VTOL Transports & Battle Armor
« on: 09 September 2024, 11:04:20 »
I'm a bit confused. On ASCE p39, it says, "A transport carrying mechanized battle armor may not go airborne or use WiGE, VTOL, submersible, or aerospace (thrust) movement." However, checking the MUL, they have the Onuris Attack VTOL with OMNI.

My understanding is that all battle armor with MEC or XMEC are "mechanized". So, either the unit is wrong or the rule is wrong. Please help!

It's not wrong, as there are other reasons that a unit is Omni other than carrying Battle Armor.  The primary reason is the (relatively) easy changing of equipment in a unit.  Carrying Battle Armor technically came later.

If this was classic BattleTech stats, I would agree. But this is alpha strike rules and an alpha strike unit card. OMNI only has the effect of allowing battle armor with MEC to mount them externally.

All Alpha Strike units are converted from classic stats. The unit is an omnivehicle, so it gets the Omni special.

Agreed and understood they're converted from Classic stats. But the ability is for Alpha Strike. If a unit cannot use the ability by virtue of the rules, then the unit should not have the ability listed on the card.

This is the reason why units with Artemis IV do not have the LRM/SRM ability because they cannot use alternate ammunition. If it was just a straight conversion, they would have an LRM/SRM value even though they are using Artemis.

Are there any other omni VTOLs in classic? If so, and they aren't listed in the MUL with the ability, then the issue is that the Onuris is wrong and should have OMNI removed.

On performing additional filters/searches on the MUL, it appears that the Onuris is in the OmniVehicles list. If you do a search for the subtype of VTOL, it is not in that list. So, I think the issue is that it was misclassified. I'll follow up with the Erata page.

It's not misclassified. The Onuris is the first Omni VTOL in the game.

Sorry, but it's the same situation with Classic/Total Warfare rules, both with the Omni classification and the inability to fly while Battle Armor is Mechanized on outside.  On the table, be it AS or TW, being an Omni unit means nothing other than Mechanizing Battle Armor.

Before and after the table, though, it does allow for that type of customization or unit swap out.  There's even some places that only allow customization for Omni units (not many, but still).
