Red on black?
« on: 09 November 2020, 04:21:44 »
Hello there
I was about to start painting my minis wehen I discovered that I ran pout of white primer. So I used black on some test minis to paint minis in a classic black-red scheme.

And now the red does not cover well directly over black (old GW paints). Any tips on how to make the red cover without making a lot of red paint layers? Thx

Put a coat of grey or cream over the black, and then red over that coat.  P3 Jack Bone (and presumably whatever the new equivalent of Bleached Bone is) covers dark colours really well and in turn doesn't bleed through light colours

Thought so. Thanks! Will check what paints I have in those ranges and play with them. Thanks!

I tend to use Army Painter Dragon Red primer and then paint the black.

If you are using black primer I would use a midrange brown as a first coat.

Put a coat of grey or cream over the black, and then red over that coat.
+1
I've used a medium to light gray undercoat and it works very well.

The reason red doesn't go over black well is because red is one of the more translucent colors (meaning that the layer under it will be more apparent) and because the vast majority of blacks are actually a very dark blue, which will shift the red.

To that end all the advice about using other colors over blue are good, Browns are great if you want a truer red

Citadel has a base grey called Grey Seer that works really well for this.  I use it all the time to add red, yellow, or white over a black primer or a basecoat.

Same advice as above. Use a foundation color between the red and black.
The color you choose will effect the red outcome. Medium brown (like flat earth or beast fur colors) will make a richer, deeper red. Bone, off white, light grey, will make a brighter red with more "pop", but
I've found that the red paints sometimes need more than one coat over the lighter tones as well.
The same trick works well for metallic trim over black; browns for gold and greys for silver.

Ok. I Will try one test model in each scheme and see what happens. Thanks!
