Overview:
When the Lyran Commonwealth asked its defense contractors to develop an
alternative to the Star League's LAM that was less prone to mechanical
failures, and easier to maintain on the field. Lockheed at first wanted no part
of it. Devoting time to retooling one of their lines to create a LAM, and
actually do better than the League's engineers seemed like a waste.
However, the CMW representatives saw it as an opportunity. They asked Lockeed
with them on a fixed wing attachment to light and medium mechs. They also
brought detailed data with them on Alliance's development of the PHX-HK1. After
several private meetings Lockheed promised to help CMW with a few prototypes,
and Lockheeds engineers quietly slipped improvements to several airframe and
large laser components
.
The results of the improved lockheed components went under the radar, but the
STG-H1 and PHX-H3 prototypes drew quite a bit of attention.

Capabilities:
The STG-H1's lack of conversion to aerospace fighter, and ability to fold its
wings into extra rear-torso protection were more than made up for in the
ability to bring the A5 and the 3R's weaponry to a single unit.

The Airfoil had an additional benefit of increased head disipation. This
allowed test pilots to bring all three of the Harmon lasers and the
Sperry/Browning machine guns to a maximum rate of fire. The better pilots could
even keep the weapons firing and maximum jump assited glides going for just
over twenty seconds before the Dynatec 990 would throttle down and the HUD's
would loose sync with reality.

Deployment:
Unlike the single airfoil shipped to Coventry for the PHX-H3, Lockheed sent
five of the smaller airfoils for the STG-H1. Two had defects that weren't
discovered until merged with the chassis for testing, and these were actually
sent back to Lockheed as whole units. Lockheed's engineers repaired the problem
and made adjustments to the three others before shipping.

When the project was "set aside for more important contracts" CMW sent
engineers and final components to Lockheed to finish the two STGs. While this
attempt to keep interest in the partnership failed. Asset reports sudden
addition of two STG-3Rs with curious BINs suggest Lockheed's security forces had
two working units as late as 3010.

Self:  Meltrans are already culture shocked, except their response is to squeal like high school girls at a boy band concert and discharge energy weapons in random directions.
Weirdo: Sounds like the proper reaction to a Macross Cannon to me.

And of course if even a single Constitution had shown up onscreen for even a single second, you would have been able to hear the mass squeeing from orbit.
