A Boondoggle Monsoon
« on: 08 November 2024, 17:18:19 »
Okay been bored and playing around with meklab and thought I'd see what I could do if I was one of those nostalgic Admirals upgrading an anicent hull.

I rationalised the NAC's to just NAC/20 and added a few more to allow bracketing where able. Added AMS and NL45 in 5 bay lots to all locations as a keep away I can still hurt you guesture. My normal max armour and a comm scanner, I left the N-PPC bays and missle launcher alone

Oh and I gave it a speed boost to keep up with the young whipper snappers :)

Wait am I missing where this becomes a Boondoggle??

It's essentially ripping everything out of a Monsoon, then replacing it with all new stuff. From the weapons, propulsion, power, probably every associated subsystem, and possibly large sections of the hull that you had to cut through to get at those other things.

Between everything you had to rip out and everything you had to put back in, the amount of effort and labor cost could very well be equivalent to building an all new battleship instead. Hence, boondoggle.

(Now if it was something being put together by a state that didn't have the Star League's resources, maybe not. Depends on how valuable the jump core is relative to everything else).
Good news is the lab boys say the symptoms of asbestos poisoning show an immediate latency of 44.6 years. So if you're thirty or over you're laughing. Worst case scenario you miss out on a few rounds of canasta, plus you've forwarded the cause of science by three centuries. I punch those numbers into my calculator, it makes a happy face.

Jump cores are always the most expensive bit.

Not necessarily the most labor intensive part, though. And, well, actual cost is relative, especially when you're the Terran Hegemony, you already own the core forges, shipyards, and germanium reserves, and you know what all the numbers look like. Heck, even if we assume the Hegemony doesn't have a vast stockpile of germanium and titanium stored up for shipbuilding, they do have a vast fleet of mothballed ships they could grind up for those resources, so material costs are basically zero.

(heck, the fact that they had a vast fleet of warships to both mothball and sell off to other states means there was absolutely no shortage of raw materials to build more ships)

Putting that much work into rebuilding an old hull is for poor people, or those rare times when the Hegemony is in a hurry.

As Liam's Ghost said it's basically strip back to jump core and the structral frames and rebuild outwards, new weapons, engines armour, senors, power and computer systems, it's not even cut holes to access sytems as the armour scheme changes completely.

Given that it was a the plan of some Admiral who I'm guessing had the juice and want this as his command ship..  I'm not sure it a Boondoggie but more of 1 of Updated Command Ship.

Okay if it’s an off command ship what would you pair it with as it division mate?

Bonus point if it’s an older vessel that’s been repurposed?
