WOLF HAWK TOTEM MECH



Overview

The Wolf Hawk combines extreme tactical mobility with lethal melee capabilities on a well-armed and -armored Clan totem mech.  Able to crush the cockpit of nearly any enemy mechwarrior within a half-kilometer circle, the Wolf Hawk is one of the most feared mechs on the modern battlefield.

Capabilities

Essentially a lighter and farther jumping Jade Hawk, the Wolf Hawk is built around a 55-ton variant of the Jade Hawk’s Endo-Steel chassis and incorporates smaller versions of the Jade Hawk’s Partial Wing technology and Triple-Strength Myomer musculature.  Occupying a sweet spot in the design space, the Wolf Hawk is just heavy enough to deliver a decapitating attack from either or both of its TSM-enhanced battlefists but light enough to employ eight Improved Jump Jets in combination with its Partial Wing, granting the Wolf Hawk a jump distance of 300 meters.

An ER PPC and a trio of Pulse Medium Lasers provide the Wolf Hawk’s core firepower.  At around 600 meters, the Wolf Hawk opens up with its ER PPC, then flanks or jumps to approximately 300 meters and brings its pulse laser array into play.  This, in combination with another bolt from the ER PPC and thermal management from an ER Small Laser and/or a Pulse Micro Laser, activates the Wolf Hawk’s TSM.  The Wolf Hawk then executes its coup de grace, jumping to point-blank range from, and often directly behind, its target, where the Wolf Hawk can decapitate most enemy mechs with either of its TSM-enhanced battlefists.

Defensively, the Wolf Hawk relies on its high jump agility to avoid return fire and is very difficult for most targeting systems to track in the air.  When the rare enemy shot does connect, the Wolf Hawk mounts over 11 tons of standard armor, the maximum for its chassis, and can typically survive several melee encounters before retiring from the field, often moving laterally along an enemy line from opponent to opponent.  Although most of the Wolf Hawk’s battery of energy weapons is concentrated in its torso to keep its battlefists free for melee, an Improved Heavy Small Laser is located in each arm to defend against the rare unit that is able to outflank the Wolf Hawk.

History

Having suffered for decades from the high jump mobility of Jade Falcon totem mechs equipped with partial wings, Wolf planners recognized that an answer was needed in the run up to the Battle for Terra.  They decided to fight fire with fire, setting requirements for a partial wing design of their own that could literally head hunt these Falcon totem mechs.  So even while the Wolf Empire moved against the Galatean League, the ilClan used Sea Fox merchant intermediaries to work with Dynamic Ordnance and Ammunition Corporation of Galatea to bring the Wolf Hawk into production.  Using Jade Hawk manufacturing lines, the Wolves effectively turned an escaped Jade Falcon design against the Falcons, and named it after a native Terran raptor in a final insult to the Wolves’ long-held enemies.  With only certain lighter Hierofalcon and Ion Sparrow configurations capable of matching the Wolf Hawk’s jump range, the Wolf Hawk became a deadly hunter of these and similar designs like the Gyrfalcon and Shrike during the Battle for Terra, often eliminating even the vaunted Jade Phoenix assault omnimech from the field.

WOLF HAWK 2 & HEADHUNTER VARIANTS

Variants

A low priority, the Wolves failed to capture Galatea for some years after occupying Terra.  When Galatea started to fall within the Isle of Skye’s orbit, the Sea Foxes removed all Clan weapons technology, manufacturing equipment, and blueprints from Dynamic Corporation, sending production of the original Wolf Hawk into hiatus.  Dynamic, however, was able to resurrect the design using an entirely Spheroid technology base.  Although the firepower and accuracy of the resulting Headhunter is inferior to that if the Wolf Hawk, the Headhunter retained the Wolf Hawk’s extreme jump mobility and decapitating melee strikes while adding Impact-Resistant Armor from the Solaris VII arenas to extend the Headhunter’s longevity in melee combat.  The Headhunter became a welcome addition to the Isle of Skye’s arsenal, and after Defiance Industries licensed the design, Skye added a second production center for the Headhunter on Hesperus II.

But as the ilClan moved out from Terra, Skye eventually lost Galatea to the Wolves.  In that time, the Wolf Hawk had become the ilClan’s unofficial totem mech alongside the official Orion IIIC.  In high demand among aggressive Wolf and even surviving Falcon mechwarriors, the Wolf Hawk was returned to production on Galatea and another variant developed with an Interface Cockpit and Targeting Computer for use by mechwarriors opting for increasingly safe Enhanced Imaging Implants.  With incredibly accurate and dangerous firepower, the Wolf Hawk 2 is a potentially deadly opponent even before its extreme jump and melee capabilities are brought to bear.

Rumors of the development of a Wolf Hawk omnimech to replace the ilClan’s Blitzking omnimech have emerged in recent years.  Given the large volume of internal space required by the Wolf Hawk’s eight Improved Jump Jets and Partial Wing, such a development seems unlikely unless certain configurations employ standard or no jump jets.

Deployment

Like other Clans, the ilClan has organized its modern, melee-equipped totem mechs into shock stars, binaries, and trinaries, usually attaching one such unit to each galaxy, assault cluster, or strike cluster.  With the widespread adoption and concentration of Interface Cockpits and Enhanced Imaging Implants in frontline units, the Wolf Hawk is found among ilClan secondline galaxies and clusters while the Wolf Hawk 2 is limited to ilClan frontline galaxies and clusters.  The resources of Terra have made the ilClan rich in military equipment, and some commanders and officers also have access to a Wolf Hawk as their backup battlemech when their principle omnimech is sidelined.

Unlike the Orion IIIC, the Wolf Hawk is not restricted to the Wolf touman and Jade Falcon and Smoke Jaguar shock units and officers also make use of the Wolf Hawk.  Although they prefer the talons on their War Eagle and Blood Eagle totem mechs, the Falcons cannot deny the effectiveness of the Wolf Hawk’s battlefists after losing so many former comrades to the design.

The Skye Rangers and allied units and mercenaries make similar use of their Headhunters in a shock role as they try to hold back the ilKhan’s hereditary claims to former Steiner and Davion worlds, although it appears to be only a matter of time until Skye loses Defiance Industries and the Headhunter production lines on Hesperus II to the ilClan’s tide.

With capabilities that can dominate most arenas except for Ishiyama, Wolf Hawks and Headhunters are highly sought by the Solaris VII stables and by gladiators on other worlds.  Buy they remain rare in those venues as Skye hordes production for itself and most Clanners look down on gladiators who fight for money.

Something like the Wolf Hawk that can jump 10 hexes into an opponent’s rear while inflicting a +5 TM and then follow that up with two, 1-in-6 chances for a decapitating head punch is about as close as I can get to an “instant win” button in this game.  I have not tested it, but I’d like to think the Wolf Hawk could beat the vaunted Jade Phoenix A more often than not.

I just posted the Wolf Hawk 2.  It maximizes the munchkinism with an Interface Cockpit and a Targeting Computer.  Those turn the ER PPC into a “pulse peeper” with a -2 TM and grant the four pulse mediums a -4 TM.  Combined with the 10MP jumps, it’s gonna carve up lots of opponents even without activating the TSM and engaging in melee.  Dunno what the BV2 is, but hopefully it accurately reflects how downright dangerous that design is.

Experienced/smart players will conserve the Wolf Hawk’s 10MP jumps for getaway jumps after melee, and try to get their weapons and TSM punches positioned just with walking/running for better to-hit numbers.  But a newbie could just spend a game jumping 10MP every turn and probably do just fine, especially with the Wolf Hawk 2.

I actually started with the Wolf Hawk 2, then worked backwards to the Wolf Hawk and Headhunter downgrades.  I’ll try to get the Spheroidtech Headhunter poster later tonight or tomorrow.

Finding art was a challenge.  That picture is someone’s homegrown Vengeance Hawk solahma design from Reddit.  It looks like a smaller Jade Hawk that can still punch and jump with a partial wing, which is what I was going for and fluffed the Wolf Hawk as.  But it’s not exactly WYSIWYG (couple extra beam weapons and an SRM-4 or two), and it’s more insectoid in appearance than lupine or avian.

The Wolf Hawk has a 15-ton advantage over the Kontio and bigger, longer-ranged weapons, so it should win more often than not just by sheer weight of armor and ranged firepower.  Their TSM punches do the same damage, but the Wolf Hawk’s punches are more accurate without the +1 from the Kontio’s Claws.  And as long as the Wolf Hawk is careful when it loses initiative, I also think a 10MP jump is more tactically valuable and inflicts TMs more reliably than the Kontio’s 11- to 16-hex runs.

The Wolf Hawk 2 fights unfairly with an Interface Cockpit and Targeting Computer that allow it to essentially ignore the Kontio’s Stealth Armor.

The Wolf Hawk and Wolf Hawk 2 are Clan mechs, so they have no alphanumeric.  The Headhunter is Spheroid, so it will have one when I get around to posting it.

No, I have neither the time nor inclination/talent for layout, website, and such.  I get the most satisfaction from just getting a design right, followed by the writing.  “Publishing”, even here, is somewhat secondary.  If I can just get the designs that I have off my spreadsheets, posted here, and maybe linked together, I’ll consider that a major victory.

How do you manage heat with the weapons layout to get to the +9 threshhold?

Also, with no pulse weaponry or the TC and/ or interface cockpit you get abysmal to-hit capability when jumping and firing.

You’re right on the Headhunter.  It’s a suckier Spheroidtech downgrade, and I had to stick with lighter ER Medium Lasers and no TC to afford the mass of everything else.

But the Wolf Hawk and Wolf Hawk 2 are Clantech.  Both have 3-4 Pulse Medium Lasers, and the Wolf Hawk 2 has a TC and an Interface Cockpit to boot.

Another solid design here. 

I'm usually wary of TSM designs because the heat is not fully in your control.  However, most heat-causing weapons don't have good targeting.  The only exception I can think of is Inferno-IV rounds in an Arrow IV engaged in direct fire targeting.
