Since I now have
six eight nine TEN(!!!) interested players, I figured I should open a thread for the restart of my game.
Here's the TO&E (http://bg.battletech.com/forums/index.php?topic=9210.0).
The old game thread (http://bg.battletech.com/forums/index.php?topic=426.0), that we'll re-use as the in-character thread once we get going again.
And the thread that got this whole thing going again (http://bg.battletech.com/forums/index.php?topic=59826.0)!
Current list of those interested:
Anastrace (who started that last thread), playing Holly Jenks, one of the unit's MechWarriors
McSlayer (who responded to the above), playing John Preston, one of the unit's MechWarriors
Failure16 (who did a LOT of the writing for the last iteration here), playing Steven Mattis, the CO's driver (and voicing a number of NPCs)
Maverick (who joined just before the game died last time), playing Eric Maddox, the pilot of the Egret attached to the JumpShip carrying the unit
And two friends of mine who I'm not sure have re-registered yet, but were dedicated players the last time around. They played:
James Twilley, the unit's lead tanker (now re-registered as FireHawk)
Alexander Croft, one of the unit's MechWarriors (now re-registered as Gorechylde)
Latest additions:
Tegyrius, playing Cameron McCann, the unit's S-2
Alleycat2112, playing William "Bill" Walsh, a VTOL pilot on Astrokaszy
Snimm, playing Eric Simmons, one of the unit's MechWarriors
Sebastian Llywelen, playing Maximilian Richter, a senior Jump Trooper on Astrokaszy
-
I am re registered.
Gorechylde playing Alexander Croft
-
Outstanding! Hopefully your first ten posts won't be too painful...
-
Acolyte Epsilon Jenks reporting for duty!
-
Obviously I need to check my e-mail! And I'll edit the post above... :)
-
The S-2 shop is up. Or will be as soon as one of the techs fixes the coffeemaker.
-
They're working on it... honest! :)
-
Darn coffee maker took more work than planned... is it working now? 8)
-
Ahh. Sweet, sweet caffeine, black fuel of interstellar trade and conflict...
-
OK, I think we're getting close with Anastrace's character, and Failure16 and Tegyrius have sent me a ton of draft material to sort through. McSlayer is off the net for a couple of weeks, but I think we'll be ready to roll once they get back.
-
Oh good, the forum's back up... everyone still with us?
-
:taps microphone:
Is this thing on? ???
-
Yes,, I am totally still in for this. .... But I am still on travel until the 12th of Feb.
Mek
-
Great to hear from you! That's one... :)
-
I'm still in, just fighting the flu for the second time in 3 months. My partner works at a hospital, but thoughtfully brings the flu to me. :P I swear I have no idea how she never gets sick. Mutant probably.
-
No worries... just get better! In the mean time, I posted a prequel piece in the IC thread. Failure16 did a great job of detailing Crowell's brevet promotion not long before she relieved Croft as Duty Officer...
-
Ok, just finalized Anastrace's character (Adept I-ε Holly Jenks, one of the MechWarriors), so all we need now is McSlayer to return from their travels on Monday... O0
-
I think I just recruited another player last night, so it'll be a couple of more days until we officially get moving...
-
I'll just TAG this for now, writing isn't my suit.
TT
-
Roger, no worries.
-
I'm looking forward to this! Hopefully no one will get hit by an A4 to the knee because of that TAG :P
-
If they do, rest assured they did something very VERY wrong... ::)
-
I just sent the newest player a first draft of their character... I expect to wrap that up within the week...
-
I think the last thing to be done is get the newest player registered...
-
Twilley's back online.
I hate their verification system. I actually have problems reading the fragging thing.
Hmm, it does not accept "No, I am a meat popsicle" in the "Are you a human?" question.
--Hawk
-
Great! Only one more to go...
-
Bill Walsh VTOL pilot, just test posting.
-
Fantastic! The bad news is you have nine more posts to be free of the Captcha...
-
The next time you two are together, perhaps post a little conversation to get past the 10 post limit? :)
Also, I'm very close to the posting the first post in the re-started timeline... It won't require responses from everyone, but it won't preclude them either...
-
First new post is up! Posting isn't required, but I'll likely post again next week...
-
[drool]
Got it.
-Hawk
8 more of these ****** to go.
-
It's more than OK to just chat here to get beyond 10... any help you can give Alleycat2112 in that vein would be most appreciated...
-
A quick couple of notes:
1) I'll generally wait a week or so between my posts to give everyone a chance to respond.
2) I use the "BattleTech 2.0" skin on the forum here. This means I'm likely seeing different emoticons (smilies) than most of you are. For those who have been around a while, the set I can see is the original set here, not the one with Homer Simpson for the "drool" one (those two in particular have COMPLETELY different meanings)...
-
Completing my per flight check.
Engines = check
Combat Computer = check
Weapon System = Online
Still Human = check
-
Excellent... only 8 more posts... I've pestered the mods about as much as I can about reducing the 10 post requirement. I don't think it's within their power. I'll cheerfully respond to as many posts as necessary to get you (and everyone else newly registering) to 10.

Message sent to Terra 3051
To My Dear Ex-Wife #3 Jane,
In times of war it is my understanding alimony payment are suspending. I understand the systems have been more or less at war for 100 years, but you can hardly blame me for that.
-Bill
-
Bill,
Just send the damn check already! My lawyer tells me ComStar will garnish your wages if you keep this up!
-Jane
Terra, 17 May 3051
-
The next IC post is up... if you want to voice any NPCs (aside from a nervous Paley informing your character of the meeting), please run it by me first via PM or e-mail.
-
I was approached this week by Snimm about playing the last MechWarrior with the unit on Campoleone (Eric Simmons). We're still hammering out details, but I think we might wrap that up this weekend...
-
I've added the quirks of the various 'mechs to the first post in the TO&E thread. I drew them from the official list in the BattleMech Manual.
-
I've attached the Solaris Skunk Works (SSW) files for the units 'mechs to the first post in the TO&E. SSW doesn't have all the quirks, so those still have to be added manually to a printed sheet.
Eric Simmons is shaping up to be the unit's expert on the Beagle Active Probe (and other sensor systems), so he'll probably normally pilot the Mongoose. I tweaked that 'mech as well, primarily for desert operations by adding Double Heat Sinks (which also provides more protection to the Beagle), but turning on Fractional Accounting and shaving a handful of armor points also let me add a Recon Camera. Like the Medium Laser also in the Center Torso, it is Stabilized.
-
I want to name the Mongoose "White Knuckles."
-
I don't think any of the other MechWarriors would object to that... :)
-
OK, Eric Simmons is now confirmed! He's definitely a sensor expert, and the Mongoose is indeed the 'mech everyone wants him in.
In general, among the unit's five remaining MechWarriors, their preferences seem to be:
Sharpe: Griffin (Sniper SPA, but currently confined to quarters)
Croft: Wolverine (Jumping Jack SPA)
Jenks: Griffin (Sniper SPA)
Preston: Utility Infielder (2 Gunner; any 'mech seems to be fine with him)
Simmons: Mongoose (Eagle Eyes SPA)
Thomas (the previously senior MechWarrior) preferred the Wolverine (as a Command 'Mech, and one weighing more than 25 tons). Of course, he's dead now, so his preferences don't matter.
-
That is a really nice set of tweaks to the Mongoose, BTW.
-
Thanks! Feedback is always welcome, even when it's not that positive... ;)
Game-wise, Failure16 has a post in the works, and I'll be moving things along from there (unless, of course, there are other posts). Tegyrius has already hammered out his intel brief for Astrokaszy, which will follow my update relatively closely...
There's a gaming convention in Scranton, PA I'm trying to convince my wife to go to at the end of April. If that happens, and I can get at least a few of the players to also attend, we may game out some of the Astrokaszy action in person. We'll see how it goes...
-
Failure16's post is up! I'll give Anastrace (and everyone else) a few days to respond, then move things along...
-
Is it too late to join in on the fun?
-
Not at all, but character options are more limited at this point... What kind of character would you like to play? All the existing MechWarriors in the unit now have players, but Astrokaszy will offer other opportunities to join.
-
Ok, what are my options? I'd be interested in playing as a protomech pilot or an elemental if that's possible.
-
Well, the game is set around a ComStar garrison unit that had an "incident" during the WoB handover on the FWL periphery in 3053. A number of the infantry troopers are washouts from the Nighthawk program, and thus have basic levels of those skills. There are also logistics techs who are exoskeleton pilots. That's about as close as it gets.
The TO&E thread linked at the top of this one can give you an idea of what's in the unit at the moment. A VTOL (Ferret) pilot and another infantry squad (with Jeep) will be joining up on Astrokaszy. There's simply no room for much more. The ship is stuffed to the gills as is.
-
Sounds good. I'll read up on that thread and get back to you a little later today.
-
Great! I also have a pile of files I can e-mail you if you PM me your address.
-
Nice! I just sent you my email.
-
Files forwarded... hopefully they got through. Working on a new addition will give everyone else a few more days to respond to Failure16's post.
-
Where are we supposed to respond? This thread?
-
This thread (https://bg.battletech.com/forums/index.php?topic=426.msg1391989#new). It's linked at the top of this one, but now it has one on this page too... :)

Linky broken...

Should be fixed now... thanks TT!
-
Awesome post, Snimm! I just spent the last hour trying to get my boss's travel arrangements sorted tomorrow, or I'd post right now. I'll likely have a post in response for you tomorrow... :)
-
Thanks! Looking forward to the response!
-
Well done, Tegyrius! In case it wasn't obvious, Failure16 gets a lot of feedback via e-mail and PM, so I don't always talk his stuff up here, but I want to encourager les autres!
-
Ok, I just finalized the basic stats of another new character... Maximilian Richter is a senior Jump Trooper on Astrokaszy, played by Sebastian Llywelen. I'lll edit him into the first post shortly...
-

I am not sure I can make it to PA, by if you are going for sure let me know. Playing it out in person has it's appeal.
-
Meta Game: I am not to use to this format, so please help direct me to the correct area to post if I mess up.
What can my character is see, hearing, etc.
I am going to hunt around the forms and see if I am missing something.
I am guessing Maximilian Richter are together '?'
-
Yes, Walsh and Richter will have some kind of linkage... Mostly that will be up to the two of you. The only real limit is that both of you have managed to keep your real sympathies to yourselves, since you're both still on the regular duty roster...
-
I found the main forum.
Are we going to have an Astrokaszy forum?
I place for some action to take place while we await the Jumpship?
-
I am trying to get my 10 posts in, sorry everyone for multi posting.
Is there somewhere the Astrokaszy story up to this point is posted/outlined?
-
I've only outlined it in e-mail so far, but yes, I'll try to get one up tonight (after I have access to a full size keyboard that's not bouncing around on a train).
-
I’ll be curious to see where you take things with that part of the campaign story.
-
And before I forget to say it... no need to apologize for getting your 10 post in! Feel free to just post three more times here to get over the hump...
-
The Astrokaszy thread (https://bg.battletech.com/forums/index.php?topic=61013.0) is up!
Please run posts in that thread by me via e-mail or PM to start...

I am going to be a little slow on the acronyms sorry, who is PM? :)
-
"Private Message", sorry... you've sent me a couple already, so you I know you know how it works... :)

I'll try to finish getting my load-out squared away tonight so I can start participating in that thread as soon as possible.
-
Sounds good!
-
I emailed you a post in which I can up with a background NPC. I am hoping the format works for you. Let me know if you want me to do something differently.
-
Happy tenth post to me :)
Quick question not related to the game. Where can I find a full list of Battle Values?
-
http://www.masterunitlist.info/ (http://www.masterunitlist.info/)
Type in unit name...
TT
-
Yep, that's it... Thanks TT! :)
-
What I'm here for bro.
TT
-
Ok, I green lit AlleyCat's first post yesterday, and gave Sebastian some suggestions for his today... Hopefully we'll see one or both soon... :)
-
Thank You! Truetanker!
-
Great work AlleyCat!
-
Thank You! Truetanker!
* Ah! My eyes bleed... *
Yer welkome Alleycat!
TT
-
Sebastian: the only way to really delete posts is to modify them to be blank. In general, if you have corrections, just modify them in...
-
Gotcha. I was only asking because I was modifying my last post and hit the quote button instead. I was on my mobile so I didn't notice until I posted it.
-
No problem, it happens... :)
-
Alrighty.
-
Well, MEPACon crossed the "too hard" threshold for my wife, so we're not going... :-\
-
Brushing up on my Battletech skills. The VTOL critical hit table is sadly as I remember it. xp xp Hopefully Hawk and I will get in a VTOL vs. Tanks (sim) battle soon.
-
Yep, your best bet is to stay out of his weapons range... ;)
-
Holy smokes... I'm ever so glad I gave Hong a base -1 target for KF Navigation! Going from pirate point to pirate point is HARD! Even with her phenomenal skill and a functioning computer, it took 4.5 hours to run the calculations.
For future reference, the Inside Straight and Full House jumped out of the Campoleone system at 1347 on 06 November, 3053.
-
Tegyrius, time for that excellent intel brief...
-
By your command!
-
Excellent! Questions from the peanut gallery are encouraged! 8)
-
You sent me a lot of information when I was going to start playing, so please be forgiving if I missed anything.
Is the some basic information on Shervanis City? Background? Maps?
I am looking to see the lay out of the base, space port, etc. Not because my character is looking to leave any time soon, Blake be praised!
-
I haven't actually mapped out Shervanis City, sorry. The departures from there are mostly going to be narrative vice played out.
If you have some specific ideas, I'm more than willing to entertain them! :)
-
So what were you trying to say about my OC, AlleyCat? Haha
-
Just remember Craig is trying to extract his whole network, not just the two of you... ^-^
-
Will do.
-
I just read Cameron McCann briefing and it answered a lot of my questions. It was very well written.
I am good with taking someone else lead getting off world, I just want to play my part ;)
It has been a very long time since I did a forum based RPG. The last time I played in one was on a C 64 BBS.
-
Tegyrius did a very thorough write up that I had to make very few tweaks to... He deserves high praise all around!
If anyone else wants to propose that level of detail, I'm all ears... :)
To be clear, Astrokaszy is only the first stop on this ride... ^-^
-
I'm also interested in doing that. I still need to finish chapter 1 and all the RP posts first, however.
-
Is this where you guys will meet that Hazed Out! ex-Black Warrior?
>:D
TT
-
If the unit knows what's good for them, they wouldn't touch an "ex" Black Warrior with a 10 meter pole...
-
If the unit knows what's good for them, they wouldn't touch an "ex" Black Warrior with a 10 meter pole...
Party pooper!
8)
TT
-
It's my party, and I'll... yeah, whatever... if I want to! >:D
I KNOW you're old enough to get that joke... ;)
-
I see your a Lesley Gore fan...
And I have an ol' forty-five from when she sung that in '63!
Now you need to play some Twisted Sister to work out the kinks of work...
TT
-
I give! You're clearly older than me... >:D
-
Naw... but this is:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8N_tupPBtWQ (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8N_tupPBtWQ)
I'm the one in sunglasses... and you guys and gals are the one's sing most of the same song!
TT
-
The pace is slow, but the game is going, honest! For the main group, McCann's briefing is a good opportunity to ask questions. On Astrokaszy, I believe the ball is in Richter's court...
-
Great post Sebastian! I'm still hoping for some Q&A on Tegyrius' excellent briefing, and may have to generate some NPC chatter if I don't get any help from the peanut gallery... :)
-
Peanut gallery posting is encouraged, but please don't post what OTHER players do... in Play by Post, this is known as "god-modding", and limits other players' responses. To say it's impolite is an understatement...
-
True... figured a simple nod would end the conversation, no foul meant.
TT
-
I didn't think you did (mean a foul), just please don't do that again... :)
-
I didn't think you did (mean a foul), just please don't do that again... :)
Who me?
TT
-
Thanks for discussing the nod, I was going to ask about it.
I decided to play the whole thing as a perceived overly interested party.
Is there a good ComStar vs. WoB novel worth reading?
-
Is it day or night... I see no time angle listed.
TT
-
I'd assume early evening, after "normal" duty hours. Either player could declare otherwise if they desire, citing their (mutual) duty rotation.
-
Great post Sebastian! I'm still hoping for some Q&A on Tegyrius' excellent briefing, and may have to generate some NPC chatter if I don't get any help from the peanut gallery... :)
I think I may have killed the thread under the weight of my wall of text... :/
-
It's play by post, so no worries! If you want to post a synopsis here in the discussion thread, that might help too.
-
Come now, there is a Saharan-sized wall of text currently unfolding in the Astrokaszy sub-thread!
But, sure, I can klodge something together to generate some dialogue. Just wanted the rest of the ccrew to get a chance without having to read my drivel...
Really nice briefing, by the way. And I loved your introductory post. My apologies for not saying so sooner!
-
Indeed! And a synopsis of that wouldn't be unwelcome here either... ^-^
-
Excellent answer, Tegyrius!
-
Doin’ what I can to facilitate the eventual link-up...
-
And it's appreciated! 8)
-
Unless someone wants to do anything more before planet fall, that will be my next post in the main thread (which will stay with the main unit). I'll give it a week or so.
I have to admit, the HBS game is distracting me more than I thought it would... ::)
-
It's been a bit longer than I intended, but I'll try to get a post up this week.
-
I've been moving houses and travelling the last two weeks, but will try to get the ship on the ground this coming weekend. I'm also still hoping to hear from Jenks' player...
-
Today was consumed with moving furniture, and I'm still confined to the tiny keyboard on my netbook at the new house. I'll try to get a post up later this week when I can at least type on a full size one.
-
Good news/bad news... Moving houses has continued to consume the majority of my time, so I haven't posted yet. The good news is Failure16 gave me a long post that I'll edit this weekend and give back to him to post, so there will be something!
-
Getting my main computer back on the internet is proving more challenging than expected. I hate editing on the tiny keyboard of my netbook, or I'd have something up by now. If Amazon isn't lying, I should be up by Tuesday...
-
Finally got my main computer back on the internet, but it's WAY too late to do any editing or posting. We'll see if I get home early enough tomorrow...
-
Yeah....
* waits patiently for new stuff to happen *
TT :)
-
OK, edits are finally back to Failure16... I'll give him a few days to digest and post them, then get the ship on the ground on Astrokaszy...
-
Failure16 gave me ANOTHER post while hammering out the first, but I think both should be smooth today. I'll post shortly after he posts the second one...
-
Hey, who loves ya?
Both posts are up; one is a bit late from a chronological perspective, and is annotated accordingly. The other puts us right where we need to be. Time to get those lift fans spinning and those leg actuators flexing!
-
I should have a post up within the hour...
-
And it's up! I tried to leave things as open as possible for people to jump in where they'd like. The original plan was for Croft and Jenks to pilot the 'mechs, but I haven't heard from either player lately, so a last minute substitution wouldn't be out of place.
-
I just sent Failure16 edits on a garrison post from slightly before the unit lands... Hopefully it'll be up soon!
-
Okay, it's up. My sincerest apologies: it appears when I tried posting it late last week it simply never went through and I, of course, didn't check.
I'd like to get an NPC vignette for those at the ship, but who knows.
-
No worries... I'm only shooting for updates about once per week, and I think we're on track there...
-
Failure16's next post is back in his hands for posting... shouldn't be too long...
-
On the waaay!
-
Sorry for the delay there... I got distracted by a certain new computer game (Pathfinder: Kingmaker) and I broke a toe doing yardwork. I'm going to try to get back to a roughly weekly schedule, but every two weeks is probably more realistic.
-
A quick reminder regarding our Mechwarriors:
Croft: 2/3 Gunner/Pilot, with the Jumping Jack SPA, technically the most junior of the four, usually pilots the Wolverine
Jenks: 3/3, with the Sniper SPA, usually pilots the Griffin (when Sharpe isn't)
Simmons: 3/3, with the Eagle Eyes SPA (which adds 30 meters of range to the Beagle Probe and Recon Camera), usually pilots the Mongoose
Preston: 2/3, usually pilots the Phoenix Hawk (when Jenks isn't)
-
I've laid out six maps for the battle, and they'll be flattening out under various heavy things for the next day or two. I also dug up sufficient miniatures for both sides. We'll see how this goes...
-
I finished playing out the battle today, so it's just a matter of posting the making of arrangements (probably tomorrow), and then writing up the results over the next week (around getting the gold recovery mission done). It went rather differently than I expected (aside from my dice being extremely fickle). At this point, I'll say everyone lived, but no more... ^-^
OK, I'll say a little more... 8)
I played Croft as aggressively as I've known his player to play (which is to say "very"). He cooked himself pretty well, but did a LOT of damage, and made all his shutdown rolls. You're supposed to let a Marik Wolverine cool down every other turn... ::)
I used Jenks' Sniper SPA to maximum effect, though my dice rarely cooperated (sixes were my bane).
I pushed Preston only slightly less than Croft, but had the same problem as Jenks (fives were his bane). The Phoenix Hawk's double heat sinks meant no shut down rolls for him.
Simmons spent most of the battle doing what 8/12 'mechs do best, moving for +4. I also used his SPA (Eagle's Eyes) to good effect. It boosted the range of his Beagle, so he was able to deny bonuses to some of the 'mechs he was hunting. Too bad my dice weren't as cooperative as they could have been...
-
The map set up I used was:
Desert Mountains #1, oriented north, Classic "Corner" Map oriented south, Desert Mountains #2 oriented north
Desert Sinkhole #1orient south, Desert Hills oriented north, Desert Sinkhole #2 oriented north
By "oriented", I mean which direction the map was laying so the small text with its name and copyright are right side up. I also placed four level 1 hills to break up the edge runs where the maps came together (basically extending existing hills by one hex).
The enemy started on the "corner" map (representing the oasis), while the Emir's forces came in on the southeast corner of Desert Sinkhole #2 with the Double Deuce lance on the southwest corner of Desert Sinkhole #1 after all the Emir's forces entered.
-
I'll post the first post of the battle tomorrow, and draw them out about one a day or so. I'll try to interweave the gold retrieval mission between those posts as they'll be going on about the same time. There may be additional Astrokaszy posts as well, since that team is now in the know about their escape route from the WoB being on planet.
-
Sorry for the delay there... I'm finally getting the battle posted now.
I have to say: I literally rolled two 2s (Double Deuce FTW!) for location when the Rabigh Emir shot the Victor. Out of four critical chances (since both shots ALSO went internal), he got five: 2 engine, 2 gyro, and a jump jet. It almost made up for constantly missing with 5s and 6s for the Griffin and Phoenix Hawk throughout the battle. 8)
-
Apologies once again for the long delay in updates. I had a family emergency, and it took a while to resolve.
-
I'm going to be out of the country for a week or so starting tomorrow... I should have access, but we'll see...
-
It took a little over a day, but I managed to get connected at my first stop... at least I know it works at the second one...
-
Finally done with travelling for a bit... anyone else back?
-
I've heard from Tegyrius via PM... anyone else?
-
Bueller?
Buuueller?
-
I got a tentative e-mail from Failure16... waiting for a response to my answer...
-
Okay, standing by. If he's gonna re-engage, I won't narrate any actions for Mattis or Parker.
-
Excellent plan... in the mean time, feel free to grab a respirator and take a squad into the building... Mattis and Parker can be assumed to be covering the outside with the rest of the platoon.
-
I've updated the TO&E to reflect the expended repair parts. Things will progress in a bit more of a story mode for a bit.
-
I think that's about it for today... more tomorrow!
