The Urbie has been around since the original TRO 3025 back in 1986.

Ok, didn't realize that

Novel and Sourcebook Reviews / Re: Gray Death Rising

It's a custom restoration job from Odessa that seems to have the same main guns as the 11D, but we don't get a full nuts and bolts breakdown of it.

The text does explicitly say it is Gray's MAD but upgraded. I'm not sure exactly how much they could upgrade to 11D specs without getting into a "Ship of Thesus" situation -- whether it is functionally a 11D now or if some things like armor or actuators or skeleton had to be kept so that it is still substantially Grayson Carlyle's 'mech.

Aerospace / Re: Design Challenge: 'Combat' JumpShip
« Last post by Lagrange on Today at 12:36:21 »
Yes, we all know that. Despite this, there a couple of 'armed' jumpships, that are meant to operate in a theater with higher than usual threatlevels or even subsititute 'proper' navy ships. Is a Scout with an atteched Leopard CV more efficient than a Quetzalcoatl? Absolutely. Yet, both exist in canon.
A Quetzalcoatl is actually 100M cheaper than Scout and carries twice the ASF of a Leopard CV (which itself costs ~168M), so the Q is almost half price and double effectiveness in an ideal setting.  The place where a dropship carrier becomes important is when you need to overtake another ship.

My impression though is that jumpships going into combat zones favors few-drop collars though. You get huge utility from 1 drop collar, and modestly more from 2 due to the startup cost of a jumpship.  Beyond that the 'all eggs in one basket' effect becomes rather worrisome.

There are three or four of us that bring Total Warfare and Tac Ops every week. And, all of us have PDF copies of the rules. We started posting up rules for people to look at so that they'd be prepared when they came to play.  For example, I posted up the rules for TAG and SG IDF (including the BV calculations) the week before I first played it, in an effort to head off any argument about it. TAG and SG IDF is actually what got our PITA player booted: he lost his mind when he got thrashed with SG ammo . We pointed out the rules to him repeatedly but he was a lost cause.

I would say that the commando is probably more iconic then the Urbanmech. The Urbanmech been around for what, like 5yrs

Not even close.

The Urb has been in MWO since 2015 and tabletop a looong time before that.

The Inner Sphere / Re: What tech actually becomes obselete

I think it is also influenced by where you are.
A planet close to Terra or one of the capital worlds (e.g. New Avalon etc) or the main mech production center (Hesperus) will switch to Clan-tech equipment as fast as possible.
But a not so well planet with only one or two lines may not switch.

And it will also be a question of money.
Do you take a Clan tech mech when for the same amount of money you can by two or three mechs that come close in capabilities?
Because one Clan mech can only be in one place at a time, while three IS mechs can be at three different locations.

So my take is that Elite units will be Clan tech while other units (in decreasing number of importance) have maybe a command company with Clan tech, a Clan-tech Command lance or only the Commander has a Clan-tech mech.

The Atlas needs more iconic pilots. There was Frederick Steiner, back when he called himself that, but we didn't see much of Focht in the cockpit.

According to Legends, IIRC, by the time he became Focht, his active combat days were behind him and he only piloted his Atlas to keep his qualification current. He wanted to serve frontline, but IIRC ComStar felt he was worth more back safe than in harm's way.

I like the idea of Battletech military fission reactors being just really powerful RTGs.

Electric power plants in general are pretty neat.  Combined cycle plants are a little over 70% efficient thanks to exhaust heat recovery powering a steam turbine :)  I've been to a plant that used a Cat Solar turbine powered with natural gas to generate 40 MW.  It produced enough waste heat to provide steam for a 10 or 15 MW turbine.  The heat recovery stack was a giant box probably about 1200 sqft in footprint and about 5 stories tall
