I've been working on building up a new FLWM unit for awhile now and am looking to get some feedback from people who are more knowledgeable than myself when it comes to the FLWM and Battletech in general.
I'm really looking for feedback on unit selections and the formation as a whole. Obviously I want this to be an effective fighting force, but I also really want to capture the "feel" of running a FLWM unit. I am open to suggestions and criticisms on every aspect of this list and welcome all of it. If you guys have any ideas for different units or lance compositions please feel free to let me know. If you'd like to me elaborate on why I chose what I did, or would like me to explain my mindset behind making a particular choice or how I intend to use something I would also be more than happy to dive into the nitty gritty.
It's taken me quite awhile to shape this force and have scrapped it a few times to start over fresh. I finally got it to a place where I'm pretty happy with it and want to see what the community thinks.
So without further ado here it is!

Very nice over all, but I think the Panthers in the third company are hampering its maneuverability. I recommend replacing them with something that moves 5/8 and jumps. One way to get there would be to swap in a Phoenix Hawk for the Shadow Hawk for the third lance, freeing it up to replace the Panther in the first lance (and also speeds up the third). Have you looked at the jumping variant of the Trebuchet? That would be a good one to replace the second Panther.
-
I agree on replacing the Panthers. Since you have Kurita mechs, how about replacing them with Valkyrie's?

I think that’s a good idea, I went ahead and updated the list in my first post. I did leave one of the Panthers in the Cavalry lance just because I’m a really big Panther fan. But I went ahead and swapped the Shadow Hawk for a Phoenix Hawk and then swapped the Shadow Hawk with the Griffin and added another Trebuchet. Also, all of the Trebuchets in the 3rd company are all the JJ variant.

I like this idea, and am a fan of the Valkyrie, but I currently don’t like the ones produced by IWM. I am a fan of the new plastic model but I don’t like mixing metal and plastic minis in the same force. If they ever come out with the new sculpt in metal than I very well may make that switch.
-
Hmmm... slowing down your Cavalry Lance to 4/6/4 isn't the best, but I don't see any better place for a Panther in the force. If you like it, go for it!
-
I’m inclined to agree with you, but I was planning on having the Panther stay towards the rear and act as a sniper so hopefully the slower movement won’t be too much of an issue
-
It's only an issue above single engagements. It's the moving between them that makes 4/6/4 not so hot...
-
After thinking it over for awhile I went ahead and switch out the Panther with a Griffin, I think it will be more useful overall.
-
Nice!
-
overall a nice force
but for Atlas bodyguards, I would swap
one hunchie to the 4P
yes its a favorite for me, but that lance still has 2AC20s,
and being able to drop 8 mediums on a target is very convincing
-
Yes, yes it is... ^-^

Nice unit... a bit of nit-pickin':
FWLM uses 5 tank platoons...
I'm not called truetanker for just a handle...
I'd add an Ontos or two, mabe one each LRM and Standard to the 3 Schreks. Also we're told that the Harasser units work well with Galleons, so maybe drop one for a pair? And upgrade a Harasser to the Medium Laser variant. Which also looks like your missing an LRM Scorpion or two... rest looks neat.
Oh and I'd swap the Atlas for the Battlemaster, that way the same speed class...

the only FWL formation variant i knew of was the long platoon of six tanks (ER3052 pg 36)... i remember it being mentioned before before but i forget the source. was there a source for the five platoon setup?
-
That is a different setup. Is there a canon quote that supports the 5 tanks per platoon somewhere? Just curious for my own builds later on.
-
Yes it means I’ll have to buy more tanks
-
Field Manual : Marik
Since the old 3025 TRO...
Tanks of five in heavy units.

but I also really want to capture the "feel" of running a FLWM unit.
The FWL was supposed to be perpetually short on PPCs during the drawn out fighting of the 3rd Succession, the Awesome would often be the 8T or 8R which were variants to deal with this just like the Marauder-3M. They also have a lot being the sole manufacturer, should one of the Stalkers and/or Longbow be replaced maybe? Perhaps 1 PPC Awesome and 1-2 missile boat Awesomes? And by that same token the Shrecks carrying so many PPC should also be replaced. Also the FWL armor platoons were 6 vehicles not 4.
-
And a Schreck only needs to give up a half ton of armor for the 32nd heat sink. It gets one ton back from going to four Large Lasers, and a half ton from the turret being lighter.
-
That's a good trade if there was a large laser version of the Schrek.
-
As a 75 ton tank, I think Fractional Accounting might just get it the other half ton without having to dip into armor.
-
Technically the LL version Schrek would be a custom design, canonically the Autocannon Schrek with it's 3 AC/5's would have been used. I personally would use a Partisan, including the LRM variant.
And further assigning these with an LRM Ontos to insure a minimum weapons bubble that can cover retreats to the next ridge! Even nastier is assigning a Demolisher / Devastator / Onto to this unit, only thing is do you want more LRM or AC fire?
I'd run an Ontos, two LRM Partisan and paired Partisans in my units!
130 LRMs, of which 120 are in a TU, some MG's for Anti-Infantry work ( 4 ) and enough ML ( 8 ) and AC/5 ( 8 ) fire to cover any range, all at a 3/5 speed bump!
Now think about this : Partisan AC/5 = 670 vs. Schrek AC/5 = with no known BV2 number.
