifles in this show, and we regularly see them in other media holding other heavy weapons like miniguns. How would you hold a minigun and still utilize the hand-jets? One of the VERY few things that I frowned at across the eight episodes.

+Best wife line: When one of the vertibirds in the last episode got hit and spun out of control; "...NOW it feels like a Brotherhood pilot."

I frightened my cats with my yell of joy at the last shot of Hank approaching New Vegas. I also was intrigued by the apparent damage to the city in the closing animation- the big breach in the wall next to the iconic Vegas sign is worrying, and the buildings in the animation (aside from the Lucky 38) looked kind of skeletal- including what would have been some of the casinos that were running 15 years prior when we last saw them. I'll be interested to see what happened here...

+...and it brings up the question many fans are asking, 'what is the canon ending?'. Based on the damage here, and the beating NCR took over the last few years? I'm not entirely sure the answer isn't 'Legion won'.

+Meanwhile, Vault-Tec. Let's take a moment there. When people talk about evil organizations in games, I've always put them right up with Umbrella as being the worst of the worst, but... man, maybe I underestimated them after all. To not just be (apparently) behind the Great War to begin with, but then to be surreptitiously pulling the strings for the next two centuries- including destroying the capital of the NCR in what looks to be another nuclear strike!- that's beyond anything I figured they were capable of. And having gone through a few of their Vaults, that says a LOT.

Anyway. Many thoughts around this, and greatly looking forward to Season 2, which based on the tax cuts Amazon is being given, the enthusiasm from cast and fans, and the cliffhanger endings for the characters, seems to be inevitable. Rumor is that filming starts in September '24, so fingers crossed.

It was a good show. I liked the episodes and the show thru the first season. They actually tried to make a Fallout show that was close to the original game. Many show adaptations of games can't seem to do that, or even close to it. Was it perfect, no nothing ever is. It was good and I give it a 7 out of 10.

Up to episode 6 so far and I've noticed that there's been a distinct lack of super mutants, radscorpions, or deathclaws so far.

I have a fond memories of Fallout 1&2 so I decided to give this one a chance, but couldn't make it through the first episode. Lackluster all around, got better things to do with my time.

I mean, the idea was never to do a one-and-done season. Leave some stuff to bring out for the second season, don't throw it all on the screen at once!

Besides, without spoiling too much... keep an eye out, one of your three will be making a cameo.

A supermutant did make a cameo. Remember that scene in the Enclave Remnant, where a sheet covered body was wheeled off? That wasnt a normal human hand.

Still haven't found time to watch through, but from the articles before it dropped, it sounds like the BoS patrols a big area, so presumably they keep most of that big dangerous stuff in check.

I hope deathclaws make it to the screen.  And I really hope they make it one of the scariest scenes on any type of mass media, since when you spot a deathclaw in the game it already knew you were there and you'd better be ready to fight like hell!

It occurs to me that a Deathclaw attack would be a perfect place to show off the Fatman.
