Title: NorCal Area: Anyone still Kicking?
Post by: MarauderD on 21 April 2021, 10:22:01
Since Endgame closed in Oakland, I haven't seen any postings for get togethers in the Bay Area.  I'm up in Sonoma County in Santa Rosa.  Now that we're able to get vaccinated (sooner or later!) is there still a community getting together and playing a game now and then?

Cheers,

Mad

We have been trying to form a group on Facebook, but it started right as COVID did so very slow progress there. I’ve heard there was a group at Black Diamond Games in Concord doing a campaign on the weekend. But no idea what happened there with COVID.

Well, as a luddite I refuse to join social media.  If a game comes up this summer let me know if I can crash it, got about 40 freshly painted minis in this last year, be a shame not to get to use them!

Cheers,

Mad

I haven’t seen or heard of any other members of the FB group on the forums other than me, so I’ll try and be a go between and keep you both in the loop.

I know Black Diamond Games is in the process of reopening and the more established BT group might be starting back up. If you call I’m sure they’d give you some info.

The ‘second’ group I am involved in started right as COVID hit so we haven’t actually done anything.

Bay Area Battletech Brethren. I know the state is aiming for opening up sooner rather than later so we should get something going soon (tm)

Oh nice.

I “started” with the TT side of things with my buy in to the KS, which ended up being COVID time. So I haven’t taken them out aside from a few times I made my brother play against me.

I'm primarily a collector, but have done little 2 on 2 games when Endgame was still around.

So Covid restrictions have been lifted or lessened atleast throughout California. Anyone interested in getting a game in? I posted on the Facebook group as well, but I know some of you said you don’t do the Book.

Probably at Games of Antioch, the new Games of Martinez or Black Diamond Games. I can call to set it up.

I'd be interested but I'd need plenty of warning because I'm up in the North Bay and I have 3 kids to plan around.  Shoot me a PM if things get planned!

Cheers,

Mad.

Is there a current place where people meet up and play?
I currently have a bunch of painted minis but very little exp with actual gameplay
Im not on social media but i would love to try and get into a game or two.

I'm not on social media either, and although there is a small group of bay area BattleTech people, I don't think there are any meetups planned.  If there are, I definitely want to hear about it!

I have been keeping my ear to the ground on Facebook. We have a group there but nothing ever really happened with it. I have tried to pump some life into it from time to time, but nothing.

I heard a group was playing at Black Diamond Games on Sundays pre-lockdown. But I have never seen anything about it.

I’d be interested in getting a game going either there, or Games of Martinez. Games of Antioch would be ideal if anyone is closer to that than the others for a pick up or something to that effect.

Ok, my KS wave 2 came today. I now have two regiments of mechs in “various” stages of painting. It’s time I actually used them.

If I post up some dates would anyone be interested in concord or Martinez?

Martinez is a tad closer to the North Bay.  Gimme plenty of warning (like at least 14 days for the wife and 3 kids) and I'd love to meet up and play.  I haven't learned Alpha strike but would love to try it.

I’ve only played a few games of classic with my brother and once tried to teach my two buddies. We could try alpha strike. Once you get your wave 2 we can try alpha strike. I won’t know enough to get too confused I think.  ;D

Well shoot for the end of the month rn and play it by ear?

I am based in Brentwood. We have iirc one up in the north bay Sonoma county area, one  on the other side of the tunnel and some in other areas I don’t know 100%. Concord or Martinez seem to be the most central locations (plus they already have stores with gaming space).

I just came here today to say I stopped by Black Diamond Games (in concord) today as I was near by anyhow. They had two heavy striker stars from their ding and dent stuff on sale. Picked up both of them. I was talking to the owner/manager (idk which) and he was saying a fair number of people have been picking up the BTech stuff. One of the workers also mentioned how he’d seen more sales of it as well.

I mentioned looking to form a group and they both said there was no active BT group there, but wouldn’t be opposed to us starting one (idk why they ever would be but I digress). He said they have open gaming a few days durring the week, but with disparate locations for all of us that seems much harder to do. The weekends they said are usually also open but more in the evening, as they have lots of magic/Pokémon card game stuff going on in the day. I’ll know games of Martinez was moving locations to offer more gaming tables as well. So I’ll try to check them out soon. I am hoping to make an honest attempt at one or the other around the end of the month.

Just FYI, I'll be out of state on vacation from September 14-22nd but would be down to get together sometime on the first couple weekends of October.

In the next week or so I’ll start calling around to reserve us some table time at BDG or Games of Martinez for the second or third of October.

So in an effort to keep us at the top of the page, and to provide a small update, I went to games of Martinez the other day. (My parents actually found this place, it’s near an Italian place they like). It’s too small to host table top games, they have a small room converted to hold a couple tables. It would be very cramped for a 3v3 MTG game let alone us being able to maneuver mechs around. So it looks like they are out until they find a new larger location. I am going to check a brand new store, Games of Brentwood, here soon. They opened today, so hopefully I can find something there.
Title: Re: NorCal Area: Anyone still Kicking?
Post by: Kerfuffin(925) on 10 September 2021, 19:22:05
So Games of Brentwood looks awesome. I talked to the manager and they seemed happy to have us out there. They have plenty of magic sized tables, that could easily work with the map sheets or new neoprene mats. They also said they’ll be adding a few 40k style tables, which would work very well for alpha strike games. It turns out today was their soft open, the actual opening is next Friday.

They don’t have any events/days hard planned for the weekends so I think it would work out perfectly. That it is only a few miles from my house is just an added bonus. It also has some good, easy food right near by.

If anyone is violently opposed to Brentwood or Alpha Strike (for this first test run) let me know and I’ll work harder to figure out concord but as of now we will try out Alpha Strike (300PV) in Brentwood in the beginning of October.

Ok, so I've only ever played Classic and I'm trying to get ready for alpha strike. I've printed my cards, and I've got the standard mini games equipment (dice, counters, measuring tools, dry erase markers). Is there anything else I should grab before we get started?
Title: Re: NorCal Area: Anyone still Kicking?

I haven’t seen the size of the tables they’ll be getting at GoB. I stopped in the store today and they weren’t there. Hopefully they’ll have the 40k tables set up by then and we can run on those. If not we’ll probably use hex mats.

I’ll be printing a few of the DFA Wargaming reference sheet. It should cover just about everything. They have some good learn to play alpha strike videos. I’ll bring my iPad too, I have pdf copies.

I checked out a couple of their videos, which helped me navigate the alpha strike card customization. I'll need pointers on things like what sprinting is and how I can unload battle armor.

I'm looking forward to it. Just gotta find the time in my schedule.

Also, finished the last model I need to be fully painted at 300pts.

Yeah let’s shoot for 11. 300 PV.

If anyone has a mat that would be ideal. It doesn’t look like they have brought in the gaming tables yet. I can bring my paper maps if we need. Or scrounge up some stuff to have 3d terrain.
Title: Re: NorCal Area: Anyone still Kicking?

I have 1 BattleMat:  Alpine/Grasslands C.  If anyone has another I think two BattleMats would do it.  One might be a little tight but since we're all learning Alpha Strike I'm sure it will work.

I have the tukkayid maps and the two KS wave 2.5 map sets (alien worlds and desert). I can bring those and we should be good. if you bring the terrain, we could just push two tables together to get the space we need.

So just confirming.
Tomorrow at 11am (roughly 12 hours from this post) at games of Brentwood.

2430 Sand Creek Rd Suite D-3

It’s in the raleys shopping center

300Pts alpha strike. (I’ll bring a 600 pt list as well, so we can do a 2v1 so one of us isn’t sitting off to the side).

I will be bringing my tablet with the alpha strike rule book along with some cheat sheets.

I went yolo with my super fast models, tried to swarm with my battle armor, and lost everything pretty quick. Doesn't help when you have a very small force and your assault mech misses every shot.
Title: Re: NorCal Area: Anyone still Kicking?
Post by: Kerfuffin(925) on 02 October 2021, 20:00:54
Yes a little too aggressive with the Hellion, and then I was able to concentrate fire a little better. I was able to roll about 50/50 on the critical turns, while the Goliath Scorpions couldn’t hit after the first couple turns.

I ended up loosing 4 mechs tho, so it was closer than it looked.

The one turn of shooting at long and the rest of the game at medium let my  weaker long range damage mechs compete with the much better pound for pound clan mechs.

Title: Re: NorCal Area: Anyone still Kicking?

It's a little better for me to go to Antioch than concord but not much. Concord breaks the 1 hour mental barrier that makes me balk.

Title: Re: NorCal Area: Anyone still Kicking?
Post by: Vedgy on 03 October 2021, 08:41:25
So I've been thinking more about the way the full movement, full range version of the game played out. I think I agree with the DFA guys on reducing speeds and cutting range bands down to 3"/12"/21".

Playing on anything less than a 6' board means that a 24" medium range is where most of the fights are going to happen. The premium in points values paid on mechs with long range weapons is wasted. The 39pt Awesome 8Q can be dumped for the 40pt BLR-1G every time. Awesome is going to be doing equal or less damage (BLR gets OH as an option) and has less hit points.

If we limit the size of the boards to 4-5 feet, like yesterday's tables, we should still be able to knock out half-speed games without spending all day. The 12" medium range means that brawlers can still be relevant without becoming the only kind of model that matters. I also think it's a little ridiculous for a Hellion to cover the entire 5' board in 2 turns. Dasher will be even worse.

I'm probably a little sore from Executioner failing so hard, but it does make me kind of want to do variable damage rolls, too. The entire game swining on a ouple rolls from one model really feels bad.

Anyways, I did have fun, and look forward to being able to do it again.
Title: Re: NorCal Area: Anyone still Kicking?
Post by: MarauderD on 03 October 2021, 09:38:07
I can totally understand that.  Especially since you fielded one clan star.  With the first game we had two lances each, and our heavies could only move four inches at a time—it seemed like it took 45 minutes for that first game to really get to the action.

We should have measured the playing table:  maybe you all did during the second game after I left.  It seemed fairly large for the 2:1 DFA Wargaming conversion for movement.  We can start taking notes on table sizes and figure out which scale feels best to us.

IIRC, it seemed like the first game spent forever at long range, and we only got to a 12” medium range in the last two playing turns.

Sounds like your game may have been decided too fast?
Title: Re: NorCal Area: Anyone still Kicking?
Post by: Kerfuffin(925) on 03 October 2021, 11:48:44
Yes I was thinking about Half versus RAW last night too. I think the two tables was too big, but the single table was going to be too small. Maybe I was wrong, especially with half movement.

Yeah we were able to get and stay in medium range by turn 2 for some mechs, and the rest of the game was at medium after.

I think there will be an adjustment period while we get used to it. I think the DFA guys use a 4x4 play area. That combined with their objective play forces moving in.
Title: Re: NorCal Area: Anyone still Kicking?
Post by: Luciora on 03 October 2021, 11:59:28
How aggressive were you guys playing too?  That can determine how long a game will take too.
Title: Re: NorCal Area: Anyone still Kicking?
Post by: MarauderD on 03 October 2021, 12:05:40
I’d say very aggressive on the first game.  Only 1/4 of our forces did any maneuvering, and they were the lights and mediums.

It'd be cool to see pics if someone takes them...

Just a couple quick pics of the first match, which featured two Lances of Kerfuffin's Lyran Royal Guards vs. my two Lances of the 5th Sword of Light.

Vedgy brought some 2d terrain which we plopped down as hills, lakes and rough ground.  We also decided that since it was our first game, we'd do a 2:1 inch conversion on speeds and weapon ranges:  so Short was 3", Medium 12" and Long 21".

Round 2 we have entered the map and battle lines are forming.  His main line is on his far right, his center is his Awesome and Archer which are about to take cover and fire from the water for a few rounds:
and also the two mechs on Kerfuffin's left flank, a Thud- 5SE and a Commando:

By Round 8, my mediums have flipped to be on his left, and one of his Commandos and his valiant Thud have finally fallen.  Other Mechs are starting to fall, including my Wolverine, Wasp, and his Marauder:

At I guess round 11 perhaps, we call the game.  We just count up armor and structure left, and estimate that the Sword of Light would eek out a pyrrhic victory if we continued:

At game end my Archer and Thud were both down to internals, my Awesome was down to half his armor, and my Warhammer and Shad were fresh.  I can't speak for Kerfuffin, but I had a blast with our first Alpha Strike game and look forward to the next.  I'm hoping we can find a game store with 3d terrain (or we should get some more 2d terrain!) and we'll continue to fiddle with playing 2-1 or 1-1 ranges when the table size dictates.

Yeah I had a great time both games. Hopefully I’ll figure out my new work schedule here soon and we can have another go at it. Maybe move to Antioch or concord and use their 40K boards, until the Brentwood Location is able to finish their boards.

I should have paid a bit more attention to pictures but I have two from my game with Vedgy. I’ll see if I can’t find a way to link them in here. I’ve decided I’m going to cheat and just post discord links...

The first picture should be from turn two, Vedgys hellion and accompanying battle armor pushed up quick. It melted my Commando (no head) before falling to the rest of the short company. A few more turns at mid range saw a lot of overheating from the Scorpions, and a few more lost mechs on my side. The executioner whiffed his attack earlier forcing him to retreat into the forest to cool off. That would have been a big game changer, as my MAD would have been forced to check for a crit. I spread some damage around, that combined with the heat lead to a few scorpion mechs hiding in the trees. This let me take out the cauldron born with what was probably 4/5 mechs, along side the BA left to cause a distraction. Clan honor wouldn’t allow the Scorpions to back down, so they continued the fight. I was able to take out two of the three remaining mechs and possibly put a little damage on the Exe (I can’t remember). We called it there as I had half my force remaining in relatively good health, versus the lone Executioner. The second picture shows the aftermath.

2 feet for medium range (RAW/24”) really helped out a lot for my relatively long range poor forces. I also learned from my mistake from the first game, I didn’t split up nearly as much, allowing myself to mitigate some average rolls through weight of fire.

So in other news. I had my first day of work today, I work Saturday night-Thursday morning. It will be very difficult for me to get out the next couple weeks anyway. I will talk to my boss about moving it around once I have some more time in. Maybe it’ll give me the desire to paint, who knows.

Congrats indeed!  I'm probably looking at a full schedule until sometime in November anyway, so we've got plenty of time to try to put something together.

The majority of us seem to be located a bit further north.

I’m at the tail end of what is widely acceptable as being called the east bay.

If you can make the trip up we have had one gathering in Brentwood, and it was successful, if small, by everyone’s reckoning. We will probably go again sometime next month. We might try to switch up locations due to all of us being spread out.

That being said I saw on Facebook GameKastle Santa Clara had a painting contest, and someone submitted a Battlemaster mech as their entry.

So for those of you who have been held in suspense about my work schedule I am now on days Monday-Friday for about a month. So if we wanted to do something early November I should be free for that as well.

So games of Brentwood has gotten in their Warhammer gaming tables, so we have access to 3d terrain on those boards. Games of Antioch (under the same ownership umbrella) also has Warhammer tables/terrain.

If you guys wanted to plan another big day I should be free until the second week of November. After that my schedule might change

Don't know if this works for your schedule, but I was just looking at two family trips out of town I'm taking in November.  Would Sunday, November 14 work for you?  I'm out of town on the first and third weekends (4th weekend is Thanksgiving).

It would be really fun to get to use the 3d terrain for the Warhammer tables!

I am hoping to make a Saturday a regular thing tho, it generally is best most of the time.

Had a good game at 500 PV. I’ll try and figure out pictures later.

Got to test out the stores 3D table/terrain. Most of it was 40k scale so we ended up not using any buildings which worked out good enough. No good hills were available so we used some boxes. Map was set up with a set of woods and hill on each of our sides, diagonal from each other. There was also a pond/stream that went through a forest directly in the middle of our map.

I played a short clan Binary (Executioner TC, Mad Dog Mk III B, Timber Wolf C, Viper B, Grendel T, Summoner HH, Stormcrow P, Ice Ferret Prime, Adder Prime) vs a Lyran Compmay (2 Commandos, Wolfhound, Hatchetman, Wolverine, Griffin, Archer, Thunderbolt, Banshee, Battlemaster, Atlas III, Zeus). Both forces were nominally dark age era.

Got off to a good start for me, about turn 3 I was able to take out two commandos and the wolfhound, in exchange for a few damage on the Stormcrow. I was also able to savage the Wolverine before he escaped around a hill for a turn. I was able to stay at range for a while and in the woods that allowed my superior skills to do some work. My right flank was unable to do much but distract the assault lance.

I was able to hold onto the pond and used it to put a couple overheat mechs into the water. I was able to flank with the viper and get some back shots. I ended up taking down the damaged Wolverine and the thunderbolt. Once the Lyrans were able to close the range down the dice swung as well.

I missed a couple hefty overheats and my right flank collapsed. The last turn saw my shutdown Grendel get demolished, my Mad Dog whiffing on fives to finish off the Zeus, while the Lyrans were able to hit he Mad Dog on 8s finishing off the short Binary entirely. Had he not been hit then he would have been able to escape in the end.

I was hot early and cooled off, MarauderD was the opposite. My Thor only hit once the entire game, the turn it died. I had really hoped to use its Heat special to slow down the assault lance. I can’t really think of any large tactical errors on either side. Although I probably should not have kept a whole third of my force in the middle pond area where they could be focused by everyone, although they did fairly well from there. A couple key misses forced targeting changes on my part which should have resulted in dead mechs or crit, but resulted In nothing more than scratches.

Ended up with my short Binary being totally wiped out against a nearly dead Zeus, a beat up but thriving Banshee, the Atlas III, the Archer, and the Griffin.

Had a good time despite both our dice betraying us at different times.

Dice, players bane.   :D
Title: Re: NorCal Area: Anyone still Kicking?

It was a fun match.  500 points gave us some more units to play with, which I enjoyed.  The match seemed very ones sided for the first half, as I lost my entire light lance in exchange for about two goal damage on his Stormcrow.  For the next 3 turns, it really seemed like the match would be a total rout.

And then, like a light switch, it was like the dice gods jumped out of his hands and in to mine.  He needed 6s or 7s to finish a Banshee or Zeus and just couldn’t get it.  I needed 8s or 9s and seemingly couldn’t miss.  It was a pretty shocking development.

Overall, Kerfuffin did a good job of using the woods and water in the beginning of the match.  I also think I was overly aggressive and committed to much to taking his Adder and Stormcrow.

Long story short, it was a super fun game with huge swings between turn 2-3 and turns 7-8!

It was right about the time the dice switched I was thinking to myself “good thing we aren’t playing for challenge coins (since you made that topic up in general about them) cause I’d feel bad taking your coin this way.” And then I thought “I better not say that so I don’t sound like a dick and have the dice gods betray me”. Turns out thinking it was enough.  :D

Good point.  Although if you had asked me at turn 4-5 who I thought would win, I would honestly say with 90% certainty it would be you.

I also noticed a weak point in my forces.  I spent 70!!! points on a skill 3 Atlas, with a ton of armor, AECM, and a shield.

You didn't shoot at it.  Pretty funny stuff.  ;D
Title: Re: NorCal Area: Anyone still Kicking?

Yeah the Atlas wasn’t as overly scary as some of the other mechs. (Well I though, looking at the stats it’s just as brutal as any of the other assaults you had). Plus my whole plan for disrupting your assaults via the Summoners Heat effect went out the window when he whiffed twice in a row. I think had a I kept the mad dog on that flank I could have applied more pressure, kinda hard to fight an assault lance with just a Timber Wolf and Summoner.

Deployment/walking on to the board. Lots of sprinting.

My Deployment

Turn Two: I was able to force the wolverine to hide by stripping the armor but relatively ineffective shooting by both sides. I started a 3 turn run of imitative wins here which helped immensely.
https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/895858899914194995/909580229293539389/IMG_5403.jpg

Turn 3/4 (idr): was able to use my initiative win and fast units to get some good positions. Took out two commandos by the pool of water and the Hatchetman. Took a bit more damage here.

https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/895858899914194995/909580540053684255/IMG_5405.jpg

Maybe turn 7ish. This is where it turned. I had finished up the Wolfhound and Wolverine. I lost three mechs this turn. Two of my three skill 2 guys. Through some maneuvering later I took out the Thunderbolt but couldn’t finish off anything else.

https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/895858899914194995/909580873383428176/IMG_5408.jpg

Second to last turn: mad dog retreated backwards. Grendel is shut down in the woods due to missing successive overheat 2s at the banshee.  He would die the next turn as he waited to power back up. Mad Dog fell back and failed to make his parting shot count against the Zeus. Finished up 9 dead ghost bear mechs to 7 Lyran dead.

Hello! I used to play way back in the 90s as a kid and recently discovered that BattleTech has been having a renaissance as of late. I found some of my old stuff and also got one of the new box sets. Been looking for some people to play other than my kids and found this post. I live in Tracy and am often around at the local friendly game store Blackrowan Games. I might also be able to travel to play depending on when and where. I look forward to getting some games in again.

I think Vedgy is out that way as well. We have been meeting in Brentwood the last (only) two times as it’s kinda central as well as has a gaming location.
I know MarauderD mentioned he was full up with family and stuff until after the holidays.

But I would be willing to make a trip out that way on a weekend if it works out.

We have the discord and Facebook groups too. Which is most of the same people as here.
I try to coordinate posting everywhere.

Hello again. Tried joining the Bay Area Battletech Brethren group some time ago but my request just keeps saying pending. I assume people are busy with the holidays, but wanted to check that I had the correct group.

Played a couple games of Alpha Strike with my kids (easier and faster). Do people play more Classic or Alpha Strike? I think I am more interested in classic, but getting in any games sounds good to me. How to people feel about 3D terrain vs just using maps? I have a 3D printer and been working on a base. Thinking of going all 3D with hills and terrain.

That’s the Facebook group. Honestly the Facebook has been pretty quiet. The last couple months is just been me posting about trying to get a game in. I will post to let the Admin know you are waiting tho.

Best bet would be the discord. It has the most activity probably, followed by here and then the Facebook group.
https://discord.gg/pw6h38V6

Where are you located in the Bay?

We have mostly been doing alpha strike. I say mostly, it’s been two meetings in the East Bay and I think a few down in the South Bay. It’s been AS to finish a game in a few hours and be able to use more of the new mechs.

I’ve done a few classics with some buddies and my little brother. That plus megamek. I’d prefer 3D terrain cause looking at the maps, while pretty, it’s a large adjustment from almost any other game, and I guess I’m not very good at that. lol
AS has been easier so far, but I wouldn’t complain about classic

I think we are all kind of on a hiatus right now to let the holidays pass, and will try to go again in January. We are also going to try and meet up at DunDraCon in February I think.

Got the new Beginner Box and Caln Invasion and these minis and contrast paints have me jazzed to start painting and playing again.
