The Art of Food
« on: 04 July 2024, 12:19:40 »
Anyone else on the KS read this yet? I went through it and Wolf’s annotated Art of War last night. Loved some of the recipes, and loved the commentary even more. Been getting a few game-related cookbooks (picked up the Final Fantasy XIV one a few months ago). Anyone wanting to try some of the recipes? Any favorite comments? I found the one of the Ghost Bear warrior saying making a perfect French bread loaf being akin to a Great Work rather amusing. Yes, bread can be a little tricky at first, but seriously?

I tried to run through all the mixed drinks, but midway through I mysteriously woke up in a hospital bed.

I'll have to try a few when I'm off work.  I'll also super interested in the caracara orange, will have to wait til winter apparently before I can try them fresh.  Wonder if normal or age juice and strawberry juice would suffice now for naranji.

Interesting question indeed. I think cooking is something that few people would be interested in. However, good energy-boosting foods you can share.

No, but frankly I was baffled they included it to begin with.

I was honestly just going to flip through the PDF to see if they used the same "Battletech Mixed Drinks" that have been circulating on the internet since I got into the hobby almost 30 years ago, now and then likely never look at it again.

I'm very "hunt and peck" with my recipes as-is; I learn to cook one thing at a time, try and master that and then move on. Add to that food has never been a part of the hobby for me in that sense and it's a big meh.
Epitaph on an Army of Mercenaries

These, in the day when heaven was falling,      Their shoulders held the sky suspended;
The hour when earth's foundations fled,         They stood, and earth's foundations stay;
Followed their mercenary calling,               What God abandoned, these defended,
And took their wages, and are dead.             And saved the sum of things for pay.

I'm not much of a cook but the commentary on the recipes is fun. I'll see how the Clan Cakes compare to the family pancake recipe, and my wife will definitely be more indulgent of my BattleTech expenses if I whip up a bunch of the drinks for us.

I hope folks dig the recipes I contributed.  They're all things my wife and I make pretty regularly (I just had one of them for dinner tonight, in fact), and I tried to make 'em pretty approachable while also offering a few tweaks/options/add-ons we enjoy.

One bit of advice I found somewhere when it comes to meats:
If it is a muscle the creature uses often, cook it low and slow.
If it is a muscle the creature uses rarely, you can cook it high and fast.

There are exceptions of course.

The other idea is to master the techniques rather than specific recipes.  This way you can match the techniques to what you have available, rather than having to go to the store because you are missing one ingredient.  (Similar to mixing together Mech types rather than only using certain Mechs)
