Background - Originally designed to be a low observability insertion vehicle based on the Lyonesse escort gunship for ROM the Charybdis proved ineffective as formerly Lostech sensors were being restored through the use of the Helm Data Core. This role as special operations transport was instead transferred to the Vampire despite its limitations.

Unwilling to scrap the prototypes, due to COMSTAR dogma and Phi Branch's influence, it would take until the early 3040s before the Charybdis would find a new role. The small craft's more efficient engines, open layout, good armor, adequate weapons, and ample fuel tank made it a natural as a system patrol drone and Omega branch saw potential in the discarded machines.

It took a year before Charybdis' first deployment in its CAS/II configuration which was around Venus in service to the M-9 Pavise station 'Aphrodite's Mirror' as a proof of concept where it served as the test bed for the DTAC control system. Following two years of testing OMEGA had simplified the computer systems and removed the testing equipment freeing enough space to wire a booby trap that would remotely destroy the drone in order to protect CASPAR's secrets should it be critically damaged.

Description and History - The Dante series of Frigates were originally developed in the late 30th Century by then Primus Hollings York, the founder of the modern Comstar Guards and Militia. They are versatile designs meant to serve as the workhorse designs for COMSTAR's 'Great White Fleet' and rebuild skills left to atrophy during the Succession Wars among Titan Yards Shipwrights. Primus Julian Tiepolo foreseeing the threat that the recovery of the Grey Death Core could pose to the order reactivated the Warship slips in the Titan Yards although work was still underway when he died and Primus Myndo Waterly came into power in 3029. Primus Waterly invested massive sums of COMSTAR capital into the Yards which had been hit hard when Primus York's ambitious Warship program was cancelled by his successor Adrienne Sims in favor of her Explorer Corps.

With a powerful complement of weapons, abundant cargo bays, three Level IIs of spacecraft, a Lithium Fusion battery, mobile HPG, and advanced Sensor Suite it fully leverages the Blessed Order’s technological edge but at a ruinous expense of almost 17 billion c-bills that has given Phi branch no end of nightmares. Due to the impending completion of the dozen ship line in 3052 most of the Dantes were kept around Sol while their crews were trained and investments made to expand the Titan Yards for its successor, a more economical Essex II type clone, and a potential cruiser in the 800 kiloton range better equipped to combat the threat of a potential future Great House fleet.

Weapon and Equipment – The dominant firepower of a Dante is its dozen Scarsbough 30 NAC/30s. A pair of Armstrong II NAC/35s dominate the nose, two quad Sorenstein-45a Naval Lasers point fore and aft, a trio of Medium NPPCs point aft providing a way to deter pursuit, Triple Medium SCC, and Swordfish sub-capital turrets augment the standard weapons scattered throughout the hull for Anti-Aerospace defense. Most of the capital weapons were refurbished from SLDF hulks in COMSTAR’s ghost fleet.
 
Making up most of a Dante’s cost are its advanced non-combat systems, a Lithium Fusion battery gives it the ability to quickly conduct a double jump, the mobile HPG and Naval Comm-Scanner suite are operated by a dedicated and specialized crew of Adepts. These three features give a Dante and any jumpships it is protecting unparalleled connectivity with the Inner Sphere spanning HPG network and provides warning against hostile incursions.

Cargo and Carry – With slightly more than 30 kilotons of cargo capacity (enough to carry 2 Jumbos, the dropship not just the cargo) and 2 dropship hardpoints a Dante can serve as a mobile resupply base for any COMGuard unit it is assigned to support and can stay on patrol for months if stocked with appropriate parts and food.

This gives COMSTAR the ability to almost match their progenitor SLDF in strategic capability for their level IVs. Like the SLDF COMSTAR divides the Inner Sphere into clocks and it was their intention to assign a Dante to their Divisions (or Level IVs) that would serve as the quick reaction force for that sector. Difficulties in recruiting and training enough soldiers to build these Divisions slowed the Order’s ability to deploy them, particularly after the Capellan Civil War put away any ‘need’ to ‘ensure the Order’s security.’

Two Level IIs of Aerospace Fighters are kept ready to deploy at any time and one Level II of Gunships could deploy Marine detachments for security or Search & Rescue craft for emergencies.

Accommodations – A Dante serves multiple roles and thus has a need for a diverse array of onboard personnel. Each crewmen sleeps in their own bed in a double occupancy room, preferably on the opposite shift of their room mate so they enjoy privacy. There are 2 Grav Decks and while the fighters and gunship crews have their own rooms built into their bays there is room for another 23 passengers and enough escape pods for everyone. This is good for morale even if it is perhaps a hopelessly optimistic luxury.

Description and History - Faslane Yardships can occupy almost three times the volume of the much denser Dante due to its unpressurized cagework which can expand enough to accommodate a Dreadnought Battleship. In its collapsed form however it takes up a more reasonable volume which allowed Titan Yards to use a similarly sized cage. Commissioned by Primus Andrea Marteen as a jobs program the original Faslane was envisioned to be the first part in a growing fleet that could bring back the glory days of the Terran Hegemony. Eventually renamed the CS Terra it was crewed by staff from the Titan Yards and used for constructing space habitats within the Sol and Tau Ceti systems.

The sixth Faslane CS Dieron was finished in 2947 during the reign of Primus Hollings York who like Marteen believed they would serve as a lynchpin of COMSTAR's power projection. However, Phi branch forced him to compromise as upgrades to Titan Yards to expand production would require a politically untenable increase in transmission rates in order to finance their construction during the low ebb of the Third Succession War. The same slip in Titan Shipyards was used to produce the Dante but only three of these hulls were completed before the project was shutdown by his successor. Primus Adrienne Sims' Explorer Corps saw the first deployment of the Faslanes outside COMSTAR controlled space but they were expensive to maintain so the first four were mothballed and only the Tharkad and Dieron were rotated through Columbus and other Deep Periphery systems.

The Tharkad and Dieron were the last to undergo modernization under Primus Julien Tiepolo but they like the other Faslanes were utilized by COMSTAR salvage operations on the SLDF Ghost Fleet. In 3051 with their salvage operations complete the Faslanes were deployed to the Periphery States as they lack shipyards to service their jumpship fleets and most Great Houses have long backlogs. Two of these are rotated regularly back to Tau Ceti and Sol in order to rest crews and conduct intensive repairs.

Weapons and Equipment - Faslanes while mostly functioning as civilian vessels are not unarmed as they are valuable prizes for any faction to capture. Each arc possesses triple turrets of NL/35s, SL/2s, and quad turrets of large lasers. This along with its armoring is enough to dissuade any attempts to damage or board the vessel.

While the original Faslanes were equipped with larger repair bays the 3030s upgrades reduced the size of the bay to merely 1 Megaton using the reduced mass for other purposes. This still allows a single Faslane to simultaneously service multiple jumpships or the largest Warship designed by Titan Yards.

Cargo and Carry - Two Level IIs of small craft provide cargo service or security to the vessel which lacks any dropship collars of its own. Seven kilotons of fuel provide long endurance which is particularly useful for missions in support to the Explorer Corps. Slightly more than 150 kilotons of cargo or almost a third of the vessel's mass is dedicated to sustaining its large crews, associated orbital infrastructure, or storing spare parts, machinery, and subcomponents meant to be used by the repair yard.

Accommodations - The Faslanes started the habit of lavish accommodations and enough life boats for the onboard personnel. Two large grav decks provide plenty of options for entertainment and dining with racquetball being a popular past-time for the 90 Shipwrights, 150 Shuttle Crew, and 209 Ship's Crew. Portions of its large cargo bay are commonly converted to zero-g sports stadiums for the predominantly Belter crews.

Backstory - While many McKenna battleships were included in the Exodus Fleet over the centuries only one remains, formerly the ship now known as the McKenna's Pride was the CMS Cage's Pride and served as the Clan Mongoose Flagship during their battle against Clan Smoke Jaguar (responsible for the destruction of the CSJ Obsidian) over Circe. Critically damaged in the fight it nevertheless was preserved around Shadow as a monument to Mongoose's stellar prowess but never returned to service. When Clan Wolf went 'rogue' they took the original McKenna's Pride from around Strana Mechty and used it against a Clan Star Adder Task Force led by CSA Sovereign Right (a fellow McKenna). The resulting battle destroyed both task forces and thus SLS McKenna's Pride and the Great Father's body with it. This 'heresy' was one of the last in the Wolf War and it ended shortly after.

CMS Cage's Pride was thus left as the last McKenna and was renamed the McKenna's Pride when reactivated by ilKhan Leo Showers after years in the cageworks around Shadow.

Description - The most obvious modifications of the McKenna's Pride are the loss of its massive and rarely used NAC/40 cannons replaced by quad NAC/35s, the addition of a fourth gravdeck and expansion of others, communications arrays, and numerous anti-aerospace and missile systems. The internal changes however are more subtle including a slight reinforcement in its structure. Knowing full well that the McKenna's Pride would be a command vessel the shipwrights added a 50 bed medical facility, more berthing for support personnel including Espatiers, expanded the shuttle and fighter bays to 125 units from 66 with a subsequent increase in fuel bunkerage, modified the cargo bays to store 5 kilotons of refrigerated stores (almost a years worth for its crew), 50 kilotons of water, and almost 184 kilotons of miscellaneous stores.

Background - The original OAS Barbarossa was an Outworlds Alliance privateer and smuggler operating during the Reunification War with more armor, reinforced structure, enhanced power plants, different weapon layouts, and a shuttle hanger accounting for its almost 50% higher purchase price. It is based on the Cargomaster fuselage originally manufactured by Federated-Boeing Interstellar. Presently Outworlds Orbital Assembly on Onverwacht continue to manufacture the original model and Barbarossa upgrades to supply the Alliance's privateer and trade fleets although their production volume is very low with three constructed every two standard years (typically only 1 of those is the Barbarossa package).

They are frequently hired out by the Federated Suns to hunt pirate motherships that raid the Outback or raid Draconis Combine commercial traffic. Although its cargo bay is smaller for its contemporary civilian counterpart 4.5 kilotons is enough to give it the option of engaging in commercially viable trade as well as providing supplies for extended cruises and loot. Additional berthing is provided for prize crews and prisoners plus the platoon of attached Espatiers. Its shuttle bays provide the Captain with a less risky option for boarding vessels or mobility while on world or in orbit.

History- After its unceremonious decommissioning the SLS Enterprise was towed to Ceres to be scrapped. The Ceres Council opted to remove most of the boondoggles' more expensive technologies before replacing them with cargo space. This reduction lightened it enough that the thrusters would not be stressed during operations, however it was mostly used as a large fusion reactor to increase power for their colony. They kept most of the structure intact using the massive vessel as a prison barge/cargo warehouse/industrial ship during the intervening decades. During their short lived revolution against Primus Jerome Blake's new COMSTAR's OP:SILVER SHIELD in the Fall of 2788 the people of Ceres fought hard against General Lauren Hayes' COMGuards and Jovian Imperial Espatiers within its corridors and their home planetoid. After COMSTAR put down the revolution they evacuated the colony before turning it into a research station for experiments deemed to hazardous for Mars but requiring regular oversight.

The SLS Enterprise and Ceres Station were regularly repaired and intermittently occupied by COMSTAR throughout the years until Primus Andrea Marteen restarted Warship construction around Titan with the Faslanes. Titan Yards used the preserved Enterprise as a training vessel in order to relearn the necessary technologies after more than a hundred years of decay. Once the six Faslanes were completed, some budget remained so the Enterprise's power plant and thrusters were upgraded to regain intra-system mobility. However, it was mothballed around Ceres along with four of the six Faslanes with only caretaker crews from Krupp Stellar Technologies on Deimos visiting to ensure it could be reactivated if necessary to defend Terra during the Succession Wars.

With Primus Julian Tiepolo's interest in Warships the Enterprise was once more brought out of mothballs from its cage around Ceres by crews from Krupp. It disappeared from the Naval Reserve in 3035, at the same time the Jovian Empire observed a massive increase in ship traffic between Mars and Ceres, traveling in radio silence. Additionally the Enterprise's cage was expanded and Ceres' thermal emissions dramatically increased showing clear signs of industrial activity. When it was eventually removed in 3050 the Enterprise was significantly larger and better armed but just as mysterious.

Mysterious enough that Emperor Baldric VI asked Primus Waterly what had been done to it, and asked her to clarify her intentions.

Her response was, "I have no control over what The Word of Blake does. It is in the hands of The Master."

Background - The Bullfrog was a common sight during humanity's early disputes with the Terran Hegemony as the THAF required air cover to support their conventional forces during the Demarcation Declaration and other rebellions. This jump jet was capable of short take off and landing in support of firebases with its light payload. The addition of bombs requires it take off more conventionally as its thrusters while powerful cannot reliably overcome the additional mass. Nevertheless it saw service on many colonial worlds and its adjustments would later go on to be incorporated into Aerospace Fighters. Once these fighters and their advanced engines became more common during the Reunification War the THAF started to transition toward them. These jump jets would see continued use in various territorial regiments until their eventual retirement in the mid-2600s.

However, COMSTAR reintroduced the Bullfrog Jump Jet as ROM found them as useful trainers for Aerospace Pilots suitable for patrolling large areas and dealing with bandit groups that might be threatening their enclaves on periphery worlds. NETC increased production of the fighters which competed against the Guardian Jump Jet after witnessed 'Mercenary' Pilots handling hostile forces on their worlds with them. The fact that they easily can be broken down and placed in a medium weight ergonomic container helped with their distribution within COMSTAR's White Star Dropship lines.

Variants - There are two variants of the Bullfrog, one swaps the LRM-5s to SRM-4s, while the other replaces them with 5 Rocket Launcher/15s allowing a stronger one hit strike than the others.

Hanse Davion somehow manages to continue thwarting our Order’s efforts even though he is no longer First Prince. His son First Prince Ian Davion have authorized a major investment in state funds to expand that world’s groundside assembly plants in Auburn and orbital cageworks above. Ostensibly for ‘expanding production of Star Lord Jumpships’ according to Federated Boeing and Universal Air.

Our sources say otherwise though, the Wolf’s Dragoons flotilla of Star League era Warships have been tracked in system through our observation satellites and indirectly via contacts with knowledge on the matter. This close cooperation threatens our own monopoly on void warship fleets and could be the prelude to a new offensive against the Draconis Combine. We should continue watching them carefully and see what we can discern through remote sensing and interrogation of their supply chains.

After extensive evaluation within the McKenna Yards Universal Air and Federated Boeing-Interstellar believe they can revitalize our warship fleet. While we attempted to maintain them in reasonable condition the fuselages are ancient, their crews are operating on third-hand training, and we cannot push either very far without risking catastrophe. Thus, we must address these problems as well as the fact that our present war stores have also depleted. Without access to resupply from HOME we require their efforts despite the security risk. We will need to be in peak condition when THEY ARRIVE.

To prepare ourselves Orbital Operations Group have prepared a list of modifications they feel are needed to restore the flotilla to fighting shape within our technical limits. Many of these relate to more numerous living quarters for onboard damage control and repair teams plus Espatiers to protect them, increased Aerospace Fighter and Gunship contingents, a consolidation of capital weapon types, enlarging or adding secondary Anti-Fighter weaponry and point defense.

Background - The Asteria and its many sisters are the Clan's standard heavy carrier (based on the Titan) whilst the Legend (Carrier) are the light one (based on the Black Eagle). Capable of carrying and supporting a Binary of Fighters most of these are tasked with independent convoy escort and station security. Each of the twenty fighters has two dedicated pilots and almost 90 tons of dedicated cargo and there are 60 Technicians on hand to repair and service them. Unfortunately having 126 personnel onboard makes for a crowded craft, although only a third of them are commonly on-duty at any one time.

Even with almost a tenth of its mass in fuel that only provides enough fuel for an independent cruise of about 2 standard months at which point both the ship and crew are typically rotated out for a month. When operating as part of a Warship fleet many of the technicians can be off-boarded to live aboard the larger ships. To keep up morale the crew of an Asterion are given plenty of stores including B12 rich algae ice 'cream.'

Background - The Imaoka is one of the smallest missile ships in Clan service and because of this and its shallow missile magazines it is mostly used for convoy escort, orbital bombardment, or surface-to-surface missile support. A pair of Barracuda missile tubes in the nose provide solid Anti-Aerospace firepower but the pair of teleoperated Killer Whales are more commonly used as they allow the ship to maintain a longer stand-off distance from any threat. Despite being a smaller ship it remains a popular posting for Espatiers as the crew is more likely to land on a planet and see action there than many other combat spacecraft in the Clan's Fleets.

Tale of Two Tomahawks

The Tomahawk Aerospace Fighter was one of the more common medium fighter designs used by the Star League during its prime. Within the SLDF it served as Fleet Interceptors and fast Strike Craft. Fast, tough, maneuverable, and relatively inexpensive it would later become a prized design within the Clans where it also formed the foundation for the Ogotai Omnifighter and COMSTAR who inherited the damaged factories around Mars.

These damaged factories operated intermittently throughout the Blessed Order's history to restock worn out fuselages and stockpile spare parts for COMSTAR. Only when the Titan Yards were operating at peak efficiency throughout the 3030-3050s were these factories repaired and new Tomahawk's were being produced every year for Delta Branch. In the later part of the 3050s this was increased to nearly 60 per annum as workforce and supply chains were bolstered by Primus Waterly.

Since both of these designs were familiar with the technicians within those units they were adjusted and optimized for the typical 'Joust' (passing each other at high speed) or 'Sumo' (flipped and firing while moving at steady rate) positional dogfights that Aerospace fighters engage in.

Background - The Batu was designed by the same Clan that thought the Goshawk as a 55-tonner could be better as a 45 tonner while allowing them to show off their piloting skill. Designed as a lighter version of the Ogotai long favored by the Vipers for its lightweight fuselage and aggressive lines. Considered to be one of the best looking Aerospace Fighter silhouettes among the Clan Fleet the Steel Vipers have taken more than a little pride in using them for overflights of their Enclaves and flying in tighter than regulation and borderline dangerous formation with the dropships of other Clans. Background - The Cargomaster's large and partially auto-loading cargo bays have long served as the Clan's default medium freighter. It was thus easily available and since large cylinders were already built in Clan Star Adder saw military potential in replacing those with Capital missile launchers and magazines for their unending war with Clan Mongoose. The Huntsman is known as an Arsenal Ship because it is capable of, and frequently carries the full range of Nuclear Weapons available to the SLDF-in-Exile. These weapons are principally meant to fight Warships or massed assault dropship formations in orbit with a secondary function as Surface-to-Surface or Surface-to-Air missile launchers (although rarely with nuclear weapons). Only during times of great crisis such as the Scorpion Plague have they ever been used for strategic orbital bombardment, most infamously during the Immolation of Sandtown on Marshall.

The Huntsman despite having fairly deep magazines is still limited by its mass compared to a Warship. The three AR-10 launchers have ten missiles of each weight class and a provision in place for a max load of 24 50kt Strix and 24 500kt Phoenix Missiles. These nuclear tipped missiles are commonly replaced by additional standard missiles if the threat level is low. The preference is for Barracuda Interceptor missiles meant to damage or shoot down Aerospace fighters from the surface or Killer Whales for use in Surface-to-Surface bombardment. Only during an elevated Large Craft threat (such as COMSTAR's supposedly immense fleet or an active fight against Mongoose) are additional White Shark missiles loaded into the magazine as they have greater armor-piercing capability and carry a Strix warhead which is the standard for Anti-Warship engagements.

It's small hanger bay it is mostly meant as a transfer station for 'Dauntless' half-kiloton air launched cruise missiles or 'Athos' 5-kiloton glide bombs. Twenty Marines are responsible for the security and handling of these strategic assets and a ten person Armament team is on hand to maintain and offer recommendations to field commanders on the most appropriate weapon choices based on battlefield situations. The 1800 ton cargo bay is mostly used as extra storage for replenishment of smaller missile boats or for storing air-delivered ordnance.

Background - During the Wolf War the Aggressor Clans found their Jumpships and Carrack transports harassed or destroyed by the formidable Wolf Fleet commanded by Admiral Grant McTighe who had declared unrestricted warfare against his foes. The length of the campaign against the Wolves allowed the Nova Foxes to adjust a Carrack the SLS Coriolis which was being built above Strato Domingo by the well-defended NewGrange Yardship SLS Singapore. SLS Singapore despite its defenses was unfortunately destroyed during one of the final battles against McTighe ending the NewGrange class.

As the first ship of its issue the Coriolis class Corvette was meant to perform as a Q-Ship of sorts, luring Wolf Fighter Carriers or Arsenal Ships near before surprising them with a sudden onslaught of Anti-Fighter weaponry. It would then turn to destroy or capture their carriers and associated Jumpships using its 4g of Acceleration and carried prize crews to claim them.

After the War the remaining 6 Clans would all operate at least one of these vessels (Nova Fox, Hell's Horses, and Star Adder have 2 for a total of 10). While not useful in a Warship Line of Battle Coriolis Corvettes provide a stout defense against the most common type of space enemy and carry a payload large enough to maintain a planetary invasion for a short time. The Scientist Caste strangely has assigned the ship names based on scientific phenomena and the Warrior Caste's only complaint was that they were sometimes hard to pronounce.
