Detachable weapon/missile packs
« on: 06 March 2011, 17:50:39 »
What do they do?  You use the weapon, you drop it... now what?

Do they actually save tonnage  through a means that I do not understand?

Maybe it's just a mental blind spot, but I don't get them.  Help?

Think of them as being like OmniMechs. You can't change weapons during the mission, but between missions you can decide what to fit onto them. Facing infantry? Load up on MGs and/or flamers. Anti-Mech? Lasers or magshot.

In addition, they impose movement limitations - -1MP in the case of detachable weapon mounts, or the 'can't jump' aspect of detachable missile packs. So if you REALLY REALLY needed to run away, you can abandon your weapons to get that extra 10kph. Not something I reckon you'd see on the gameboard, but perhaps more likely in the RPG.

DWP = Allow some of the largest weapons possible to be carried by a battlearmor suit let alone its other uses and mobility limits.  Essentially an external handheld mount for biped suits and an external mount for quads.

DMP = Allow rearming speed improvements as well as an option for Inner Sphere Suits with body mounted missile launchers and jumpjets to be able to use their jumpjets.  Essentially a quick change mount for a missile launcher.

Tac Ops has some of their uses as well its errata for it.  They also have RPG uses.  Its mainly a design element with a few game board options.

Thanks again.  Are there any good designs that demonstrate the DWP usage, as example?

Pretty sure DMP comes up in IS, so not concerned there.

Examples:
DWP = Tengu (Demon) {Dramatic example by the artwork, medium laser version.}
DMP = Clan Elemental, Inner Sphere Longinus {Clan one is for speed of rearming and certain special conditon enviornments or needs.  Inner Sphere one is the classic example of needing to drop the missile pack to be able to jump.}
