I **expect** delays...with Kickstarter having been going for around 10 years now, I would have thought most gamers are fully acclimatised to delays and factor in the expectation of inevitable delays.

I'd much prefer to keep the updates/previews and "Should be next month" tidbits rolling in than get nothing at all...

What I find a bit perplexing is the fact that they never seem to see these delays coming, you'd think they be aware of these potential problems by now.

I find your assumption that it's the same problems each time to be very interesting, especially with a brand new book format.

I appreciate the openness.

Right, its better than no word at all.  We can at least feel included as well as ne able to plot our gaming budgets.

OMG you have a budget? :o

Look consider it a loading progress bar: some people don't mind because they can relax and read a book while it's loading up. The rest are spam clicking their mouse trying to make it download faster so they can speed run the game. We're sitting at the Doctors Office but the workers are taking their time to inform us we haven't been forgotten it's just expect delays.

I'm done with metaphors for today I swear!

the squeaky wheel gets the grease, and unfortunately the people who quietly enjoy what updates we do get don't make as much noise as someone who goes on a vitriolic rant every time a release date gets pushed. I hope TPTB realise this and continue to keep us updated in the future.

The only shame is now there is zero chance of this making Origins.

It was never going to be a physical product at Origins or GenCon IIRC- PDF & PoD only.  Yup, see Lorcan's post at the top of page 31 where he quotes the original release.  Now, might they have one PoD's on hand to show off?  Sure I guess, but not stacks for sale afaik.

I'm am going to preface this with the following disclaimer: EVERYTHING I SAY BELOW IS PURE SPECULATION AND NOT BASED ON ANY SOLID OR INSIDER KNOWLEDGE

Keep in mind that CGL have done limited print runs in the past for fiction that has been released as PoD in general - notably A Splinter of Hope/The Anvil was available at cons last year.  This doesn't mean there'll definitely be physical copies of House Arano available at cons this year, but CGL has priors on this front.

I am also going to postface this with an almost identical disclaimer: EVERYTHING I SAY ABOVE IS PURE SPECULATION AND NOT BASED ON ANY SOLID OR INSIDER KNOWLEDGE

I can guess as to the reasons why, but its not a product I was expecting in the first place so waiting a few more days *refreshes DriveThruRPG search* is not a big deal.  I appreciated the ToC, really appreciated it.  Now if we could get a peak at half of the Sleipner APC RS . . . a taste to hold us over . . .

Is the mess with the Shadowrun Sprawl Ops Kickstarter impacting on BattleTech releases or are the resources for SR & BT totally separate? The Kickstarter updates are starting to make it sound like CGL is having to divert a lot of effort into sorting things out.

Unrelated to the House Arano book.

The decision not to release the PDF before/separate from the POD book is a marketing choice, to try to ensure a strong launch for this new product type. Potentially cutting into the sales of the first-ever POD book for the sake of getting a PDF to you a couple of days sooner, is not the way to get more POD.

Definitively interested in ordering a POD version, might ignore that completely if PDF were available first.
Concerned about total cost though, mostly due to shipping costs, which seem to be 9 euros. Not necessarily bad in itself, unless it is significant fraction of a book... Don't have anything else i'm interested in ordering in print right now. But no matter, i'll get the book either way.

Been replaying the game and finding i like it more this time around (patches and DLCs have improved it), kind of impatient for the sourcebook...

Also going back some weeks or months, i skipped over RS Succession Wars. What new variants did it have? Might pick it up while getting House Arano.

I know I will be getting the PDF of the House Arano book. I dont think I will make it to any of the big conventions this year...so DTF is hard to get. The other thing that is hard is the fact that only one FLGS in a hour drive carries Battletech books....or any product of Battletech.

. . . which is why they are exploring Print on Demand?  It gets a PDF product printed and shipped to you instead of mass printings of a book where they hope for velocity of sales?

Sarris made a good comparison spreadsheet here: https://bg.battletech.com/forums/index.php?topic=64807.0

Looks like all variants with a debut date of "uknown" are new, except the Clint. So... 6 of them. Maybe.

I really hope the on-demand stuff takes off.  As much as I like being able to carry around a library of Battletech books on my tablet so I can look up rules on the fly, I definitely prefer reading a physical book when it comes to source material.

Thank you for the quick response!

I like the idea of PoD, especially if there are PoD/PDF combos. It tempts me to start buying physical books again.

I've done some checking for myself, I did a test cart with one Eclipse Phase PoD sourcebook and then another with three in there.  Standard shipping for one (5-10 day delivery time) to Ireland was €5.75, and for three was €6.79.  Premium shipping (no delivery time listed) was €12.60 for either volume.

I understand why hard copies are popular, but as someone who moves every 1-3 years and pays $3/lb if I go over my weight allowance, I've gone fully digital.  Plus, I love the keyword search capability for PDFs.
"We have made of New Avalon a towering funeral pyre and wiped the Davion scourge from the universe.  Tikonov, Chesterton and Andurien are ours once more, and the cheers of the Capellan people nearly drown out the gnashing of our foes' teeth as they throw down their weapons in despair.  Now I am made First Lord of the Star League, and all shall bow down to me and pay homa...oooooo! Shiny thing!" - Maximillian Liao, "My Triumph", audio dictation, 3030.  Unpublished.

Yikes I’d sell my dead tree collection too.

I don’t have a ton of interest in this particular book but I’m going to get the pod to do my part in encouraging further offerings

While I'm fine with electronic offerings, I'm going to get the PoD version as well because I'd like to see this experiment succeed.  I'd like to see what they offer in the future.  (I'd really like to see PoD for out-of-print CGL books but no one's promised that.  It's pretty unlikely but, hey, I can dream.)

When people are not upset becuase product is delayed that is a bad thing. Things happen no matter what I will order the book and be happy when I get it.

I bought Forever Faithful on release as  POD.  It's still on my shelf and will be coming with me on my camping trip in a week.  Can't wait!

I suspect i'll have a pdf Arano at some point too, but i'll get the POD and pay much more attention to that for sure when available.

Finally got my copy of Forever Faithful. No issues; just been trying to be more fiscally responsible and have not bought books in 6 months.
Epitaph on an Army of Mercenaries

These, in the day when heaven was falling,      Their shoulders held the sky suspended;
The hour when earth's foundations fled,         They stood, and earth's foundations stay;
Followed their mercenary calling,               What God abandoned, these defended,
And took their wages, and are dead.             And saved the sum of things for pay.
