Capitol class Space Defense Station (Republic(?))
« on: 19 August 2024, 18:20:24 »
An updated version of the Capitol class Space Defense Platform for use by the Republic of the Sphere, or rather a variation of the Republic of the Sphere. The canon republic might leave off at least certain features from their own version.

The single naval laser and naval autocannon on each facing of the original has been replaced with quad mounted sub-capital lasers and sub-capital missiles, with just... so many missiles in the magazines so that it's an actual threat to an enemy that just decides not to approach it. Close in weapons have been updated and consolidated mostly to make space for an anti missile system. Better armor was used. Other special equipment has been added to work better with certain types of supporting units.

(try to ignore how giving it a KF adapter basically tripled its cost)

Good news is the lab boys say the symptoms of asbestos poisoning show an immediate latency of 44.6 years. So if you're thirty or over you're laughing. Worst case scenario you miss out on a few rounds of canasta, plus you've forwarded the cause of science by three centuries. I punch those numbers into my calculator, it makes a happy face.

Question: is that Capital armor or standard? I don’t know anything about station building other than they have crunchy insides

Ferro-Carbide armor is Capital grade Armor

The SB Gauss seems to have the wrong damage.
It should only be 9x2 for 18 total.

Given there is no bonus for "Flak" in space, I'd probably change them over to basic Gauss & for that matter basic LPL/LRM & not pay the new tech price tag $$.

I miss the loss of Cap-Extreme for an immobile station.
Wondering if dropping the Cap AC for more Cap-NLs for a proper "Bay" of them might have been a better option in terms of range/accuracy.

Does the RotS keep using Caspar Drones?   Is there a reason for ARTS bays?

Either way I feel like the 10 Boarder Fleets should all have 1 of these w/ a Tug & a JS modified to carry it.

Would it be cheaper to drop the KF boom and make it modular, using old Conestogas to move it?

Modularity is hugely expensive.

The Casper technology was shelved after Operation Scorch.   ARTS aren't about handling the exclusively drones, it's automating the hangar bays (fighters, smallcraft etc) it cuts down the personal requirements.  The Ghost Bears use them in their Leviathan III Battleship

Modularity is hugely expensive.

More expensive than KF booms, or is it hugely expensive because each piece is assumed to have a boom?

IO, page 217 has a x50 multiplier for Modular Space Stations.  This replaces the x20 for a Jump-capable station under 100,000 tons.

In the setting this is intended for, yes.

In canon... maybe? Interstellar operations mentions that the Republic had rediscovered Shielded SRCS and that "once again drones defended republic worlds" or words to that affect. I think recovering old Blakist drone tech was also a subplot in Surrender Your Dreams.

But when the time came to show off the defenses of the Republic, there was no mention of drones aside from the occasional remote drone battlemech.

So whether the writers did an abrupt one eighty on that plot thread or just decided not to dedicate ink to specifically depicting robotic drones over Terra, I can't say.

More expensive than KF booms, or is it hugely expensive because each piece is assumed to have a boom?

I think it's just hugely expensive because... umm... actually I have no idea what the reasoning behind a lot of cost calculations are.
