The danger with this kind of thing is that doing it right might result in something long time fans are disappointed with because the expectations are intertwined with an unachievable recapturing of a decades-old emotional state (or rather, worse, the rose-colored memory of said state). It may be quite impossible for many people to be satisfied
Also I’m weary of fan influence having too much sway over the creative process. Most of us aren’t game designers for a reason
To be clear, I'm similarly wary of that sort of thing, and I'm not one of those people who confuses nostalgia for actual everlasting quality.
And yes, fan influence is generally a bad thing, because most fans are, frankly, stupid people (not that that's unique to fans, it's just that most people are quite stupid -- as George Carlin famously observed, look at how stupid the average person is, and then realize that half of 'em are stupider than that).
