Just for the sakes of irony.  Here right now in Finland, it's a balmy 5c plus and raining.  Most
unusual for the time of the year, and I am certainly not inclined to complain.

With fuel injection on gas engines, you really don't need a block heater for most environments. Today was -12 and my old cavilere started right up.  Heck, even newer diseles don't need to be plugged in but for the very coldest weather.

Gentlemen, gentlemen...please!  We're three pages into this thread and we're already talking about the weather?  I'm aghast.

The wife and I are watching 'Brooklyn Nine-nine'.  Has anyone caught it?  If not, I highly recommend.

Also, my garage door continues suck.  It broke again, today.

Acolyte, nice weather report.

Watched it. It reminds me of 'Jake 2.0' but with a better backstory. Plus the human upgrade was intentional rather than accidental.

Jokes like that are a third of the zone chat in Star Trek Online. The rest is politics from people with too much time on their hands and game help.

I started watching Mythbusters on Netflix. The 2003 episodes are a bit different in structure. Glad they got rid of the woman explaining what they were going after.

This is a weird question, but you're by and large weird people, so this struck me as an appropriate place to ask: what was the Roman Army's stance on facial hair?  In the modern context, we think of military men as clean-shaven, but we also know that wasn't always the case (heck, I've sometimes wondered if possessing facial hair wasn't a practically requirement for promotion to the General Officer ranks in the American Civil War).  So, do we know if there were Centurions running about with full beards, goatees, and whatnot, or is that one of history's great mysteries?

My only reference for that is an Asterix comic, whereupon soldiers treated with a magical hair-growing potion were considered slovenly and borderline out of uniform when reporting to their superiors unshaven. That was rapidly ignored when everyone had such beards, could not shave them off fast enough, and grew large enough to have practical issues.

Of course, take that as reliably as you choose, given the source.

The styles varied over time but for the most part the Romans seem to have preferred to be clean shaven but later in the Empire they tended to have beards more but they were often trimmed beards rather than dangling down around their... belt buckles

I'd be lost without my beard, or disturbingly more youthful in appearance.

Once a year or so it all goes, just to give the better half a holiday from bristly kisses.  I admit
i cannot think of Roman soldiers, without thinking of them clean shaven.  I'll chalk that up to
Asterix too, though my memory is too poor to recall it in any historic fiction.  Not that it's my
period, but I did read The Eagle of the Ninth as a lad.

I so didn't think of you with a beard.
This is a weird question, but you're by and large weird people, so this struck me as an appropriate place to ask:
May I quote you on that?  It is the BT equivalent of me saying that "every Marine Officer is by definition eccentric".

I can't answer your question.  My only point of reference is a couple of St. Petersburg Collection miniatures I've purchased.  They are in my office downstairs and I'm not inclined to leave my couch/scotch to conduct a facial hair review of miniatures.  Actually, it is more the couch since the scotch is portable and the refills for which are at the top of the stairs leading to my office.  Speaking of which I'm out of scotch...

No, and no.

To answer you question, AW, I'm going with "It depended on the time period." An exception is Hadrian, who was bearded to cover scarring.

Apologies for bringing actual Battletech into this thread(;)), but I'm working up a Battleforce game for my group to try out and could use some help. I'm using the RATs to generate both sides, and while I've rolled up all the actual 'mechs for my Regulan battalion, I need help grouping the 'mechs into lances. I'm looking to end up with 1 assault lance, 4 each of heavy and medium lances, and 1 light lance. Here's what I rolled up, using the 3145 RATs:

Goliath-6M
Goliath-6M
Longbow-13C
Neanderthal-AG
Ostwar-3M
Ostwar-3M
Patriot-2D
Patriot-2D
Patriot-2D
Wendigo B
Hercules-9000
Hercules-9000
Pandarus-1A
Pandarus-1A
Scourge-WF1
Scourge-WF1
Scourge-WF1
Archer-9M
Orion 3-M
Rifleman IIC-8
Phoenix Hawk-1c
Trebuchet-3C
Shadow Hawk IIC 8
Shadow Hawk IIC 8
Shadow Hawk IIC 8
Sarath Prime
Sarath Prime
Sarath B
Strider D
Strider X
Griffin-4R
Griffin-4R
Locust-5W2
Wight-3SC
Wight-3SC
Wight-3SC
Havoc-P6

Without swapping anything out for anything else or chaning any variants/configs, how would you group these?

Thanks!

Group them by speed and weight class Weirdo. That is what I do.

By grouping by speed, there is some cohesion when the lances are moved.

Speed is always my key factor in grouping units, except for certain mechs that fill a more dedicated role, like fire support, I try and keep everything in a lance moving at very near the same speed

I do the opposite.  I try to come up with lances that can win a  fight on a 2x1 map against another lance of similar total weight.  That usually means a mix of mediums and lights with a heavy as anchor.  If I wind up in a larger fight, just mass the mechs and find a good spot on the map to attack or defend.

On a different note(still gaming, but with 50% more Davion!), what would be good names for a trio of 3145-era AFFS DropShips? I'm needing names for a Colossus and a pair of Arondights.

The RN always has the best names. I ended up using Illustrious and Enterprise for the Arondights, and the Colossus will be Kilbourne, after a world in the Periphery March.

(Similarly, I'm using past and present ANZAC ship names for my RotS stuff.)

Probably showing that I'm not more history buff than Trekkie here, but I use Enterprise exclusively for carriers.  Just doesn't look right for me when I see a ship with no fighters calling itself Enterprise.

That particular heritage is reserved for SLS Enterprise, which I'll hopefully paint after this current set of commissions is done(note that that ship is also a proper starship, being jump-capable 8)). FSS Enterprise refers to the various British ships by that name, and will actually be given to a mini I bought from a CSO artist.

Yes, the Royal Navy does have far better names than almost anyone else although some of the best are actually French or Spanish (Temeraire and Spitfire for example). There is a pretty complete list on Wikipedia.

On a completely unrelated note, I just found out I got a distinction (73%) in my first essay of my Masters in Medical Leadership  :)  Next module starts next week but is on the uninspiring topic of Human Resource Management  :'(
